Helping Husbands & Fathers Break Free From Pornography In 90 Days | DM “Freedom” to Get Started

sometimes Im like, "I've really got my life figured out."

and then sometimes I have to hold both hands up and see which one makes an "L" to tell my rights and lefts 

so go easy on yourself for not being perfect 

you're in good company

One conversation with my 5-year-old changed my life

And reminded me why Repair is SO important in parenting

He had a rough night.

Not listening
Throwing fits
Being unkind to siblings

I was handling it in a... less-than-stellar way
(we'll just leave it at that)

He finally said sadly, "You hate me..."

I was pretty fired up already so I just kinda moved on

Finally, after we put the kids to bed

I went back to him and snuggled up to him in bed

I told him I loved him and he said...

"Sometimes I just feel like I'm bad...
I always make mistakes."

I tried to apologize for getting frustrated and he said...

"You are perfect. I'm the one who makes bad choices"


I paused.

I told him that I sometimes feel like I'm bad inside too

And that it's normal to feel that way

And in those moments, I try to remember 

That I can choose to be kind to myself

I then told him that him having a hard time listening is NORMAL at his age

And that I am working on not getting so frustrated when it happens

You should have seen how RELIEVED he was to find out he was normal


You see, HERE IS WHY REPAIR IS SO IMPORTANT 
(Sorry for the ALL CAPS)

Young kids will try to make sense as to WHY they are getting yelled at

And to them, our relationship with them is EVERYTHING 

And so when we yell or punish them

Their brain does not see US as the problem

Their brain sees THEMSELVES as the problem

"My mom and dad are perfect, it HAS to be ME."

THEM being the villain is actually less scary for them...

Than if WE were the villain

So when I told my son he was normal and that I was working on myself

It brought incredible relief to him


We pinky promised each other that we would both keep working on ourselves

He then did something I hope I never forget...

He made me pinky promise that I would hold him no matter how old he got

And man am I wanting to make good on that promise

Repair is important because its a way for kids to understand

That nothing is wrong with THEM

They don't need to internalize shame
They don't need to doubt their goodness

They ARE good
They ARE enough

I am so grateful that secure relationships are not built on perfection

They are built on Repair

Alright, I'm just gonna throw this out there 

The Jonas Brothers Christmas Movie is actually pretty darn good 

🎄🎅🎸

Parents don’t realize this, but the way they talk to their kid about porn often creates the very secrecy they’re terrified of.

And I watched this play out in real time with a mom who desperately wanted to “fix” her son.

Back when I was doing lots of family therapy, a parent came in asking for help with her son’s pornography use.

“He’s addicted to his phone and I don’t know how to help him.”

I met with them a handful of times and watched how they interacted.

The son would start to open up
and then she’d jump in.

“You are ruining your life.”
“You could get arrested someday.”
“Why won’t you listen to me?”

Her anxiety shut him down inch by inch.

Eventually he didn’t want to talk to her at all.

One session, I paused her and said:

“Look, the issue here isn’t ‘how do we get your son to stop?’
The real issue is this: how do we help you navigate this so that in ten years, your son still wants a relationship with you?”

She laughed nervously.

A couple weeks later she called saying they’d found a new therapist.

And look, I have a ton of compassion for this mom.
This isn’t about shaming her.
It’s about highlighting a principle most parents never consider.

Ninety percent of helping our kids with pornography and tech use comes down to how we manage our own anxiety around it.

Our kids download our anxiety.
They internalize it as:
“Man, I’m really scaring Mom and Dad. I can’t bring this to them.”

So they hide it.
They believe something is wrong with them.
Shame takes over their internal world.

The antidote is connection.
Real, grounded, safe connection.

If you've ever wondered about what it means to forgive, here are some thoughts from a recent conversation I had with Dr. David T. Morgan, PhD from Silicon Slopes 

With the holiday season being a time of many family gatherings, it can be a confusing time for a lot of people. 

Hopefully these thoughts give a little bit of peace as you navigate difficult relationships

Reason 1 - Because there are literally hundreds of thousands of men all around us struggling thinking they are ALONE. Men need to know they aren't bad, or gross, or weak. And they CAN overcome it 

Reason 2 - Nothing - and I mean NOTHING - can compare to the peace that comes from experiencing deep connection in your marriage. The dopamine rush of a screen can trick us into thinking the screen is as good as it could ever get. NOT. TRUE. AT. ALL. 

Reason 3 -  There is TERRIBLE advice out there. Most men are getting "tips" from reddit threads which just make things worse. Men deserve to get the right strategies, cause the right strategies can create rapid change 

Reason 4 - P*rn destroys our healthy masculinity that our family needs. Children need fathers who are present, grounded, powerful. Wives deserve a husband who is fully in and an equal partner. It's not a man's fault that his brain got hijacked at a young age - but it is now his responsibility to do something about it

Honestly, I get that making this my mission opens me up to hateful comments sometimes. But it's worth it.

Because the men who are wanting to show up powerfully for their families? I love and respect them deeply.
