I woke up one morning in May 2020. We were in the middle of Covid. At 9am, I had a meeting of the utmost importance with my sales director. I settled in at the end of my table, opened my Lenovo, and put on my Jabra headset. My heart beating faster than usual, I began. "I want to leave HSBC." After three years as a relationship manager at the English bank, I wanted to strike out on my own, to try my luck at entrepreneurship. I won't hide it from you: my first project was a failure.

I made every possible mistake. I didn't know enough about my market, about how to build a product. I fell into a bad partnership with a freelance developer. I was really struggling. But there's one thing I did right: I created content. So I was attracting people, but I had nothing to sell.

After about a year, I couldn't see any way forward. My product barely worked and my developer couldn't help me anymore. Then one day, a LinkedIn notification appeared on my iPhone. Someone had messaged me. 

It was the CEO of a fintech who said, "I follow your content, I love what you do. Would you like to do the same thing for us?" Honestly, I didn't even know I could get paid for that. It had never crossed my mind. But I said yes. My project wasn't going anywhere, I needed to earn money, and I enjoyed writing.

So at first, I wrote for fintechs. Then for their CEOs. Today, I work with entrepreneurs and executives around the world—many of them recognized by major publications like the Financial Times and TechCrunch.

Storytelling is not about self-glorification. It’s about the world you want to fix. It starts with a clear point of view on what’s broken in your market and what should no longer exist. Users don’t need founders as heroes. They need founders who take responsibility for a belief. You can multiply the channels all you want. Without a clear stance on who you serve and what you reject, no story resonates.

Great essay from Judith Dada.

Most pitch intros from fintech founders are flat. 
They sound like this:

“We’re building a stablecoin solution that ensures instant cross-border payments for businesses in emerging markets.”

Instead, try this:

”You know, when a small business owner in Lagos needs to pay a supplier in Vietnam, the bank takes days and eats up extra money in fees. We’re building a payment platform that delivers that money in seconds for 10x lower cost.”

It makes it much easier for your interlocutor to engage and ask the right questions.

Introduce the problem with a tiny story. 
Then, say what you’re building with simple words.

Start with why, not how.
