Berlin used to be the startup capital of Europe.
What happened?

I applied for a €50.000 government innovation grant in January 2024.
The Investitionsbank Berlin (IBB) GründungsBONUS. 
Berlin's flagship program to fund innovative startups.

I just received my answer: Rejected!
In March 2026.
Over two years later!

My business plan described building AI-powered operating systems for marketing teams.

Early 2024. Before any of this was mainstream.
I had already done workshops on this topic for RTL, Peek&Cloppenburg and ImmoScout24.
Real clients showed real interest.

The IBB's verdict: not innovative enough because I would be using existing tools.
The plan was to build these workflow systems with Make, Zapier, AirTable and Buffer.
(Keep in mind, that was over two years ago, so well ahead of the time.)

Here is what I did to earn that rejection:
Wrote a business plan from scratch. 
That was 15 hours of work.
Got asked to rewrite it. 
I did that too.
Uploaded a dozen documents into their outdated portal.
Wrote dozens of emails back and forth with their team.
Kept my hopes up the entire time.
26 months of that. 
For a rejection that could have come in week two.

Meanwhile the rest of the world spent those two years proving why that my approach IS the future.
Claude Cowork. Lovable. n8n. Vibe Coding.

I would assume a committee that rejected my business plan from two years ago this week would be aware of that.

Even the most innovative AI-companies in the Silicon Valley and in China today build on top of existing tech infrastructures.
Because that is how innovation move the fastest.

Here is the part that hurts most.
€50.000 is not even enough to build your own AI tool from scratch.
But it is absolutely enough to build something remarkable on top of existing tools.

They rejected the exact approach the entire industry has since adopted.
Then took 26 months to deliver that verdict.

Germany has brilliant AI companies. 
Munich is booming. 
Hamburg is moving.
But Berlin? 
The city that was supposed to lead?
Not a whole lot of AI-companies are coming from here.

It is being held back by programs that bureaucratize innovation to death.

I filed a formal objection. 
I don't really expect too much. 
But I do believe someone has to say it out loud. 
That's also why I'm writing this post here.

Did you know that Instagram is now rolling out a ‘Shared Access’ feature that allows you to share your account with up to 3 other people, without giving them the password?

That means when people accept the invitation, they can post, like, and comment from the profile. 

You can also manage their controls, such as choosing who has access to your DMs or who can post on your story.

Super cool!

And of course, if they leave your company, you can remove their access super easily, instead of the usual “what’s the password?” situation 3 months later.

This is one of the best indicators of whether someone is truly successful:

If they’re a genuinely nice person.

I recently read something from Scott Galloway where he said that when he meets successful people, they’re usually really nice.

They’re not overconfident, rude, or just… an assh*le.

Why? Because if you’re successful, it’s rarely because you’ve done it all on your own.

There are always people along the way you’ve had to ask for help, whether that’s mentors, colleagues, or friends, and you have to be humble enough to ask for favours and accept guidance.

It’s also worth saying that 'success' doesn’t always equal money. 

There are plenty of people with wealth who aren’t fulfilled, and plenty of fulfilled people who would never call themselves rich.

Everyone needs their own definition of success, whether that’s impact, freedom, relationships, or simply just doing work they care about.

This is something I always try to keep at the forefront of my mind.

I really believe in the law of attraction and try to lead from the heart, with my team and colleagues, through kindness, humility, and friendliness.

Because I think that that energy always finds its way back to you.

(Maybe along the way, when some people get too successful, they forget that part…)

Tell me: are most of the successful people you’ve met nice? Yes or no?

You’re absolutely fooling yourself if you think organic social can just exist on its own.
It never will.

Successful organic social should sit inside a wider ecosystem made up of paid social, influencer marketing, events, and CRM, with each touchpoint strengthening the others.

Organic is where people understand you brand's POV and decide whether they trust you.

Influencer marketing builds on that trust by letting familiar faces carry it further.

Paid is how that recognition reaches more of the right people and showcases your products or services.

Events give those shared relationships a place to show up and create moments together.

CRM is where those relationships are nurtured and turned into conversions.

The brands getting it right today are the ones doing it this way.

(And the ones thinking about it but only have one social media manager to execute it all, we see you.)

"Roast our channel"

The whole Piggyback team roasted one of our clients. 
In the best way imaginable.

We’re 12 people now.
Of course not everyone is super deep in every channel anymore. 

So we tried a format where the whole team reviews one channel with fresh eyes.

Our first “victim”: wowtamins

A children’s supplement brand we’ve been live with on social for about 2 months now.

Kathi, Ayce and Victor are the core team on the project. 
Everyone else prepared in advance.
We then blocked one hour to go through the whole channel... really properly:

Instagram, TikTok, bio, handle, highlights, captions, community management, content, faces, hooks, CTAs.
Everything.

At the start, we set one rule: 
Just take the feedback, don’t get defensive.

The session was ridiculously valuable.

We even ended with school grades for the channels and content, just to be honest about where we stand. 
We landed somewhere between a B- and a C.

So yes, still a lot of room to improve. 
And now we know exactly what to fix.

Piggyback – Project Partner Feeds

There’s a word I’ll never use to describe the brands we work with.
And it’s a pretty common one.

'Clients.'

Since I started working with brands, I’ve made a conscious effort to call them project partners instead.

Why?

Maybe it’s just me, but 'client' has always felt a bit hierarchical.

I feel like it creates an unnecessary sense of us and them, and that’s never how I want our relationships to feel, on either side.

By calling them 'project partners' instead of clients at Piggyback, we set the tone from day one for an equal collaboration, where both sides are trusted, respected, and listened to.

Even though it might seem like a small thing, I genuinely believe that these small things have a real impact on the bigger picture.

Do you think the same about the word clients? Or have you never even given it a second thought?

Everyone thinks content marketing is changing. 

And sure, maybe we've got new tools, new channels, new ways of doing things. 

But I'd like to question if this is really true. 

Wasn't the role of a content marketer to figure out what the customer needed to hear at the right time? 

Regardless of the channel or way of doing it? 

Since launching my agency in 2023, I've seen about a million new tools that were supposed to destroy it.

Instead of throwing in the towel, I kept going. 

Kept talking to my customers and my prospects. 
Basically drank B2B marketing content for a living to stay close to my ICP.
And always kept an eye on how our content was impacting our clients' wallets (before it was officially part of the job description). 

And we're still here. 

Yeah, I'm using new tools. You might even call me a content engineer (lol).
But my principles haven't really changed.

How do you prove the ROI on content marketing when your sales cycles take 6-9 months? 

This is a question on a lot of B2B marketers' minds. 

Thing is, when you're a long sales cycle, ROI doesn't show up immediately or all at once. Nor is it supposed to. 

It builds in layers. Here's a reframe you can use w/ leadership:

Layer 1 — Leading indicators: 
This is your earliest signal that the right people are paying attention. 
Think contact form submissions from target accounts, RFP requests, discovery call bookings, engagement with high-intent pages like pricing and case studies. 

Layer 2 — Lead quality and velocity: 
Are the right leads converting, and how quickly? Traffic to SQL rate, SQL to opportunity conversion, time from first touch to SQL. This is where you start connecting content to pipeline behaviour.

Layer 3 — Pipeline metrics: 
Now we're in revenue territory. Opportunity to closed-won rate, average deal size by source, win rate by lead source, sales cycle length.

Most teams jump straight to layer 3 and wonder why content can't prove itself yet.

Track all three layers. That's how you show content is working before the revenue confirms it.

Last week I talked to 50+ marketers about thought leadership when someone asked: 

How do you get executive buy-in when the C-suite needs to see revenue?

This is my answer:

The mistake most marketing leaders make is trying to prove thought leadership is a revenue play.

You'll lose that argument every time.

The reframe that works: stop positioning it as a revenue play and start positioning it as infrastructure.

"Thought leadership isn't a revenue play. It's infrastructure that makes our revenue plays work better."

Now you're not competing with sales and demand gen for budget. You're making those investments more efficient. AKA shorter deal cycles, warmer inbound, better ABM & paid conversion.

CEOs might cut campaigns. But they will fund systems and architecture. 

So know to differentiate between the two before you walk into that meeting.

And sometimes, you might just not win the argument. A thought leadership program without executive buy-in is going to be extremely difficult to do well. 

So it's not right for every organization.

So you wanna build a 7-figure pipeline in 90 days with content?


Ha, joking. As much as I wish it were true, that's gonna be tough in B2B.  

A few weeks of AI-generated blog posts and social content probably won't be what suddenly scales (or saves) your business.

So - you're probably asking: What will? 

Well, unfortunately, it's a series steps that seem very small and very 'unsexy' steps - but actually add up to be kind of a lot - and kind of overwhelming for one person or even a small team- over time):

- Saying no to production until positioning & messaging are set in stone
- Analyzing sales calls to map what prospects need to hear at each stage
- Interviewing internal experts to capture unique insights that can't be replicated by AI
- Building a system that keeps you present where your customers are (and compounds over time)
- Seeing content as infrastructure that makes everything else work better (ABM, paid, outbound, etc.)

Shorter sales cycles, warm inbound, and pipeline... these are a result of all of these steps working in tandem together. 

It's far from a magic bullet. And takes a bit of groundwork. But it's every bit worth it.

If you're a startup founder or marketer struggling to define your category, look at how "vibe coding" got its name.

It didn't happen because someone said "we're gonna own this space."

It emerged because people started using tools like Lovable and Cursor... And the behavior was so distinct, the name wrote itself.

That's how category creation actually works. The product comes first. The language follows.

So instead of asking "how do we define our category?" and coming up with a fancy term nobody uses or has any reference for... 

Ask yourself "what are people experiencing when they use this?" 

Build and create messaging around that. 
Then watch how your users describe it.

The right words will find you. Not the other way around.

After months of seeing no demo bookings, our client, Agentset, started seeing 2-3 demo signups/week after our project together.

Abdellatif Abdelfattah, their CEO, came to us late December of last year, because they were having trouble finding the right messaging strategy for their homepage.

One particular challenge was resonating with their core ICP (RAG app developers) while also connecting with business buyers in the Enterprise.

This is a common challenge for developer-focused products. 

The core audience speaks a technical language. But the ones making final sign-offs don't. 

One of our focuses was on making the hero section more accessible to an average visitor - by really getting clear on what the product is and does. (Turns out that works for technical audiences too 😉 )

But I'd say our biggest lever was introducing the idea of adding a Problem section for Agentset. 

Rather than diving straight into the features, capabilities, and benefits of the product, this section would help them evaluate the product against a greater market context, and the implication of not changing or doing things the same way. 

AKA your AI apps failing when they hit production. 

And everyone in the company knows the downstream effects of an app not working properly.

This small change ended up getting an incredibly positive reception from their ICP, when Abdellatif tested it with his ICP. 

And that's what also worked about this project - rather than immediately going live, we iterated on it based on what the response was. 

And now, the results are getting Agenset right where they need to be going.

B2B marketing teams in complex industries have an interesting challenge: They're around internal subject matter experts everyday. But extracting their. insights is often a hurdle. 

Here's what Caitlin McCarthy and I have learned from working with clients and internal experts in more technical industries:

1. Know that your SMEs aren't marketers

And they shouldn't do the job of one. I remember an old prospect once told me they didn't need content marketers because "they already had researchers and scientists on their team." While these figures are great to reference for authority, content strategy & subject matter expertise are two different things.

2. Tell them their knowledge is more valuable than they think

Your SMEs are so close to their work, that they probably take their own knowledge for granted (as most of us do). So what they deem as table stakes, is actually very valuable to your audience. Before any interview, tell them that explicitly as it it changes how openly they share.

3. Give a rundown of your conversation:

No one does their best thinking when they don't know where a conversation is going. Send a brief outline in advance. It reduces friction, improves the quality of answers, and shows respect for their time.

4. Know when to let them talk vs. taking the reins

Your SMEs are probably very into what they're doing - so it's likely that they'll go off on tangents. It's your job as a marketer to steer them in the right direction, while also letting them talk enough to get the gold.

Last week a marketing leader at a B2B SaaS company asked me how to align sales & marketing so they could generate leads on LinkedIn. 

My opinion is that it's not either/or when it comes to sales and marketing. 

The best results come when marketing builds the credibility and sales activates it. But most companies underinvest in one and wonder why the other isn't working.

Here's how I think about it:

Marketing builds the foundation. 

Content, videos, profile optimization. When you show up consistently, leads are warm. Either you message engaged accounts or they reach out -- either way they already know who you are. Slower burn, but the conversations are higher quality.

Sales activates it. 

A lead gen specialist or an SDR team. List building, outbound campaigns, sales sequencing. They can move fast and target precisely. But without the marketing foundation, cold outreach stays cold.

And on LinkedIn, you can't fully separate the two even if you wanted to.

LinkedIn's SSI score (built on profile completeness, content activity, and engagement quality) directly determines how many connection requests your team can send daily. No content strategy means a capped outreach strategy. Every time.

Sales needs marketing to unlock its own ceiling.

So if you're a SaaS company trying to generate leads on LinkedIn — the question isn't sales or marketing. It's how quickly can you get both working together.

5 steps to make sure your case studies get published (and don't die somewhere in a dark archive):

Case studies have an Instagram vs. reality problem. 

In theory, they should be easy to execute. But in reality, they're full of delays, cancellations, and stats that never see the light of day. 

Here are 5 unconventional ways we're helping our clients avoid roadblocks and delays:

1. Start with a framework first
Something like: Quick Snapshot → Before → What We Did → Outcomes → Next Steps. This will give you continuity across stories, keep interviews focused, and it means you always know exactly what information you’re trying to get out of each conversation.

2. Interview internally first before going to the customer.

Most case studies start with customer interviews. But the customer often only sees their slice. Your account managers and delivery leads know the full story — the trigger, the challenge, what was built, what changed. Start here first.

2. Draft the story before going to the client.

People are far quicker to react to something that already exists. Write a draft, then run though it with them for key detaile, feedback, and approval.

3. Send interview questions in advance.
Especially for proof points — people need time to dig up metrics, find feedback emails, or remember what made the partnership work. Putting them on the spot will rarely work. 

4. Suggest testimonials, don't just ask for them.

Not every story has a clean "saved 40% cost" stat. Qualitative outcomes, time saved, or a well-worded testimonial can carry just as much weight.
