It took me 8 years to be an overnight success.
That’s almost 3,000 days of trying, learning, and betting on myself.

Right now, things look like this:
— I’m working with clients I deeply respect and align with
— I’m saying yes to speaking gigs (even when they scare me)
— I’m collaborating with clients instead of performing for them
— I’ve hit revenue goals and built a runway
— I’ve stopped trying to reinvent everything when I have a new idea 

And let me tell you, this is huuuge because it wasn’t always like this.

I started out saying yes to    e-v-e-r-y-t-h-i-n-g.

("Everything" examples: I designed a magazine ad and planned a golf tournament) 

- Took orders like a short-order cook. 
- Binged webinars, hoping this one would unlock everything.
- Tried to become an expert in every client’s field.
- One summer, I made $200 -- my runway fell apart 

None of that shows up in a highlight reel.
But it’s part of the story, too.

We don’t talk enough about the middle.

The years where things are working… but barely.
Where you’re not failing, exaaaactly. But you’re also not sure how long you can keep going.

And still: you keep going.

Because done (even imperfect) is better than never started.
And day 1 will never look like day 2,947.

Things not on my 2026 Bingo card: 
Using my grandmother’s sewing machine and ChatGPT on the same project 

I've always been fascinated by quilting, but this really took a life of its own over Christmas break. 

I took 2 sewing classes and dusted off Granmom's 90s sewing machine and got it serviced at SewingMachine.com (physical location 20 mins from my house) 

I checked out dozens of quilting books from the library and read them on my lunch breaks. (Georgia Quilts: Piecing Together a History is my favorite) 

This weekend, I went to the fabric store and bought fabric. 

And then it was time to cut. 

****WHAT HAVE I DONE ****

Enter: ChatGPT. 

I literally asked it these things: 
- I've never done this before. Can you explain this to me?
- Can you make me a diagram?
- My mat is 23 inches long. How do I cut the 3 1/2 x 42 strip? 
- I need to load my bobbin on my Janome new home 1990s machine, can you walk me through that? 
- When the instructions said to join the pieces, what should they look like in the sewing machine? 
- What does press seams open mean? 

And it goes on. 

I used some YouTube, but ChatGPT was more helpful. 

I asked it dumb questions and kept going. 

So yeah, I know this is niche to be talking about a new granny hobby on LinkedIn, but I just want to encourage you -- 

If there's something you want to do in life or business, there are tons of resources. Use what you have. And just try. 

I can't wait to hear how you surprise yourself this week. 💛

tip of the day: Ask a few of your clients what THEY think your unique value proposition is. 

It'll give you wings better than Red Bull.

Last week, Dana Casto said he thought that "not precious with your words" was a unique value proposition of mine. 
And I think I know where that feature came from: 

While the English majors were waxing poetic, the Comms department was trying to condense the headline into 3 inches of column space for the college newspaper. 

[This is meant to compare & contrast, not to start a war on English majors. I love you guys and started out there.]

At the newspaper, nothing was sacred. 
Every word was on the chopping block. 
The puzzle was to say as much as possible in as few words as possible. 

And always to write for the skimmers. 

Because even when you're unfolding a newspaper over a cafeteria tray, you're distracted: 

Your friends are chatting, the baseball team just walked in, and that girl from public speaking class is sitting right behind you. 

Not much has changed. 

The medium of 2026 is back-lit, but the mission is the same: 
Get to the point. 
Make it easy to take in -- especially knowing that attention is fleeting.

That means, spacing, strong ledes (aka hooks), illustrations, a light wink of industry jargon and the willingness to delete what doesn't land -- all of that goes into it. 

Everything I write is a collaboration with my client and what they want to share AND with the reader and what's going to land. 

If it's not working, we cut. Until it works.
