Responsible for the analysis, design, delivery, and evaluation of both ‘Learning and Development’ and ‘Talent Acquisition’ activities.

Provided learning interventions for customer service agents, team managers, support team workers, and key stakeholders across the UK. 

Training activities were usually classroom based in Belfast, but also delivered using Webex or on client premises across the UK.  

Created a training catalogue accredited by the CCA (Customer Contact Association) which achieved a score of 100%.

Designed and implemented a career development pathway 'highly commended' at the CCA’s Global Excellence Awards in the category of ‘Most Effective Training Programme’. 

Responsible for the external acquisition of talent and designed a recruitment process to meet resourcing requirements. This included the management of large scale assessment centres.

Prior to promotion in July 2010 I worked in Customer Service handling audience contacts by phone, letter, and e-mail while also acting as Deputy Team Manager.

Before I began my 'career', I worked in a lot of different industries and gained experience that has served me well in understanding the employees and businesses I work with today.

I've worked in retail, been a lorry driver, a courier, worked in restaurants in a variety of roles, hotels, bars, nightclubs, been a cleaner, worked in a full service marketing agency with experiences in the PR, Client Services and Media Buying departments, worked in airport security and baggage handling (to name a few...). Quite the variety which saw me through my early years before finding a passion for the world of People & Culture!

Finishing the week on a real high after inspired conversations with two true leaders in Barry Taylor & Mary McManus.

Let me say this… the term leader is thrown around too lightly.

It’s used to denote people because of job title, status or official authority.

But anyone can have a badge.

Leadership is about movement, and that requires bravery and conviction.

It’s about seeing something better and trying to bring people on a journey to that promised land.

Barry and the MEGA- Manufacturing & Engineering Growth & Advancement team are driving progress in the manufacturing and engineering sector.

Helping employers build better businesses, and helping jobseekers find meaningful careers.

Mary is championing the Real Living Wage (through Living Wage NI) which as she put it is a Win:Win:Win.

It’s better for the worker, the company and society when people are able to focus on doing their best work rather than living in crisis.

These two have inspired me today.

They stand for something.

They’re leaders.

Changing the world.

Making a better working world.

One thing I am eternally grateful for since going self-employed is the quality of people I’ve come to know.

It’s put me in times and spaces whereby I’ve been fortunate to come into contact with change makers making the world a better place.

Most people see the world for what it is and just get on with it.

And that’s fine.

There are circumstances and reasons why a lot of people do that.

It’s no individual’s responsibility to go and fix a broken world.

But I do admire those who see a way they can contribute to making the world better, and choose to own a part in doing it.

Philip Brady is one of those people.

Philip helps people to live better lives.

Every time I speak with Philip I find myself thinking more deeply about my own choices and path and becoming more conscious about what I’m doing.

Anyone who works with Philip I have no doubt finds themselves in a better position because of it.

He’s spoken at the Vibrant Workplace Forum previously, and I am delighted that he is coming back for our ‘Work Well, Live Well’ event in January.

You’ve heard me say it many times, but I will keep saying it until it no longer needs said:

A full time worker goes to work for 100,000 hours during their lifetime - not including commuting or overtime.

They make huge sacrifices - working more than anything else they will do in their conscious waking hours during the best years of their lives.

In return, too many are living in survival👈

That’s not good enough👈

People who make those commitments deserve for their work to enable them to live a better life.

And when they do - when they’re happy, healthy and not living in crisis:

▪️Their best selves come to work
▪️And do so more often
▪️They do a better job
▪️Delight customers
▪️And stay in the company for longer

Businesses are:

☑️ More efficient.
☑️ More effective.
☑️ More profitable.

Because of it.

It’s not people OR profit.

It’s people first, and that delivers profit.

We can have a better working world.

👉For employers.
👉AND for employees.

This comment from Olga Pollock, Chartered MCIPD really resonated with me because HR gets a lot of flack for things that are often ultimately out of their control.

In many companies HR is still installed as a thing we put in place to not get in trouble.

But HR can be so much more than that.

If it’s strategic, led by the right people and properly supported.

There are some brilliant HR leaders out there and I can see them being held back.

I feel frustrated for them - especially when you see the problems in the businesses they work in that they know don’t need to exist - but they’ve grown disillusioned trying to get support to do something about.

I find myself thinking, if I’m this frustrated on their behalf… how exasperated must they feel…

In fact, at a conference last year an HR leader spoke to me and said, “The problem with all this is we’re not the people who need to be convinced.”

And I think that’s a pretty common frustration within the HR community.

People strategy can be the reason business thrives.

If it’s allowed to be.
