I have over 25 years of insight, marketing, and innovation leadership experience in FMCG and FS sectors, I know, I don't look THAT old.

I've enjoyed working for some of the world's leading brands in various categories (health & beauty, food & beverages & financial services) and regions, delivering impactful consumer and market intelligence, brand strategy, and product innovation. My time spent working on Oil Of Olay made me my mum's favourite son.

And there is a difference.

We already live in a world where knowledge is effectively unlimited if you think about it.

Every book ever written, every lecture, every research paper is potentially a few keystrokes away.

But has it improved our curiosity, our discipline or our creativity?
 
The bottleneck is not access to intelligence. The bottleneck is what you do with it.

I'm loving this book The Next Renaissance by Zack Kass. 

Finally a book that acknowledges the risks but ultimately lands on an optimistic conclusion, that AI is expanding human capability in ways we are only beginning to understand.

It's packed full of wisdom & a must read.

When I get stuck, I read.
So I read a lot.
Good books in my mind do one thing really well, they help adjust my thinking.

Three on my list

1. Design Thinking and Innovation is about testing early, learning as quick & cheaply as possible and the benefits of staying curious.

2. The Rules That Make Us is about about recognising early changes in behaviour and meaning, before they become obvious to everyone else. And benefitting from this insight.

3. Runnin’ Down a Dream about how compounding works both ways. So we all (including organisations) need to be more deliberate about where we place our time, energy and attention.

1. the winners are compounding faster, the gap between the best and the good is widening.

2. compute is the real economy (like electricity or even the internet was)

3. the interface to commerce is changing FAST, agents, protocols, new rails and permissions & new gatekeepers

and just as most things underneath you are changing there is a suggestion that speed is becoming a survival trait

It sometimes appears that we've created an ecosystem of people who haven’t built anything…teaching people how to build something…using frameworks from people who also haven’t built anything.

This line should be printed at the top of LinkedIn.

Because the truth is, building something is extremely squiggly ....
 
Most days “CEO energy" is replying to emails no one asked for or fixing a problem you caused yesterday and celebrating a £47 sale like you’ve just exited for £47 million 😛 

So here’s a thought before you follow the guru or buy the course…

Ask yourself .... What have they actually built?” .... like really built.

Not what they say. Not what they post. What they’ve actually done.

Because it seems that being an “entrepreneur” is easy these days.

But actually building something ..... that's still annoyingly hard.

And if you're in the messy bit, by the way… hats off to you. Keep going 👏

Thirty minutes well spent this weekend listening to Mark Given's first ever podcast with Russell Parsons on Marketing Week.

Mark's career arc is fascinating. Civil engineering at Glasgow, P&G in 1998, Scottish & Newcastle/Heineken, O2, and now several years shaping the growth at Sainsbury's. But the key takeout for me isn't Mark's CV, it's his mindset behind it.

Three things to note:

🧠 His genuine hunger to keep developing, not just himself, but also his teams. ("careers are long").
 🧠 His humility to know he doesn't have all the answers ... yet. But works hard to invest in proper understanding.
🧠 And his obsession with the customer. Always asking "so what does this mean for them?"

China’s latest 5 year plan has been discussed in the news this week.

While a lot of discussions in the West regarding China focuses on 'chips' there is seemingly few mentions of this in their plan.

There is, however, a lot of focus on artificial intelligence; compute power, digital infrastructure & applications.

There is a new phrase that appears in the plan for the first time & it means model : chip : cloud : application. We're told to think of it as a technology stack.

So chips are only one layer of four & above them sit the AI models, the cloud infrastructure, and the applications that can actually transform industries.

China’s strategy appears to be building the whole stack. It's not just about invention but deployment, embedding AI into factories, logistics, robotics & supply chains.

They are looking to apply intelligence across the entire economy & aligning universities, capital, infrastructure and industrial policy around strategic technologies.

Their new measure of success appears to be the digital economy reaching 12.5% of GDP by 2030.

Maybe the 'strategic' part of the story now is not who is building the best chips but who is building the most powerful computing ecosystem. (appreciate politics of this)

Where were you in 2016?
What was happening in your world?

It's been fascinating to see the social media 2016-2026 trend.

A decade feels both yesterday and a lifetime ago.

2016 was the year we lost David Bowie (a reminder that brilliance leaves a legacy), the year of the Rio Olympics - and that same year, something else began.

The Marketing Society launched in the UAE. 

It started as a small, ambitious community with big belief.  And from a small start of 50 members, we are now at 650 and growing, flourishing and achieving incredible impact. 

In ten years a lot has happened.

We've launched 'Think Equal,' brought a Scholarship and Ones to Watch programme to support the leaders of tomorrow. We've created a successful Awards Programme judged with integrity by senior marketers, for marketers. And we have convened some of the brightest voices in our industry with one shared ambition: to connect, be inspired, and lead the conversation.

Last week, I was back in Dubai to celebrate. It was a wonderful night with some fantastic people. 

We honoured the Chairs and Boards who have shaped The Society in this region -- with special thanks to the 5 Chairs in that time - Thomas Delabriere, Asad ur Rehman, Khaled M. Ismail, Mohammed Ismaeel Hameedaldin  
Amina Taher. Thanks to all for their continued support and stewardship. And huge gratitude go to all our brilliant board members across Dubai, Abu Dhabi and now the GCC who have built this community with belief and backbone, and working with our fab team on the ground Emely Guzmán Acevedo, Kazi Afnan, Navya Rajiv, working with our supersmart GCC Director Alasdair Hall-Jones .


I loved the 10 Year Anniversary evening as it was everything a The Marketing Society experience is at its best. Exceptional people in the room, connecting, asking great questions - together with great inspiration and helpful, provocative thinking on stage.

We welcomed two new Fellows: the fabulous Amina Taher, CMO of Wio Bank and Chair of UAE, and Vikram Krishna from Sacred Groves. Recognition richly deserved.

And we launched 'The Annual Lecture' in the region for the very first time, with Mark Ritson sharing timely, challenging thinking about the moment we're in right now. Smart. Direct. Necessary. Thanks to Mark and Tim Plyming from MiniMBA for being part of a great week in the region.  

Kudos and gratitude to Shadi Kandil  and the team at TikTok  for supporting the evening -- and to everyone who has been part of this ten-year journey.

We're now pausing GCC events for Ramadan.

Then we accelerate again.

Our theme this year is Ambition.

Here's to what's next and what we can achieve together.

How important is Davos to business leaders and marketers right now?

  

This year, a number of The Marketing Society Members were at Davos.

We are a global community of marketers who mean business. That means people influencing what is happening inside their organisations, across society and on the world stage. Our Members are in the rooms and in the places where things happen.

Of course, it's IMPOSSIBLE for all our members to be everywhere and learn everything right now. That's where the gloriousness of community comes in.

Our Members share what they've learned. What they've seen. What actions or thoughts this provokes.

That shared intelligence amplifies and sharpens our collective understanding of the world and business. Together, we achieve more than we ever could alone.

We have a principle at The Marketing Society for our brilliantly busy members:

💥If you don't go, you still get to know.

If you miss an event, someone smart brings back the signal from the noise.

This year, two of our Members (one from England and one from the UAE) sent their Dispatches from Davos -- capturing not just what was said, but what it means.

John Rudaizky set the provocation:

"Could Davos be where upstream influence really begins?"

And he points out why Davos matters more to CMOs than ever.

"CMOs intuitively understand culture, citizens and customers. We sense early where trust is building and where it is quietly eroding. In a moment defined by technological acceleration and social strain, that perspective matters -- and this year, Davos seemed to recognise it."

In another great think piece Noha Habib shared her perspective on how at Davos 'stamina and emotional intelligence matter as much as strategy'. 

There was also a reminder to us all of the critical principle that 'narratives alone do not land unless relationships carry them forward.'

Shall we take inspiration today from one of the most rigorous thinkers of our time?

Daniel Kahneman was a Nobel Prize–winning psychologist. A serious mind. Deeply respected. Not given to fluff.

So I was quietly delighted to rediscover this quote from him this morning about optimism.

Because optimism is often misunderstood.

People confuse it with naïvety. With wishful thinking. With reckless positivity.

It isn’t.

In my book Superfast, I reference Jim Collins’ idea of ‘constructive paranoia’ from Good to Great. 

The best leaders aren’t blindly optimistic. They prepare. They think ahead. They plan for risk.

And precisely because they prepare, pace and persist — they can afford to be optimistic.

Optimism is not a denial of difficulty.
It’s a belief in possibility.

All around us are extraordinary stories of people succeeding in tough times. Building. Creating. Adapting. Making the most of what they have.

We need to keep sharing those stories to remind us what is possible.

Optimism is a trait of entrepreneurs.
It’s a highly appropriate and effective trait of corporate leaders too.

So don’t be embarrassed about being optimistic.

This is the energy we need.

As Kahneman reminds us, it keeps you healthy. It keeps you resilient.

Putting this out there in case anyone else needs the reminder today.

Get ready for the sunshine ahead. You can make it happen.

And I'd slightly forgotten just how ridiculously challenging it was for Greg Jackson and Octopus Energy  when, early in their stratospherically successful journey, they hit the energy crisis head on. 

This episode made me laugh (Greg's way of handling stress is… memorable). And it made me smile too when he gave Sarah Fuller and me a little shout-out ❤️

A great reminder: crises happen to the very best. It's not what hits you. It's how you handle it.

Word of Week: Cherish

Last year, one of my nephews** got married.

I was so happy. I adore his wife. The day was glorious — full of family, joy, cool music and love.

He is a member of the Romanian Orthodox Church, so it was a wedding service I had never experienced before. It was, let’s say… unhurried. Not superfast. Occasionally a test of patience for someone wired for pace.

And in the midst of incense and chanting, two words cut through.

The first was “asunder.”

What a dramatic word. “Let no man put asunder.”  A name for a heavy metal band? Or a divorce law firm. Either way, a grand old word.

The second was “cherish.”

I’ve always liked those “-ish” words. Flourish. Nourish. They feel warm and human.

But cherish packs a bit of a different punch.

I looked it up. To cherish is:
	•	To protect and care for someone lovingly
	•	To hold something dear
	•	To keep a hope or ambition in your mind

That third definition stopped me. “Ambition” is the theme for The Marketing Society Six Changemakers Conferences this year - in Singapore, Scotland, New York, Hong Kong, Dubai and London.

It’s a great concept to unpack and reflect on personally, professionally and as a profession together.

In business we talk plenty about targets, growth and performance. We measure. We optimise. We accelerate.

But do we cherish what makes that growth real?

Do we “care for lovingly”:
	•	Our brands?
	•	Our strongest performers?
	•	The extraordinary opportunities technology can give us?

If you don’t cherish your reputation, it fades.

If you don’t cherish talent, it stalls or sulks.

If you don’t cherish ambition — and the reasons for hope — it can fray rattily under the relentlessness of the world.

This year I started using a gratitude journal, thanks to Emma Harris who leads the Slow the F*** Down movement. It’s helped me begin each day more intentionally.

But gratitude can feel slighlty passive. Perhaps just the starting point.

Cherishing feels deliciously active. It suggests protection. Attention. Energy.

So this word is making me think about what I want to cherish more deliberately:

My family.
My friendships.
The brilliant people I work with at The Marketing Society — our board, our members, our team.
And the ambition that keeps tapping me on the shoulder.

Those wedding words are staying with me.

Let no man — or woman — put asunder the good things I hold dear.

And may your lives and leadership be full of things you cherish.❤️

**I recently discovered the collective term for nieces and nephews is “niblings.” Now that’s a marvellous word.

⭐️Word of the Week: SHOULD.

(Or perhaps… the anti-word.)

I'm trying hard not to use it.
With my teenage and young adult children, I'm hyper-aware of avoiding:
- 'You should choose this university.'
- 'You should follow that career.'

I learnt so much from researching my book ‘LoveWork’ with Ben Renshaw. Work (and life) are deeply personal.

Your path is an individual one. The choices you make have to be yours. They have to suit the work or the life you want. 

I'm noticing it with myself too.
The beating-up and self-berating.
The frustration at imperfection.

‘You should be further ahead by now.’
‘You should have done more.’
  
But… we can't do everything. Perfection isn't possible.
And, the 'Driver personality' in me isn't a huge fan of being told what I should do by others - so why do I let the negative nagging-Norman inner voice do it? I also know plenty of mid-career professionals still untangling choices they made because they felt they SHOULD.
  
So I'm replacing it with:
⚡️I could do this.
⚡️I choose to do that.

Should feels like it shrinks possibility.
The idea of choice expands it gloriously, gorgeously.
 
Maybe we ‘should’ ban should. 😀
Or at least use we COULD use it far more carefully.

It reframes success around long-term societal wellbeing rather than short-term financial returns.
