The first time I stepped in front of a camera, it took me an entire day, a meltdown, and a facial to create two short videos. 🎥

I spent my career helping others create compelling content. In my previous life, I was a big-budget video producer and director, producing corporate videos, commercials, and Emmy-winning documentaries. 

When it became clear to me that everyone with a smartphone was capable of producing high-quality video content, I pivoted from big-budget production to helping small business owners compete with my former corporate clients for a seat at the table. 

That first time I first stepped in front of the camera in 2017, I learned the hard way that content creation was a lot harder when I didn’t have a full team and a big budget to support me. 

The problem with being a small business owner AND a content creator is making content creation effective without it becoming a full-time job. 🥵

When content creation feels like work, it doesn’t resonate. We can all tell when a piece of content doesn’t speak from a place of authenticity. 

The solution, for me, is to make the process enjoyable and simple.

It’s my privilege to support service-based entrepreneurs and visual artists to help them find a balance between consistent content creation and their passion work that helps them grow their audience and attract ideal clients. 

I focus on LinkedIn because that’s where all the cool business owners hang out, and it’s the best platform for organic growth.

One of the reasons I appreciate LinkedIn has always been that it’s drama-free and business-focused, at least in my corner of its universe.
 
However, the past few months have seen some upheaval stemming from AI-fed gender bias. And frankly, it has me “upheaveled” too.
 
In the fall, a few women changed their gender in their profile to male to find that their content got a massive spike in attention (we’re talking a multiplier of 400X).
 
What isn’t clear is if it works in the other direction just as well or if it has to do with changing your gender on your profile. What we DO know is that there is a massive gender bias perpetrated by male-dominated content that has trained LLMs (large language models) that feed language-based AI. 
 
➡️ That said, I don't believe that changing our genders on LinkedIn is a good solution. The point is to keep our gender, make a point to contribute women-created content AND educate on the fact that AI answers are predominantly male-created content. ⬅️
 
I asked ChatGTP and Perplexity: “What percentage of all LLM content is male-created?”

ChatGTP’s summary of a very long answer is:

“We don’t have a reliable percentage, but given who has historically produced most digitized, web-available text and codes, LLM are most certainly trained on data where male-created content is the majority, and in some key domains, a large majority.”

And Perplexity? I left the room because it wouldn’t stop typing 😳….

When I came back after doing laundry and several other (womanly) tasks around the house, it was STILL TYPING, so I put a stop to it.

The bottom line I got from the first paragraph is that based on academic research over 73% of all AI data originates from non-female sources. […] 

I quote: “This substantial disparity in source material authorship has profound implications for how contemporary AI systems understand, represent, and respond to the world, reflecting and potentially amplifying [Authors note: You think?] existing gender biases embedded within digital information ecosystems.”

So, where do we go from here? 

Changing our gender on LinkedIn is not the answer. To the contrary.

➡️ We need to make sure our voices are being heard – as women, not women disguised as men(!), that we scan our AI generated texts carefully for gender-bias, and keep in mind that “their experience” is not and will not for a very long time be ours. ⬅️

The way LinkedIn rewards engagement on its platform has fundamentally changed in the past 6 months.

💥 An effective engagement strategy has long been a crucial, often overlooked, part of growing organically on LinkedIn.

And until recently if you had a solid content strategy you could get away with neglecting engagement. It wasn’t the end of the [LinkedIn] world as we know it.

Today commenting is no longer a nice to have – it is THE strategy. 
 
And, that’s not just commenting for the sake of doing so, but commenting thoughtfully, strategically, and with intent!

The ‘post body’ is the most substantial part of any written piece of content. It’s where all the value, wisdom, and earth-shattering insights get crammed in. 

It’s also where most readers eyes start to glaze over and where they make the decision to keep scrolling (or not). 

There’s a lot that we can do as creators to compel our readers to keep reading (and engage with us). 

➡️ On an aesthetic level we can break up our text so that it looks nice and is easy to skim
➡️ On the content level we can make sure to use laymen’s terms and speak in our ideal client’s language
➡️ On the strategic level we can pay close attention to creators we admire and respect and constantly be working to improve our own methods

How to travel back in time – Part 2

Last week I did a bit of time-travel. I talked about it in a post on Wednesday https://lnkd.in/eEY9NDSn – which was Part 1 of 2. 

This kind of time-travel doesn’t need fancy equipment. Although I did travel with the help of my very decidedly not fancy car (a tiny Suzuki from 2009), who’s only redeeming qualities are a butt-heater (important in Switzerland), great traction on snow (also important in Switzerland), and it’s so old it has NO electronics which means I can disconnect the battery when I go back to the US for half a year. Anyway – I digress terribly. 

Back to time-travel. 

I was just finishing up from a late afternoon walk in the woods and the sun had already set. 

As I was leaving the woods – which are on a hill around a big banana-shaped lake in Zurich – the moon was rising. It was a gorgeous big orange disc. 

I stopped my car to watch it rise and took a lousy photo through my windshield (it was bitter cold) – evidence below. And frankly it was so magic I didn’t want to waste time on the perfect shot. 

Once the moon had cleared the hills on the other side of the lake, I drove towards the city center and as I descended from the woods, I realized that the moon had all but disappeared. 

What an opportunity to watch the moon rise again! I parked my car and watched. 

You guessed it: I did this three times over and it was marvelous and a thrill each time. It did take me an hour to get back to my mom’s place, but hey, time-travel takes, well, time. 

It was a magic afternoon between the memory-time-travel on my walk through the woods earlier (see previous post) and then getting to watch the moon rise three times in a row. 

Some things in life are worth taking extra time out of your day to stop and savor. Like watching the moon-rise or (hopefully) reading wordy, non-business-related, posts on LinkedIn.
