The Engagement and Training Lead accountable for re-engaging frontline staff and developing an agile dual training strategy and implementation for both hardware and software for the East of England Ambulance Trust (EEAST)

The Trust’s existing electronic patient care record (ePCR) system had been in place since 2009 and would not address the future needs of the service. In addition, laptops heavily used by staff needed a refresh. Whilst the ePCR software contract was ending, it was uneconomical to maintain the existing laptops. 

Engagement

- Developed multi-channel staff engagement strategy for Programme Board approval.
- Updated Programme Board presentations.
- Pioneered Live Q&A at the Trust.
- Utilised multiple engagement channels, including a series of digital bulletins 'Change is Good', virtual Q&A sessions, in-person events and social media groups.
- Wrote targeted communications for different end user groups and regions.

If Amazon had given up on microservices architecture, why would you want to adopt it?

Yes, you read that right! AWS has given up on microservice architecture and adopted a monolith application model. They lost their mind, right? Why on earth would you go back to the terribly bad monolith?

I’ll tell you why: sometimes, simple is better. Sometimes, an engineer can be more productive if he has to follow a single code base, he can easily implement new features, iterate quickly, and fix bugs faster. His local development setup is also way simpler with a monolith application.

I strongly believe there are definitely use cases for the microservice architecture. BUT - I think the number is way less than how many companies are currently adopting this new “architecture” just because it’s more popular. If I think about a parallel, it’s like everyone would buy a Pagani car... They invest all the money they have in that car, and when the car breaks down, they won’t afford to repair it.

The ugly truth: it’s hard to explain this to a business person when their CTO “really thinks that’s the best strategy long term”.

I got kicked out of a client's Slack without warning.

A few months later, their entire business was gone.

One of my clients got acquired by another company. New ownership, new team.

I got removed from their Slack. Never received an invite to the new one. I assumed they didn't need me anymore. (Made sense, they were part of a bigger company now.)

In September, I started receiving emails from Heroku.

The apps for this client were scheduled for deletion. Unpaid invoice.

Whenever I get this email for any client, I jump on it. I reach out immediately and tell them to log in, update their payment, and clear the invoice.

Because if they don't, everything goes down. The website. The apps. The database.

If you lose the database, you lose everything. All your users, all their data, gone. You can rebuild if you have backups. Restore the data, spin up new servers, get back online.

But if that database gets deleted with no backup, there's nothing left. The business collapses.

I tried to reach them. No Slack access. Emails went unanswered.

Last week, I got a LinkedIn message from my former colleagues there.

Their app stopped working.

That's when I realized what happened. I explained everything to them.

They can't recover it.

The unpaid invoice was $100. Their entire business got wiped out.

After an acquisition or major team change, someone needs to own infrastructure monitoring and billing. Make it clear who that person is.

A single missed alert can cost everything.

Startups never think they’ll get hacked... until it happens.

I’ve watched teams rush an MVP into production, thinking: “Nobody cares about us yet. We’ll tighten security after launch.”

Then a single missed patch, a reused password, or a careless click and, BOOM! Customer data is compromised. The team scrambles, trust takes a hit, and the cleanup becomes the new roadmap.

Here’s the reality:
No company is “too small” for someone to notice. And the risk is never just technical, it’s reputational, financial, existential.

That’s why every contract I sign has a clear clause:
If pentests, third-party audits, and staff security training aren’t happening regularly, we’re not liable. If clients skip these basics, I can step away without arguments.

It’s not about looking for an excuse to walk. It’s making sure responsibility is real on both sides.
If you’re not taking security seriously, no dev or agency can carry all the risk for you.

The must-haves:
- Run regular pentests, even pre-launch
- Get a fresh set of eyes on all critical code and infra
- Teach the whole team to spot common attacks

Rushing to launch is good. Racing past security isn’t.

Security isn’t a checklist, it’s a habit you build from the start.

How do you make it part of your team’s DNA?

Here’s something nobody tells you about giving feedback: Most people don’t change the first time you ask.

Some never change at all.

So, when do you finally call it quits?

I’ve faced this as a founder, an engineer, a manager, and yes.... even as a friend.

You give feedback once. 
Maybe things shift for a day or two. 
You give it again. 
You get a polite nod, maybe an apology, maybe a promise. 
You give it a third time. 
Still back to square one.

Here’s my golden rule: 
Three clear conversations. 
Three months. 
No magic. 
No drama.

If nothing changes after that, it’s time to move on, no matter if it’s a teammate, a contractor, or a client.

Life’s too short to beg someone to care.

People who want to improve will show it, FAST!

The rest? 
Not your problem.

How fast do you reply?

I don’t mean “inbox zero” or frantic notifications all day. 
I mean: do people know you’re there?

Responsiveness isn’t just about speed. 
It’s about showing up, every time.

You know what happens when a teammate gets a real answer minutes after asking? 
Trust goes up. 
Work gets unblocked. 
Momentum snowballs.

Clients notice too. 
A quick, thoughtful reply beats a polished sales deck. 
If you answer fast, even to say, “Let me dig in and come back”, you’re already in the top 20%.

Productivity isn’t just about planning or tools. 
It’s built on tiny habits like this.

I’ve seen teams at Google, Apple, Amazon, and with every founder I work with, it’s the same story:
The fastest-moving teams respond fast. 
They don’t wait. 
They don’t leave things hanging. 
They create velocity and reliability, every single day.

🍕 Don’t serve burnt pizza.
MVPs test viability. MLPs (Minimum Lovable Products) win hearts, and markets.

We’ve moved past “first of X.” Users have options. If your first version only proves that people hate burnt pizza, you didn’t test pizza... you tested a bad slice.

How to design for love (fast):

Start with the user’s why, not the business why.
“Wouldn’t it be amazing if... users got this outcome?”

Separate problem from solution.
Park ideas; study pains. Diverge => converge => then build.

Listen, but not literally.
Ask, “What’s tedious, stressful, or painful?” Translate needs into products.

Choose your game.
Solve the highest-value problem you can commit to for years.

Make it lovable, not bloated:
Pick the one or two features that deliver undeniable value and a touch of pixie dust - that “oh wow, this gets me” moment. (Delight = word of mouth = momentum.)

Test smart:
Alpha loves you no matter what. GA is skeptical. Beta gives tough love you can act on.

When users say, “This is cool,” you’re viable.
When they say, “When can I use it?” you’re lovable.

They just dropped the new Cayenne - and here’s what got my attention:
It charges wirelessly. No more cables. No plugging in.
You just park, and it powers up.

A few years back, Tesla was the only name you heard if you wanted an electric car that felt futuristic.

But when Porsche starts rolling out features nobody else has, suddenly it’s not so clear who is ahead.

That’s the thing about tech.
Innovation never stands still.
What’s new today is standard tomorrow.

And if you don’t keep moving, you get left behind... fast.

What’s one thing you’re changing, learning, or building this year?

Last week, I told the story of my client who lost all their business.

I obviously suggested that they to restart the services, tell their users what happened, and ask them to sign up again.

Then, I realised that their business was simply moving along; it wasn’t growing, so it naturally just went down. That’s why they don’t want to put it back on.

If the product solves a real problem, I will sign up again and use it, even if they lost all my data. As long as I can easily set it back up and will solve my problem, I’ll use it. I might do my own backups, be more diligent, but will continue using it (especially when there’s no alternative for me). Tha's the sign of a grea product!

For example, would you sign up for ChatGPT again if it lost all your conversations? Hell yeah!

“If we just hire this sales consultant, our pipeline will explode.” 
I hear this all the time. But it rarely works that way.

A lot of founders hope that bringing in a sales consultant or agency will flip a switch. 
Suddenly, leads start pouring in. Revenue jumps. 
But it’s never instant, and it’s never magic.

A great sales consultant will give you a real edge. 
They’ll break down your current funnel, spot weak links, and show you strategies that actually work. 
They’ll share shortcuts and playbooks they built over years of trial and error.

But they can’t generate demand or close deals without your input. 
You still need a product that solves a clear pain. 
You still have to talk to customers, build trust, and do the gritty early work.

So what do you really get when you hire a sales consultant? 
Knowledge. 
Clarity on what works—and what doesn’t—faster than you’d get on your own. 
A path with fewer dead ends and less wasted time.

But instant results? 
That’s not how it happens. 

Hiring isn’t a shortcut to product-market fit or a ready-to-print-sales playbook. 
It’s an opportunity to move faster—if you’re ready to put in the work alongside them.

What distinguishes great software engineers?

I used to think changing my mind was a character flaw.
Now I think it might be the only way to grow.

I change my mind about almost everything.

The more I learn, the more I understand. And the more I understand, the more I change. Work methods. Priorities. What matters. What doesn't.

But lately I've been wondering what "change" really means.

When I change my mind, I'm not erasing what I used to think. I'm refining it. Adjusting it. Seeing it from a different angle because I know more now than I did six months ago.

Maybe change is just accumulation. Adding layers to what was already there.

And that feels different than being inconsistent or indecisive.

Growth shows up when you're willing to rethink what you thought you knew.

Some clients simply like working with you, and they’ll be the ones who come to you to extend your contract, give you a raise, and make sure you’re happy.

However, some clients are never satisfied even if you’ve given your 120%.

Life is short - respect your clients, but also remember to respect yourself first!

I feel like Transparency wins a lot in all aspects of life: relationships, career, business.

Sometimes, development teams hide the hard truths (tech debt, shortcuts, wrong estimates). Being honest, especially when it's uncomfortable, builds real trust for the long term.

Most “email marketing” advice is stuck in 2015.

Reminder: Most companies are preparing their 2026 budgets now. If you want to re-negotiate a contract, you should do it now. I had this last year where I wanted to re-negotiate the contract in mid-2025, but there was a strong push back that the 2025 budget was "set in stone", so there was less room to negotiate at that time.
