Took a story prompt last week from Christopher Davenport and used it on a customer's SMS campaign

Here's why it works
- Leads with a real person, making the issue tangible and relatable in seconds
- Provokes curiosity by revealing just enough of the story to earn the click
- Connects action to impact, helping supporters feel like their involvement matters

Bonus: Adding a heart emoji next to the recipient's name doesn't hurt.  It invokes curiosity when they scan their text inbox

This one had a lot of potential but broke my heart

1. It came from an Unknown Sender (no logo or name)
2. Lack of personalization (fallbacks are okay as a super last resort)
3. No spacing in the message so it landed as one big wall of text
4. Using a non-brand/shared short link, which does not inspire trust 

In fact, messages with shared short links will often trip carrier filtering and not be delivered (hence the low click rate)

Bonus: A graphic wouldn't have hurt. A picture is worth a thousand words

Every time we see the goal get closer… we get a tiny hit of dopamine

it's why we waste hours scrolling those silly videos in our feeds (please stop doing that)

That’s why milestone-driven fundraising works so well:

- Visible progress = motivation. The rising thermometer shows supporters their actions matter right now
- Milestones = micro-wins. Each celebration triggers a dopamine release — and people want to feel that again
- Surprises amplify the reward. Confetti, videos, shout-outs… unexpected delight boosts memory and excitement. Even vibrating and chirping phones!

Friction kills dopamine. So, Giving Games works without an app to download or another user account to set up.

Giving Tuesday does 2 things for us (but not just two)

1. Forcing function. A date that we have to launch by or we miss it. Powerful for many orgs who might struggle with execution otherwise 
2. A socially acceptable day to ask. Something many of us are challenged to do for any number of reasons (for me, it's fear of rejection)

So, go ask!

Just remember that it's the start of something great. Not a one-and-done, see you next year

We meet with 4 to 5 nonprofits per rep most days. That's 250 or more a month on average

I bet 60% of them who send (or have sent) texts to donors do so from a platform that doesn't allow for a reply.

Most CRMs and email programs just blast out with no real inbox

At least a way to say "hey, this isn't John" or "We moved out of the area..."

All of us want a story, but more than that, we want to see how we fit into it

A good story arc has a beginning (all is well), a problem or conflict (something bad happens), and a resolution or outcome (a hero helps, a transformation happens)

Where and how we invite people into that story matters. A lot.

In this example, I think it works because 

- Human-first framing — supporters engage faster when they meet a person, not a program
- Clear cause/effect — you (the reader) helped Michael → real change happened (transformation)
- Emotional micro-moment — a single turning point creates intrigue and earns the click

And pro tip: Adding the video as the very last thing in the message and forcing it to send as an MMS (multi-media message) will display a preview on most phones, making the video click much more enticing

Don’t design donation pages like a shopping cart
Design them like a moment of meaning

Where online giving must differ

- Online Giving = emotional choice while ecomm = functional choice
- Donors give because of identity, values, and story, while buyers want utility, desire, or convenience
- Impact + transparency matters over "product specs"
- Gratitude + follow-up creates loyalty while order confirmation is often the end of the journey
- 100% of the time, you can lead with (or at least present) monthly/recurring as an option

There is a lot you can learn from ecomm, but the differences shouldn't be overlooked.

💡 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗺𝘂𝗰𝗵 𝗶𝘀 𝗹𝗼𝗻𝗴-𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗺 𝘃𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗲 (LTV) 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗯𝘆 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗱 𝗴𝗶𝗳𝘁?

Last week I was curious whether I could see a change in LTVs based on 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝗮 𝗱𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗿 𝗺𝗮𝗱𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝘀𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗱 𝗴𝗶𝗳𝘁.

Obviously, these LTVs would be higher than those of a normal donor group because single-gift donors were removed, but would the speed of the second gift within that first year actually change the long-term value?

So I pulled data from 𝟯𝟱𝟬,𝟬𝟬𝟬+ 𝗱𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗿𝘀 who made a second gift within their first five years on file, and the pattern was clear:

👉 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗱 𝗴𝗶𝗳𝘁 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝗻, 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗵𝗶𝗴𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗱𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗿’𝘀 𝗹𝗼𝗻𝗴-𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗺 𝘃𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗲.

Donors who gave that second gift within 60 days were 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗵 𝗮𝗹𝗺𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝟮𝘅 more over five years than those who waited a full year.

I excluded any donors who were recurring, since the timing of their second gift is often just the next EFT draft.  I was more interested in how the donor's active choice to make that second gift impacted value.  

Also interesting: among all donors who made a second gift within five years
• 62% made it within the first year, and
• Nearly 20% did so within the first 60 days.

This reinforces something we’ve seen again and again:
💬 Getting that second gift quickly isn’t just a conversion metric -- 𝗶𝘁’𝘀 𝗮 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿 𝗼𝗳 𝗹𝗶𝗳𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝘃𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗲.

People respond to what feels personal. Don't you?

Neurology: The brain prioritizes messages that feel like they’re “for me.”

Even adding someone’s name triggers the fusiform gyrus (baby/momma faces, anyone?)

- Personalized texting beats generic blasts
- Segmenting increases relevance (and dopamine)
- Reply monitoring builds trust because it shows responsiveness

When texting donors, 1:1 or P2P outreach feels “safe” and “seen” -- blasts that feel generic don't create the same feels, thus don't create the bond that ties us together as humans.

This is great advice.

Stop launching your #GivingTuesday or year-end fundraiser at $0. 
I’ve watched too many strong campaigns underperform simply because they went live before showing even a tiny hint of momentum.

Behavioral science backs this up.

 People are far more likely to act when they see others already doing the thing (social proof and herd behavior), and they’re more motivated when a goal looks “in motion,” not untouched (the goal-gradient effect).

Here’s the smarter play:

1️⃣ Anchor the campaign with early supporters.
 Line up 3–5 early gifts from board members, champions, or monthly donors before you go public. You’re creating social proof that lowers the mental risk of giving.

2️⃣ Don’t press send at $0 raised.
 An empty thermometer reads like uncertainty. Even a small amount of visible progress signals that backing you is safe and worthwhile.

3️⃣ Name the momentum.
 “12 supporters already jumped in this morning” activates bandwagon behavior more effectively than any clever subject line.

4️⃣ Stack micro wins.
 Short progress updates throughout the day amplify the goal-gradient effect. The closer you appear to the finish line, the faster people give.

5️⃣ Help latecomers feel early.
 Don’t frame them as behind. Highlight what their gift unlocks next so they feel part of forward motion, not filling a gap.

Most nonprofits blame donor fatigue.

Often, the real issue is momentum fatigue — asking before you’ve built any.

A well-segmented list is key to getting the desired results, but perhaps any engagement is important if it creates awareness and conversation

In this case, the message
- Highlights what’s at risk — silence has consequences, so doing nothing isn’t neutral
- Inspires agency — makes the supporter feel like their voice can actually prevent harm
- Urgent tone — taps into a “this matters right now” mindset that boosts response rates

Sending a graphic along with the message would evoke even more feels

Side note: Given the message tone, an emoji didn't seem as necessary. Emojis need to be used cautiously as they can land differently across different groups (e.g. generations)

Call me crazy, but do we really have to tolerate bots filling out our website's contact forms to market us?

Anyone else sick of this?

I often get pushback when I suggest A/B testing a small list. But it doesn't take much to learn something

For this campaign, we only needed 500 contacts to come to a meaningful conclusion.

Campaign A had a story with an image and B did not (just an ask)

Randomly divided and sent, 250 contacts each.

That's a 54% response rate (measuring unique clicks) vs just 21% (still beats email!)
