You don't hear much about the affordability crisis on LinkedIn. Or even much about the tighter labor market. You'd think a professional platform would talk about the ground reality? But the reality that our young workers face doesn't sell Ads or promote the PR of BigTech companies. 

A platform that isn't in touch with GenZ. Meanwhile in reality, the unemployment rate for Americans between 20 and 24 just hit a ten-year high (excluding the pandemic). (see infographic below). 

Capitalism “isn’t working for young people,” the venture capitalist Peter Thiel told The Free Press this last week according to an Op-Ed by Derek Thompson. 

Scott Galloway seems to see himself as the spokesperson for this generation. He says he "believes young Americans are fed up with a country they’re raised to love but that doesn’t love them back." How true but how tragic? As an older generation holds on to power they are damaging the future, and it's not just a brutal labor market, the environment or national debt they are leaving the next generation. 

"Our spending priorities (entitlements), tax policies (capital gains and mortgage interest deductions), and fiscal priorities (bail-outs of incumbents) are the greatest transfer of wealth from young to old in history."

So why are Derek Thompson and Scott Galloway writing about this topic so much? Because demographics matters to how the future turns out. Are young people screwed in a world of AI, automation, workslop, inflation and wages that don't keep up with the cost of living? Where the average home buyer now skews 40 and the average young person plans on not getting married?

The unemployment rate among 16- to 24-year-olds is 10.5% — the highest since the pandemic and, excluding that period, the highest since 2016. Zoomers (GenZ) report feeling more lonely, depressed, and anxious, and less successful, than other generations. Why aren't we talking about this?

We are raising young people to follow the K-shaped recovery down, down in opportunity. Down in the ability to thrive and maybe even to survive. Immigration is down and wealth inequality is rising, what could possibly go wrong? There's a hiring freeze and we are telling young people AI will take their jobs if they aren't "AI literate" (whatever that means). 

The average age of first-time buyers just hit 40, an all-series record, according to the National Association of REALTORS. Toxic politics and ideology has driven a gender divide among U.S. youth in many parts of the country. Young men seem to be adapting worse, many falling between the cracks. 

Americans expect the labor situation to get even worse. A lot of young people feel powerless in a world that is leaving them and their future behind. While Tech Oligarchs and Tycoons talk business as usual and the transformative power of AI. Ask a young person if this is remotely true. I find more wisdom about the future on 5 min of TikTok, than a week on LinkedIn. We need to become more honest with what's going on.

Oxfordshire tech start-up 0-18m year one

Funded, developed and sold the world’s first MP4 player when Apple were at the shuffle stage of the MP3 market.

IT commodity broker UK US & EMEA ICs, CPUs & GPUs -  annual 9 figure sales (US$) per annum for half a decade. 

Achieved consultancy revenue of £400k year one which grew to £12.5M turnover (6 employees) within 9 years. 

Co-founder & pioneer biometric security/access control project with Bergdata AG.  The chip was gobbled up by ATMEL costing deals with Visa and Securicor (now G4S) on both access control and a secure payment solution branded ‘Fingermouse’ 

Promoted Versaki300 at the Alexander Palace (sold broadcasting rights to Star TV).

If we are to level up and have social justice we must end the waste of untapped talent we have in Britain. ReCognition Circular CIC Circular will do this by providing IT training to young people as well as making Birmingham and the wider West Midland's community more digitally inclusive. After a decade of working under the Paragon Certification Group banner, Global Quality Assurance broke away to develop and fund #ISOFlowandGo.   This will see a platform created to utilise both an Artificial Intelligence and Emotional intelligence based machine learning system to deliver continual improvement for Quality, Environmental, Health and Data Security standards based on the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). 

The project team included ISO expertise dating back to BS5750 days and a ‘tech’ resource that has driven 3 IPOs and more than a dozen exits in Tech Product, Service, infrastructure and Tech-enabled solutions.  The project saw the formation of GQA Online in 2021.

Built a distribution company from scratch and with just 50k Venture capital became Oxfordshire's most successful start-up. The vision was to create a one-stop shop for PC assemblers. We achieved 25% penetration of PC assemblers year one (conceived and developed the virtual cache 486-motherboard and took the I/O and video market by storm leading to the one-stop-shop distributor that caught the eye of Intel, Digital Research and Microsoft.  Personally hired and trained an enviable sales force, built credit lines with  Schroders (MMD with Intel & SGS support) Electron House PLC chairman (Bytech with Intel and  Microsoft support) and ASK Technology who expanded as a manufacturer tenfold in 18 months. Devised and successfully introduced several new products and solutions (and therefore brands) to the UK IT trade. Turnover of £18 million year one with a staff of 36 (GP of £1.8M) This was despite 1.1m exchange rate losses due to ERM  withdrawal (the Forex cover fell fell through and DK'd us) with expansion to two new premises during this time due to phenomenal growth that exceeded expectations. Oxfordshire's biggest  start up of the year was recognised by both Oxford Round table and Oxford Brookes University (offered  an Hon BSC in Economics for Entrepreneurship and Enterprise)

Entrepreneurs, like sales guns for hire, will never need a normal job because every business needs our spark. Those with the winning mentality need challenges, for we are driven far more by the desire to inspire, to develop ourselves and those we collaborate with. Success, sustainable success, must be driven by far more than commercial reward if one is to really end each day having won and therefore succeeded.  

So who am I?
A Gentleman by name and nature I was the fire starter at Packard Bell, then moved on to inspire Ideal Hardware PLC and Datrontech HK (later PLC) as well as my own business from zero to 18m in year one by the age of 27 (which inspired Oxford Brookes to offer a degree). Regarded as a tech 'player' and consumer electronics entrepreneur (MP3 & MP4 pioneer along with some other products that make us think 'really' even though we bought one). Top 5 for storage, CPU and memory sales in EMEA for 10 year+ topping a $billion a year! Top salesman at every company I have owned or worked with/for. Former LEA Governor and NGFL influencer, Lincoln City Fundraiser of the year (2009) and New Football Pools Online Fanzine writer of the year (2009).

Neil Gentleman-Hobbs

An important warning from Sundar Pichai the CEO of Alphabet Inc. (Google's parent company) in an interview with the BBC, that is no doubt part of a wider Magnificent 7 campaign that infers that Big tech is a too big to fail. He feels we are all in this together and therefore what is left of free market capitalism is all hooked into supporting the waning budgets and debt piles of the big compute guys like Oracle Microsoft NVIDIA Palantir Technologies Amazon Web Services (AWS) all pushing OpenAI and Anthropic

In his interview with the BBC, he stated that "no company is going to be immune" if the AI boom collapses, even Alphabet itself.

The key points/ take aways from the interview are:

Market Irrationality: He described the current period as an "extraordinary moment" but admitted there are "elements of irrationality" in the market, drawing a parallel to the "irrational exuberance" of the dotcom era.

Long-Term View: Despite the bubble risk, he maintained that AI, like the internet before it, is a "profound" technology that will fundamentally change things.

The interview also covered other major concerns about AI, including its "immense" energy demands, which he said would cause delays in Alphabet's net-zero climate goals, and the potential for "societal disruptions" and job displacement. He advised that people who learn how to use AI tools will do better in their professions

I tend to disagree. Outside the 'bigger is better' model for the cartel circle of self interest, SLMs (small and specialised language models) or AI agents do not need huge compute. Sovereign and encrypted AI is possible using reducing reliance on the 7 tech gatekeepers who want control along with their cartel co-members, namely, their energy buddies. 

So is it time to think differently or option B partner up with Google?
