I’ve always carried a notebook.

Even in the field, covered in dust, surrounded by sensors, half-finished prototypes, and unanswered questions, I wrote things down. Numbers, equations, but most importantly stories: Stories on what worked, what failed, and why people believed in one idea but not another.

That notebook became a habit, and a philosophy.

I started seeing patterns. The best tech didn’t win. The best stories did. The inventions that earned trust from investors, clients, or the public were the ones that made people feel the science, not just understand it.

Today, I work with deep tech founders who are building the future but struggle to fund itThey have the technology, the patents, the research, but not the language that makes people believe in their vision.

Together, we translate their breakthroughs into narratives that attract consistent clients, funding, and long-term believers.

We'd just built Henry a prosthetic arm for $20.

Compared to $100,000 arms, this should've changed everything. 

It didn’t. It made things worse.

Henry tries it on while patients, doctors, and other OTs watch.

Then Henry starts the list:
"Velcro straps need padding. Elbow joint wobbles. Need neoprene for comfort..."

The arm worked $20 in materials. We could 3D print arms in 48 hours. 

But getting comfort and fit right requires prosthetists, OTs, hours spent fitting. That would easily spike costs to $5-7K. 

Prosthetists couldn’t bill insurance for a cheap arm. 
No markup = no money = no help for Henry.

That's when I read what Easton LaChappelle discovered with his $7,000 TrueLimb:

"Prosthetists were hesitant to work with us because our price point was so low, they couldn't mark it up to what they were used to."

We became the problem we tried to solve.

Henry needed those OTs. Those OTs needed to get paid. The system that pays them won't support low-cost, affordable arms.

The technology wasn't the bottleneck. The economics was.

I stopped engineering prosthetics.

I started asking what story needs to change for the economics to work?

Great tech + bad business model = expensive failure. 
Right story with decent tech = market transformation

My first published story broke every writing rule I later learned.

Feb 17, 2020: Started writing fiction. 

No Hero's Journey.
No three-act structure. 
No Save the Cat Beat sheet.

Just wrote what felt right.

164 stories later, a published author friend asked: 'Which framework do you follow?' 
'Framework?' 'You know... Hero's Journey, Dan Harmon's Circle, Blake Snyder's beats?'

I googled them all that night.

My published stories violated every single 'rule.' 
My unpublished ones? The few where I'd tried to be 'correct.'

Frameworks make you sound like everyone else who uses that framework.

It's like using the same Instagram filter as everyone else. Sure, you look professional. But it looks like everyone else's professional.

The stories that actually connected with readers:
• Villain redemptions with no mentor
• Had heroes who never left home
• Started with the end

All 'wrong' by framework standards. All loved by actual readers.

Frameworks are autopsy tools, not birth certificates. 

Use them to understand why something worked. Not to create something that works.

Your weird, broken, 'incorrect' story is more interesting than your perfectly structured one.

The publishing industry doesn't need another Hero's Journey. 
It needs YOUR journey.

Write 1,000 words today. 
Follow zero rules. 
Break something beautiful.

We spent 3 weeks trying to justify betraying our users for $35K. Every path meant a worse prosthetic for them.
We quit.

Upper-limb amputees told us they wanted modular hands for specific tasks. 

From cooking to typing. Like a camera-bag of hands.

I met with the business development lead. Her approval would get me $35K and more partnerships.

But when I presented to her, she didn't get it.

"The market's already saturated. Why pursue this?"

The project died on the mahogany table.

We spent 3 weeks trying different angles.
• What if we added features to justify higher prices? 
• What if we repositioned the value?

Every solution led us to the same conclusion. 
Add features so it's more expensive to make it fundable.

We quit because I wasn't going to betray the amputees who told us what they needed.

Had to take a different path. 

I learned that ideas are invisible if I can't get others to care.

Started researching how others get visibility without hype & keep their integrity.

Theranos raised $724M with pure hype. Real healthcare startups died waiting.

CRISPR researchers overpromised in 2012. Investors got PTSD from Theranos.
Legitimate gene therapy went unfunded.

Then Intellia Therapeutics changed their pitch:
"We're advancing in vivo gene editing for specific diseases. Lead candidates in clinical trials."

Same tech. Different story. They got $108M Series B.

Funding follows evidence, not promises or missions.

Getting visibility without hype means:
1. Your origin story (why YOU started)
2. One problem you solved this week (with evidence)
3. Post it

That's how you avoid death on the mahogany table.
