“Had Germany not decommissioned nuclear power after the Fukushima accident, it would have needed 50% less electricity generation from fossil fuels, 84% less generation from imported natural gas, 27% less fossil fuel capacity and 42% less natural gas capacity.“

Merz was right in saying that Germany shutting down its nuclear plants was a “serious strategic mistake”. As individuals Germans can be the most rational people you’ll ever meet. As a collective though they can be the most irrational on the planet. Their energy strategy has been driven by decades of useful idiots idioting (though somehow even less so than the Brits, who’ve just seemed to have gone off the rails on many, many things).

Europe, you need to act with a LOT more urgency. Vibe shifts are needed. Culture has to change. Regulations need to be streamlined or scrapped. The private sector must be prioritized. Entrepreneurs and builders should be celebrated and championed. 

Peter is making the right move. Europe is sadly not doing enough yet to merit the very talented and ambitious staying. Hopefully it adapts fast.

“As soon as they have their first contract with the defence department, even if just €10M, with [that] €10M they can go to the market and get €100M. That is the signal they need”. 

Again, European governments need to prioritize being customers of first resort for European tech, and they need to stop LARPing as VCs of last resort. The focus has to shift to government being sources of revenue for tech companies, and away from being a slow drip of subsidies. There's more than enough handouts in European tech. Local customers are needed.

Ugly, ugly stats for Europe in one of the present and future's most important tech categories...but there will be Europeans arguing that this is actually a good thing because economic growth, financial prosperity, tech sovereignty, and so on are bad for society. It's luxury beliefs and delusions all the way down as they refuse to accept the reality that change is desperately needed.

Europe, if you really want to see the science and research that gets created on your shores get commercialized; if you really - and I mean REALLY - want to see your scientists become world-class entrepreneurs, stop the innovation theatre and give the money you're wasting on performative government programs to Wilbe instead. They will do far better things that you can ever possibly hope to. 

Wilbe is one of the best things to happen to European scientists and spinouts. For anyone who cares about that sort of thing, show your support. Put your money where your mouth is. Give it to Wilbe. Hooray for science! 👩‍🔬

Ugh, the FT ranking startup hubs is just as cringe as their business school rankings. It's just a matter of time before Madrid starts fudging their numbers as is tradition (Hi IE Business School! 👋). 😉 

I've invested in companies in a whole bunch of European countries, sit on boards of companies and funds in at least half a dozen European countries, speak at events and network all across Europe...and I haven't heard of the vast majority of these programs or whatever they mean by "hubs". It's a weird list let alone ranking.

"Its consistent track record in connecting early-stage founders with financing opportunities across Bavaria". Isn't that what every ambitious, globally thinking entrepreneur wants? Bavarian financing opportunities! 🤦‍♂️ How about focusing on things that matter like outcomes, and not access to local government subsidies. Crazy, I know.

Hugo Amsellem is right. Visit any European university and they will proudly point to the spot where some scientific breakthrough happened, or where some technology was invented...but they usually go quite quiet when the subject of where that science or technology was commercialized, scaled, turned into a giant company, and created massive wealth. It usually didn't happen in Europe.

The best science and technology often doesn't win. It's usually who gets the money early (contracts or funding) who does. Then they can buy the best science and technology. Selling matters, whether it's with regards to talent, capital, or the public's imagination. Europeans can sell the hell out of luxury goods and lifestyles. They need to remember how to do so in the sciences too.

"The test was always simple: does it provide as much legal certainty as the Delaware Inc? If not, founders and investors will continue to use Delaware Inc as a global investment standard. Europe needs a pan-European alternative to stay competitive in a world of giants.”

The EU watering this down was always to be expected, sadly. 27 different variations of EU–INC is less than ideal...but it's what happens when you have a collection of countries who, despite all logic to the contrary, still put national interests above the collective good of Europe. 

I hope common sense prevails at the Commission, but regardless of the outcome, the good people at EU–INC deserve thanks and appreciation from Europe's startup community. Too often apathy overcomes hearts and minds, but you lot have shown dogged persistence in trying to make Europe a little bit better of a place to start, build, and scale companies. That's more than what 99.99% of people have done. Engaging with the bureaucratic and political world is a mostly thankless endeavor, but I applaud you all. 👏 

You're an inspiration to those who want to take a swing at the bureaucratic beast. Hopefully someday the monster shall be felled and Europe will be the best place to do business. Until then, props to those who tried: Andreas Klinger, Iwona Anna Biernat, Vojtech Horna, Philipp Herkelmann, Simon Schaefer, and the rest of the team. 🫡

A lot of people are still underestimating the compounding rates of progress in AI.

Europe needs a true Delaware equivalent system…and this ain’t it. The EU is watering it down too much. It's ultimately as fragmented as before. The EU is just putting lipstick on a pig and calling it a beauty. As is Delaware remains the better option. European founders deserve better.

Also, the illustration of the gears is cracking me up as it includes gears which are redundant and unnecessary. It would be a smoother operation without them. There's an EU analogy in there.
