I got rejected for every single trading job I applied for.

I didn’t have the right qualifications and I didn’t know where to start.

However, I took a risk and signed up for a trading seminar in London. I got the overnight bus from Cologne.

The seminar was basic but it taught me two key concepts:

It got me started on my path. I realised that the opportunity to trade for a living was there if I worked for it.

Today a bunch of us from the Lifepoint Healthcare Ltd team got together and it was marvellous 😀. First a full on superb meal to feast like royalty to celebrate us in general, and also our triple whammy awards last year at at Tony Page Island Grill Marylebone. 

This was followed by a brilliant guided painting get together at Art Play London in Shoreditch. 

We are a fully remote team and getting together for is so meaningful. 

Really love my colleagues and the team we have built. Proper grateful I am. 😀

The biggest risk in my business wasn’t the market. It was me.

Over the years I’ve learned something no one really prepares you for when you start a business.

The hardest part isn’t always getting going - It’s knowing when the way you lead has to change.

One of the clearest realisations I’ve had recently is this:
I’ve been the single biggest bottleneck - Not out of ego or control, but out of care.

From day one I believed, and needed, to stay close to everything. Across all departments. If I stayed involved, standards stayed high. Clients were protected. Risks were managed. Revenue was safe. Nothing important slipped through the cracks.

In the early years, that was exactly right.

Since around 2018 I’ve been slowly trying to change that. Getting a lot of business coaching for myself played a bit role. And filtering through my coaching to coach my own team as needed.

Delegating more. Giving people space to step up. Building ownership instead of dependency. It hasn’t been dramatic and it’s been gradual. Sometimes clumsy and often uncomfortable. But always intentional. And it’s worked.

The business today is miles ahead of where it was then. 
But growth quietly changes the rules.

What once looked like good leadership can, over time, become the very thing that holds a business back. And even though I’ve been moving in this direction for years, this year feels different. It’s time to step back even more.
Because somewhere along the way, care turned into reliance.

Too many decisions waited for me.
Too many problems landed on my desk.
Too much depended on whether I was available that day.
That isn’t resilience.
That’s a single point of failure.

The hard truth is that a business can only grow as far as the founder is willing to stop being at the centre of everything.

So this year I’m making a deliberate shift.

Less trying to be everywhere. More building clarity so others can lead.
Less being the glue that holds everything together. More creating the structure that lets the business move without me in every loop.

Not because I want to step away. I love being in the kitchen.
But because I want the business to properly step up.

If you run a small business and feel constantly stretched, there’s a good chance this will resonate. Very often the real constraint isn’t the market or the team. It’s the founder still carrying a version of the business the company has already outgrown.

And if you’re an adviser reading this who wants more than just a seat at a desk. If you want responsibility, autonomy, and the chance to shape outcomes rather than just follow instructions. That’s exactly the kind of environment we’re building at Lifepoint.

In my mind, growth isn’t about doing more yourself.

It’s about building something that doesn’t need you to do everything.

That’s the shift I’m making this year.
