What carbon markets are experiencing is structural transformation.

Quality now matters more than volume.

Demand remains resilient. Retirements held steady in 2025 even as voluntary issuance declined. Capital now splits between projects meeting rising integrity standards and those that don’t.

The convergence between voluntary and compliance markets is the dominant structural shift redesigning carbon finance.

Compliance demand now accounts for 24% of total market activity. Projections suggest it could match or exceed voluntary purchases by 2030. Meanwhile, frameworks like the The Integrity Council for the Voluntary Carbon Market (ICVCM)’s Core Carbon Principles and Article 6 mechanisms are forcing a quality reset.

But additionality failures and over-crediting remain active threats capable of collapsing buyer confidence.

• Carbon markets enter 2026 with resilient demand despite volatile issuance

• High-integrity ARR credits rose from USD14 to USD26 per tCO2e in 2025, with top-rated projects commanding above USD35
