just found this crystal ball called history 🔮 and methinks we're about to see a shift in consumer appetites and here's what I think we'll see:

-> Privacy as a luxury. This happened in the 80s when people used unlisted numbers, and I bet it'll happen again. Invisibility will be the new signal of wealth and I bet brands that don't track and don't personalize might actually do better.

-> Anti-optimization. When everything is optimized, nothing feels human, and we're gonna see imperfection become premium. 

-> Earnestness is gonna replace cringe. People are gonna get tired of irony and 200 layers of meaning and the AI slop that covers it all, and sincerity as a form of rebellion is gonna be cool again.

-> Silence = content. I think we're going to see a rise in negative space, in brands going silent on social (or at least getting quieter), on smaller brands being more mysterious. 

-> But can I hold it? I think we're going to see the rise of print again. In-person experiences, phone calls, handwritten notes. bring. back. stationery. (JK It never went away). 

-> Algorithm OFF. I think we are craving discovery (bring back stumbleupon!!) and we're going to see a move towards nostalgia-based marketing. Group watch parties. 

-> Longform content will riseeeee. I think we'll see longer YouTube repair videos, expert TikToks, and people who know their shit takeover. We are tired of surface-level bullshit

At least I hope so, because damn I really want to see a beautifully produced catalog in the mail that I can circle and cut things out of and hang up on my wall.

I've partnered with insane creatives at teams like Wolff Olins, worked on  campaigns for brands like Rippling, Humanoids, and Learnexus, mentored more than 10 writers, 2 designers, and 2 project managers a year for the past 10 years, and worked on everything from single webpage launches to massive campaigns reaching more than 2,000,0000 monthly active users. 

And the thing that separates successful campaigns from flops comes down to 3  leadership traits:


1/ Clarity (Clear brief = clear path to success). Messy brief = heartbreak. 

This one sounds obvious, but lord have mercy, you'd be surprised how easy it is to run forward on projects or campaigns without clear goals. If you don't know what you're working toward, how will you be able to build something that matters and, more importantly, how will you get your team to back it?

My advice: make sure your team understands why you're doing what you're doing. Not just WHAT you're doing. 

Red flag: They lack goals and blame their ICs when something goes wrong.
Green flag: They recognize gaps and work to fix it for the next launch. 

2/ Treat your team with dignity and respect. 

We shouldn't have to say this or think this, but we've all been under managers or team members who were less than kind, and it's so weird to me. When we spend more time at work than with our kids, our families, and our hobbies, we at least want our team to support and celebrate us. I think too often, leadership looks at people as productivity tools and, for some reason, there's a weird narrative that you have to be really rough on your team to get them to do what you want. I think winning is winning, and when you're all working towards the same goal and you clarify it from the beginning, everyone wants to help you succeed. 

Remember: your team members probably aren't lazy, stupid, or shitty. You hired them for a reason, so give them the resources the need to succeed, the mentorship to get there, and the courage to take risks. I bet they'll surprise you. 

3/ Transparency.

They make good decisions in the open and let their team understand the process behind those decisions. Obviously, that's not 100% possible in every single instance, and there are some things that note every IC needs to hear, but I have seen the most success with teams that mix vulnerability and professionalism to be transparent about what they want.
