Unsolicited #SEO tip: I know it's not fashionable to look at how search engines actually work anymore, but Google has a HILARIOUS patent which is specifically designed to f* with you 🤡 

♠️ If they detect a bunch of activity which makes them want to rank the page better, they could do the *reverse* and bomb the ranking. The bluff is to try and lure search engine manipulators into doing more activity.

🚦 The idea is over time, Google can correlate these sudden shifts to manipulative behaviour to determine is someone is trying to game the system.

We covered "Changing a Rank of a Document by Applying a Rank Transition Function" patent on the SEO Patent Podcast, I've popped a link in comments.

Unsolicited #SEO tip: You hear all those GEO experts tell you that schema is super-important for AI systems? It's BS, and I have the receipts ⬇️🦆

Edit for clarity: This test is showing that schema is treated like any other text so does not “work” and is not specifically used as intended. Apologies for 🇬🇧 sarcasm.

I've commonly seen "proof" that LLMs are parsing structured data in real-time when people perform an experiment such as only including the company address in the schema, not the 'visible' content . The fact an LLM could return this address is 'proof' they are using schema.

So here is what I did:

I set up a page for a fictional company "DUCKYEA t-shirts" and did not include a company address on that page. 

Instead, I completely made up my own JSON-LD schema:

The result, when I ask ChatGPT or Perplexity: "what is the address of this company? [url]"

I got: "The address shown on that page (in its embedded structured data) is: 77 The Muddy Bank, South Pondshire, DK99 YEA, United Queendom."

My conclusions:

1️⃣ Firstly, I am *not* saying "schema is not worth it". Google specifically say they use their KG with their AI systems, and structured data helps reduce ambiguity (that is kinda your job). Still do schema.

2️⃣ I have long argued that because of how base LLMs are trained, the explicit nature of schema is lost, because the models do not retain training data. They are simply building a mesh of probabilities between tokens, your schema is lost within that.

3️⃣ In my opinion, this test shows that the LLM agent is simply picking up whatever you are listing in the HTML. It does not matter if it is valid schema. If the system interprets the text as relevant to the prompt, it is included. It would therefore indicate that schema is *not* being used in the explicit sense it was designed for with those systems.

The takeaway: Schema, good. Repackaging the basics as some magical new GEO formula, bad.

Richard Barrett told me he did this test first, and I wanted to repeat it. I don't think he drew a duck, though.

🛒 Google announces Universal Commerce Protocol, a new standard for agentic commerce,​. UCP will allow agents to discover and purchase products more easily and will add new checkout features to AI Mode and Gemini. 

🧑‍💼 ​Google announces Business Agent, a "branded AI agent" that can answer questions on behalf of retailers​. This feature launches with eligible US retailers today and can be activated within Merchant Center.

🤖 ​Microsoft announces new agentic features: Copilot Checkout and Brand Agents​. These are Copilot's direct equivalents to Google's agentic checkout and Business Agent feature mentioned above.

🧑‍⚕️ ​OpenAI announces ChatGPT Health, a dedicated tool that provides personalised health advice​. This tool can connect to users' medical records and health apps to personalise and ground its answers.

✨ ​The presence of AI Overviews in search results is driven by engagement​. Google's Robby Stein confirmed that user engagement and click data directly impact AIOs, personalisation and more.

🔍 ​AI search results can be manipulated through fake FAQs, Medium posts and AMAs​. This study by Ahrefs featured a fake brand and proves that third-party sources can heavily influence AI search results, but will vary by model. via Mateusz Makosiewicz

📑 ​Google advises against "chunking" - turning your content into bite-sized chunks​. On last week's Search Off the Record podcast, Danny Sullivan recommends that you shouldn't "craft anything for search or LLMs specifically".

📉 ​ChatGPT's share of worldwide traffic for LLMs drops by 22% while Gemini increases by 49%​. It is worth noting, this data is based on direct domain visits for AI chatbots rather than API usage or embedded assistants. via Matt G. Southern

🌐 ​Google introduces Chrome Auto Browse to Chrome​. Google is launching a Gemini-powered agentic experience that can complete multi-step research and browsing processes.

❗​Yahoo launches Yahoo Scout, an AI-powered answer engine​. Yahoo Scout uses Claude and, most interestingly, it appears to be more friendly than other AI search engines when linking directly and opening to websites.

🤷 ​AI search results are inconsistent, even when using identical prompts​. This study across Claude, ChatGPT and Gemini shows that AI search very rarely returns the same list twice, and almost never in the same order. via SparkToro / Rand Fishkin

🔀 ​Follow-up questions in AI Overviews can send users directly to AI Mode​. This is Google trying to make search "even more seamless" and definitely feels like a push to integrate AI Mode more widely across their search features.

🔍 ​The UK government proposes new measures to improve Google Search​. The Competition and Markets Authority has confirmed new measures such as publisher controls, fair ranking and access to Google Search data. 

🛑 ​Google adds Google-Extended​, a new user-agent that lets websites manage how their content is used to train our Gemini models. This follows the CMA proposal to allow more control over how Google uses website content.

📉 ​Similarweb reports a decrease in zero-click searches across ecommerce SERPs due to the increasing number of ads​. It's not just the AI Overviews 'stealing' our organic clicks, paid results are stealing them too! via Aleyda Solís

📊 ​Bing Webmaster Tools tests a new AI performance report​. While this isn't officially announced, it seems that this report allows users to see how many times Copilot has cited their website and across how many pages. via Barry Schwartz

Unsolicited #SEO tip: When you're thinking about how Google works, thinking about "the algorithm" as single, monolithic thing with static weightings is not helpful. ❌ 

🔄 Google uses multiple scoring systems which all pass information to each other.

📘 In Google's own documentation, they tell us the weighting of different factors is changed by the type of query. 

⚖️ In Google's "How Google Fights Disinformation" they say "where our algorithms detect that a user's query related to a 'YMYL' topic, we will give more weight in our ranking systems to factors like understanding of the EEAT of the pages we present"

🚦 In short; what works for one topic, vertical, or website, may not apply to another - so it is useful to think about this when planning your strategy.

Unsolicited #SEO tip: Exact Match Domains (EMDs) still work and can be a short cut to ranking. Here's a video showing you an easy way you can find 1000s of EMDs with good search volume 😎 

Here's how to find EMDs fast with Ahrefs and Google Colab:

 1️⃣ Go to Ahrefs "Keywords Explorer" tool and enter the root keyword you want your EMD to be about

2️⃣ Go to the "Keyword Ideas" page to see the list of terms containing this keyword with MSV

3️⃣ Click "Export" and choose UTF-8 CSV format, along with how many rows you want to export

4️⃣ Go to the Google Colab script and select "Run All" (link in comments)

5️⃣ Select "Choose Files" at the bottom of the script and upload the CSV you got from Ahrefs

6️⃣ Wait and you will get 3 files:

🎉 available_domains.csv: Showing which domains are free + MSV

🛑 unavailable_domains.csv: Domains currently already registered + MSV

💀 errors.csv: If there were any errors
