I met the Co Founder of Cursor, Aman Sanger, over the weekend. They grew from zero to $1 billion ARR in under two years.

Here is the best insight I took away from him.

Two years ago Cursor found an engineer in Germany they absolutely loved. He cleared every interview, every test, and every real world challenge they threw at him. And if you know Cursor, you know how brutally hard it is to build in AI where everything changes every few weeks.

So when they finally offered him the role he declined. This was during Cursor’s most critical growth phase when every hire directly shaped the company.

Most teams would move on. Aman did the opposite.
Aman and his team stayed in touch with him for an entire year.

Brainstorming together. Sharing engineering feedback. Keeping the relationship warm.

Then Aman invited him to the US for an intimate dinner with top AI engineers.
The moment he RSVP’d yes they built the entire event around him in just two weeks. They brought the best people in the room to show him exactly what Cursor’s culture feels like.

The idea was simple. Let people experience the culture and the mission and they will want to be part of it.

It worked.
Within a week they rolled out another offer.
This time he accepted.

One of the smartest ways I have seen a company close a hire.

There are a few engineers who outperform an entire twenty person team. This person was one of them. And Cursor was willing to go the extra mile to bring that kind of talent in.

AI for SRE | Co-Founder at Scoutflo | Ex-Zoominfo, Ex-Highlight (YC W23)

I want to share the dark side of being a founder that never shows up on LinkedIn.

Two years ago, I quit my job.
For six months, my parents didn’t know I was unemployed.
And then my grandmother got hospitalized.

Since I was the sole earner, nobody knew I was quietly burning through my savings.

My grandmother was detected with a tumor. We had to operate immediately. 
No insurance, No safety net and the medical bills kept piling.

My dad, worried during all this asked me,
“You’re getting your salary on time, right”

And I had to look him in the eye and lie…
“Yeah, don’t worry. I’ll take care of it.”

Sadly, in the middle of all this, she passed away.
That month was absolute rock bottom. Really grateful for Vedant Vyawahare and the team for genuinely handling work when I could not even turn up.

During this time we were also fundraising for Scoutflo
Good or bad, it took us a few months after that to close our first round.

Today, we have an office, a strong product, paying customers and a team I’m genuinely proud of.

But that one year
The unemployment, the medical crisis, the financial drain, the uncertainty..
That is the real price of choosing to be a founder.
You trade comfort for responsibility.
You trade stability for a chance at something that 𝘮𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵 work.

If you are thinking of starting a company, here are three things I wish someone had told me:

1. Whatever timeline you are prepared for, double or triple it. Nothing moves fast. Everything takes longer than you expect.
2. Have real savings and a separate emergency fund. Not just for your startup. For your house and your family.
3. Build a real support system. Friends and family. You will need people when everything feels like it is falling apart. This is not a sprint. It is a long, messy, unpredictable marathon.

Founders get glamorized a lot. But behind every “we raised a round” post, there is usually a year nobody ever sees.

If you are choosing this path, choose it consciously.
It is a minimum five year commitment of your life.

It’s not your wedding but it can be your customer. My co founder, Vedant Vyawahare told me this.

I had just landed in Jaipur for a friend’s wedding.

We had an 11 am call with Goldcast, and minutes before the call I realised the VP of Engineering was also based in Jaipur.

I was technically out for the day, the wedding itinerary was packed. But the call went great. Vedant tells me, “See if you can go late to the event. It’s not your wedding but it can be your customer.”

So we made it work. I rushed across the city, met kapil kumawat in person, he tried Scoutflo and he genuinely loved it. 

We start the POC next week. 🙌

We found a simpler way to fix CrashLoops and failed rollouts in Kubernetes.

Most teams still debug these issues with the same workflow we used 5 years ago. A long list of manual guesses. Check logs, events, metrics, configs, and hope the pattern finally connects.

I’ve officially been told to stop using work lingo in personal chats 🥲

Everyone’s suddenly building their “AI SRE” by just wiring a few MCPs into Claude. Let me save you some time, that’s not how it works.

MCP is not intelligence. It’s just access.

Here’s the difference 👇

AI Agents
1. Autonomous systems that plan, decide, and act based on goals and real-time signals
2. Use reasoning, memory, and context chaining to perform multi-step operations
3. Operate on goals, not prompts, they plan dynamically based on feedback and changing conditions

Example: An SRE agent that detects a deployment failure, fetches recent logs, identifies the faulty commit, and triggers a rollback


Model Context Protocol (MCP)
1. A standardized protocol that lets models securely access tools, APIs, and data sources
2. Provides structured semantic context without embedding logic or reasoning
3. Supports tool discovery and invocation without persistent memory or reasoning loops

Example: An MCP server exposing Prometheus metrics, which an agent can query during RCA

Plugging MCPs into an LLM doesn’t make it an agent. It just makes it a better interface.

If you’re serious about building an AI SRE, start thinking about agent architecture, memory, and real-time reasoning, not just integrations.

Executing repeat the same routines every week even without real progress because their philosophy is that nothing will break as long as they stay comfortable and that everything will eventually work out.
