Investing benefits women and makes our societies resilient and our economies stronger. International Women’s Day is a great opportunity to advance this. 

This week, I attended an informative IWD event at Upvest in Berlin and captured a few key takeaways. Moderated by Dr. Cosima Karmann, the panel featured Natasha Wear (Zopa Bank), Ausra Cesnaite (N26), Fatima Hussain, LL.M. (LIQID), and Symmie Swil (Upvest). Two themes emerged:

1️⃣ Fintechs help close an economic & confidence gap by clarifying information, lowering barriers to entry to investing, and encouraging positive financial habits. 

2️⃣ Leadership matters for retaining female talent. That means addressing bias, advocating for people not in the room, and building strong networks inside and outside companies. It involves deliberate actions by both women and men.

📈 One main metric for next year: more women investing.

Everybody should care about employer branding, even when not hiring.

Cassandra Hoermann shared three gems on employer branding in a recent webinar hosted by Jay Anna Harris-Theis for the Earlybird portfolio:

💎 “The best employer brands are built from the inside out.”
Ask yourself: What habits, rituals, and unique aspects already exist inside your company? How can you share them so the outside reflects the inside, while still supporting business goals?

💎 “Your founders are your employer brand.”
Encourage founders and leadership to share content that reflects who they are. It builds trust and makes the brand more relatable. And it’s not simply vanity metrics; a strong reputation helps retention and can lower hiring costs.

 💎 “Don’t say you have a great culture; show it.”
Move away from generic claims by sharing concrete examples: employee stories, growth journeys, and product wins. Make the culture visible.

🤝 Cassandra encouraged Talent and Marketing teams to work more closely: Shared calendars, visibility into product plans, and alignment on company messaging can benefit both sides. These teams may even have different ICPs, yet this can be an opportunity to learn from each other.

Meeting long-time LinkedIn contacts IRL is enlightening. 💡

Since 2021, I’ve known Etien Yovchev, Co-founder & Managing Partner of The Recursive, but we finally met in Berlin for a coffee. ☕️ Etien offers a shining example of ecosystem dedication and of successfully running a media business in these complex days.

We can all learn from it:

🇧🇬 Hailing from Bulgaria, Etien earned his Master’s degree in Innovation Management in Amsterdam before heading back to Sofia to launch The Recursive with Irina Obushtarova, who has since moved to an advisory role. 

The Recursive is a lean team of 16 people, and notably, it has a 3-part structure: The Media side, a PR Storytelling Studio, and an Events side. In a symbiotic fashion, the media side grows contacts and feeds the PR Studio, which fuels the other parts. Events serve as a platform for connection and spotlights.

Historically, they’ve focused on fintech and deeptech, including university spinouts. Topics like Quantum, SpaceTech, DefenseTech, and scaleups are all top of mind. Think cargo drones and more.

While their core focus is news out of CEE, it’s also always about growth. Many CEE startups see DACH as a logical first market for expansion, so The Recursive aims to be a matchmaker for that.

I’ve been glad to facilitate content via The Recursive from Earlybird Venture Capital and portfolio companies, and I'm excited to see more CEE x DACH and even UK synergies! Let’s go. 🙌

VC team dinners are more than sustenance. They signal alignment.

📍At a recent team dinner in Berlin, we gathered with our Partners, Christian and Tim, for a meal. In conversations among investors, engineers, finance teammates, communicators, assistants, and office managers, we exchanged ideas and anecdotes. 

It was great to sit with colleagues who work cross-functionally, blending their diverse experiences and backgrounds. We had Italy, Switzerland, Hungary, Albania, Germany, Morocco, the US & the UK all represented at the table.

Multiple languages and vibes, but one goal: to collaborate well. 🤝

And this is only a piece of the pie! We also have teams based in London and Munich, whom we look forward to seeing at our Earlybird Venture Capital offsite next month. But for now, thanks for a meaningful & tasty gathering.
