I just spoke to a founder. 0 investor meetings booked.
He asked for advice. Then told me it was wrong.

• He’s been fundraising for months.
• Focused on LinkedIn DMs and cold emails.
• Very little success getting meetings.
  
I told him:

• It’s good that you’re doing outreach.
• But spamming investors isn’t fundraising.
• If you don’t have a real network, nothing converts.
• Build context and credibility first, then reach out.

(Basic stuff. You’ve seen 1000s of posts on it.)

He told me (and I quote):

“Yeah, warm intros help, but at my stage I just need more volume. I don’t have time to build a network.”

Now, no one has to take my advice.

I failed my first 2 startups.

By 2016 I had nothing to show for my work. 

Two failed startups. 
Two failed raises. 

But I realised one thing. 

Whilst they didn't succeed. 

I learnt a LOT.

You're not gonna fail to raise because of your "bad pitch". But instead because you couldn't understand pipeline math: 

Fundraising is a funnel.
Investors drop off at every step.

That is normal. Expected. Even for top 1% founders. 

From the data I've done with the 120+ successful rounds... 

I've found, if you want 1 term sheet, you usually need ~35 to 40 first meetings.

(After that the second one comes a lot easier.)

But a typical pipeline looks like this (normalised). 

70+ investor intros. 
40 first meetings.
20 second meetings.
10 deeper dives.
2 IC decisions.
1 term sheet. 

(THIS IS FOR 1 TERM SHEET. THINK ABOUT THAT). 

Now look at how most people “run” a round.

• 1 meeting this week.
• 5 the next week.
• 0 the week after.
• Then nothing for two weeks.
• Then panic.

That drip-feed kills momentum.
It also kills your confidence.
And it makes investors feel no pressure to move.

The great thing about this, is the fix is simnple for you. 

1. You need to plan volume before you launch (100+ intros)
2. You build a weekly cadence that forces meetings into the funnel.
3. You tell a narrative that increases the 1st to 2nd meeting conversion. 

This is the only way you can get the volume of meetings you need to raise. 

Do the math first.
Understand what it takes to get even 1 term sheet. 

Because otherwise you won't build the process that actually gets enough investors through the funnel to a term sheet.

P.S. Those investor intros? That's from warm btw... if you wanna spam investors on linkedin dms or cold emails, look at more than 100x that number!

Can we stop with the bootstrap vs VC-backed debate on here please? 

It’s become the most idiotic comparison on Linkedin right now. 

People here are only doing it to get likes. 

They will take a: 

• Top 1% bootstrapper
• Doing $2M ARR
• With no stress

And act like that proves “VC is useless.” 

Then they’ll take a: 

• VC-backed company
• That raised $10M
• Spent all the money and failed

Then act like that proves “VC ruins businesses.” 

So you take someone 99% of bootstrappers will never get to (you are extremely lucky/good if you reach $1M ARR). 

Then use a FAILED company as an example? 

That’s not analysis, buddy. That’s cherry-picking. 

You’re comparing apples to oranges. 

If you actually used the top 1% for each then you couldn't make your posts because it would show VC-backed founders making $$$ 😂

And btw, I'm not even pro either of them. 

Bootstrapping is a strategy. VC is a strategy. 

Neither one guarantees success. 

What matters is 2 things: 

1. Whether your company actually fits the model 
2. WHAT YOU WANT AS A FOUNDER! 

Bootstrapping works when you can grow profitably without burning cash, your market doesn’t require land-grab speed, and distribution isn’t insanely competitive. 

VC works when speed matters, the market is winner-takes-most, the upside is massive, and the business needs capital to reach escape velocity. 

Which one you want to take depends on yourself. 

Not some cherry-picked data someone used here to get some more dopmaine from Linkedin. 

The only real question is: what game are you playing?

Just seen a guy on here who was messaging me 2 years ago failing his raise, now creating a company to help founders raise money... 

All his posts sound very similar to what I've been saying for 3+ years and all of the information and resources I sent him too. 

He was literally complaining to me about how he couldn't raise and all the problems he was having. 

I've literally sent him about 3-5 resources on everything when he asked. 

My whole system on what to do... 
How to master investor calls... 
How to build a network... 

He didn't even implement them properly (or get my direct help to) as he couldn't even raise himself. 

Just took some free resources and now decided to create a business out of something he sucked at. 

To be honest, I just feel bad for his clients that he couldn't even raise for his own round, but is now trying to help them. 

What's gonna happen for them when they get stuff that he doesn't even know what to do with and just copied from someone else? 

I know (and he probs knows) that he can't just copy his way out of it either. 

What would you do in this situation?

Too many founders overcomplicate fundraising. 

• Trying to use AI to spam investors via cold emails
• Tinkering with their pitch deck 100s of times 
• Thinking they need perfect traction

Truth is they only need:

• 20+ people who can give them warm intros 
• A system to practice how they talk 
• A step-by-step process to run their fundraise 
  
Investors don't want you to spam them via cold email. 

They just wanna see that you are the best founder they've met this month. 

You are 1 of 1. 

Don’t let your overcomplication turn into procrastination.

You think of fundraising as this "dirty" activity.  

And that’s exactly why it keeps not working.

You treat it like this thing you have to do every 2 years. 

Instead of something you are actively preparing for. 

It was exactly the same for me... 

I put off fundraise till the very end then had to shut down two businesses because of it. 

Being able to fundraise successfully is all about the preparation you do. 

Whether its: 

1. Building a network before you need meetings 
2. Creating a narrative that builds conviction
3. Running a process that gets term sheets 

None of that happens randomly.  

These take time to implement and practice. 

But when fundraising is treated as an “extra” to the business,  it’s always the first thing pushed back.

There's always a reason: 

→ Shipping product
→ Closing a pilot 
→ Making a hire

And ofc these are all important. 

But if you delay the raise long enough, then none of these even matter. 

Because without capital you'll have to stop. 

Just like I did 2x. 

If you truly want to build a massive business then fundraising is a CORE part of your business. 

It's what allows you to scale as fast as you need. 
To dominate your market. 
To WIN. 

So stop treating fundraising like something shameful. 

And start preparing 𝟯–𝟲 𝗺𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗵𝘀 𝗯𝗲𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗲 you think you need to.
