What would you say to this?

"Based on your headline, I'm intrigued about what you do -- but, to be up-front, I am looking for support that's performance-based. That is, I pay based on new revenue that's generated. That way we are both invested and motivated. I've got some great content, tons of thoughts, and a killer system. 

Do you think it might be worth chatting, with all the above in mind?"

This is a message I received last week.

At first I was a little bemused.

I mean really?

You want help but you're not prepared to invest in yourself.

Never in my life have I or would I reach out to someone saying "I think you can help me but I'm not prepared to take any risk."

And then the obvious struck me.

"They've been burnt badly in the past."

I have too.

This is why I'm highly unlikely to pay any big sum up front for a service again.

And is exactly why weekly pricing works so well.

And is also why I have no contracts in place.

Some would say this was leaving myself wide open.

Others would say it's genius.
(I learnt this from my mentor. In my mind he is a genius. And yes, I did invest heavily in him.)

Personally, my experience of performance-based payments hasn't been great.

The 3 times I've had this agreement, the clients simply didn't put in the work on their end.

They missed sessions.

They didn't take the actions required.

And despite getting results, they were far from what they could have been.

Why?

Because they didn't go all in.

They were half-arsed.

And if there's one thing I'm not in business for, it's that.

Here's what performance-based really means:

"I want guaranteed results with zero skin in the game."
"I want you to carry all the risk while I do the bare minimum."
"I want to blame you when I don't follow through."

It's not about being invested and motivated.

It's about avoiding accountability.

When someone has no financial commitment, they have no emotional commitment.

They'll skip calls because "it's not costing them anything."
They'll ignore your advice because "what's the worst that could happen?"
They'll half-arse the implementation because "I'm not paying for it anyway."

The clients who invest properly?

They show up.
They do the work.
They get results.

Because they've got skin in the game.

I go all in with my clients.

But I'm not going to hold them to ransom.

It has to be beneficial to both parties or it's never going to work.

Messages like these are BIG warning signs that don't sit well with me.

They scream "difficult client who won't take responsibility."

And life's too short for that nonsense.

This was what one of the guys in BoundlessOS said this week on a call.

And is why she chose to go it alone and start her own business.

So she didn't have to put up with corporate politics and the mind games that came with it.

It's situations like this that hinder so many highly experienced and valuable consultants and founders from showing up in full and sharing their voice online.

Because it brings back all the feelings of old.

And when you finally do, you get noticed.

You polarise.

And it can leave you feeling exposed to criticism and judgement again.

But here's what I told her...

Another "virtual coffee" invitation landed in my DMs today.

That's 3 this month and it's only 4th December.

I used to say yes to nearly every single one.

Because that’s what we’re told, right?
“Just network. Be open. You never know…”

When I started my consulting business, I threw myself into networking.

I'd never seen myself as an introvert until this point in my life.

But I quickly realised that around groups of strangers, I was useless.

I didn't know what to say.

I certainly didn't know how to articulate what I did.

I used to obsess over every metric.

And it definitely doesn’t have to run your life.

It just needs a framework you believe in.
One that doesn’t rely on luck.
One that aligns with how you actually want to show up.
One that’s built from your genius, not a noisy stranger’s template.
