“Our activity is not unduly complex or out of reach of the team, but the volume is overwhelming.”

I remember saying this as a senior leader – and realising I was on the verge of burning out a very capable team.

Nothing was “too hard”.

The problem was how work hit them: constant demand, duplicated requests, blocked processes, everything “urgent”.

My first move was the usual: push harder, reprioritise, rally the troops.
It helped briefly. Then the same problems came back.

What finally changed things was stepping back to look upstream:

- Where is demand being created unnecessarily?

- Where does work bounce around or get stuck?

- What assumptions am I making about “this is just how it is”?

Psychology calls this confirmation bias – proving our old view right instead of imagining a better system.

The better move is not to squeeze more out of a capable team, but to create the space to challenge the assumptions you’re unconsciously confirming. 
Looking at demand upstream, not just productivity downstream.

Bringing in different perspectives lets us see the problem from different angles.

So instead, I worked with 'Imagine'

- Imagine if we could drive up satisfaction with our services, what would it take?
- Imagine if we could deal with the root cause of the problem, what would that look like?

Because, by borrowing the phrase of one of my coaching clients, 'the art of the possible' is where creativity starts, and frustration and tensions dissipate.

We all have invisible obstacles in our minds. We cling to approaches that worked in the past, even when they’re no longer right for the present. 

That’s our brain on confirmation bias: proving ourselves right instead of asking, “What else might be possible?

You’d be forgiven for thinking that with a surname pronounced ‘Cool’ and a career helping launch the smartphone revolution, I’d be a die-hard advocate for all things tech. Before my shift to mental health, I had a ringside seat when wireless information devices became smartphones and again when Skype disrupted global telecommunications.

But here’s the thing: true progress isn’t just about technology - it’s about people. Without mental health, there is no true physical health. And yet, the conversations that matter most, about well-being, resilience, and life’s unseen struggles - are often the ones we avoid, irrespective of gender. 

That’s where I come in.

As CEO & Founder of OTII®, I lean into the topics others shy away from, helping organisations, educational institutions, and individuals tackle the root causes of poor well-being across ALL stages of life. Mental health isn’t a perk or a box-ticking exercise; it’s the foundation for everything.

At OTII, we go beyond surface-level solutions. We measure well-being, expose psychosocial risks and take action - along the way breaking taboos around topics such as menopause, men’s mental health, suicide and even death while helping workplaces and schools build healthier, more human-centred environments.

Some conversations, though, don’t belong in a workshop or a boardroom. That’s why I also offer OTII for ONE, a quiet, judgement-free space for individuals who simply need to talk, with no pressure to perform, fix, or label what they’re feeling.

This work is personal to me. Losing a parent to schizophrenia as a young child and facing my own struggles with depression and PTSD shaped the lens for how I see well-being. Mental health chose me, not the other way around.

As we shift from the information age to the age of AI, I’m making sure we don’t leave anything, or anyone, behind. Like well-being. Connection. Basically, our humanity.

Halfway through Season 1, and for someone who hates the sound of their own voice, I’ve learned that leaning into discomfort beats staying silent every time.

Silence can be heavy, but honesty, even shaky honesty, lightens it. Men will talk when they feel safe, not judged. And that a good story doesn’t need a script, just a bit of trust.

Six weeks since The Hushed® landed and I’m still humbled by the response. At the time of writing, there are 25 five-star reviews across Apple & Spotify.

The podcast is now being listened to across five continents, from Australia to Norway to Uruguay - proof that honest stories travel further than we think.

Along the way, a few small facts have stood out:

- Episode 2 has (unofficially) earned the title of “most tear-provoking.”
- The first five episodes features twelve voices from seven nationalities.
- Nearly 40% of the audience to date are female.

This isn’t about numbers or charts. It’s about something quieter - men having space to speak openly, and the people in their lives having space to listen.

A huge thank you to the guests who’ve spoken so openly and honestly, it takes real courage to share stories like these.

Unashamedly a podcast for men, by men, and for those who love them, it’s not a polished debate; it’s human, messy, and real. The kind of conversation that reminds us silence isn’t strength, and that being heard can change everything.
