 1. Debrief after every mess. That’s how you grow.
 2. You’re not paid to suffer. You’re paid to deliver.
 3. Alignment doesn’t stick. Re-align constantly.
 4. Be curious, not defensive, when challenged.
 5. The loudest voice isn’t always the smartest.

My boss told me I'll never make it unless I changed my personality. 
 
So I had this new boss. 
He flew in from out of town to meet me for the first time. 

In our first meeting, we synced up
I told him my plan. 
 
He listened and then, almost casually said:
 
"𝙄𝙛 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙬𝙖𝙣𝙩 𝙩𝙤 𝙡𝙚𝙖𝙙 𝙖𝙩 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙧𝙚𝙜𝙞𝙤𝙣𝙖𝙡 𝙡𝙚𝙫𝙚𝙡... 𝙮𝙤𝙪'𝙙 𝙝𝙖𝙫𝙚 𝙩𝙤 𝙘𝙝𝙖𝙣𝙜𝙚 𝙮𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝙥𝙚𝙧𝙨𝙤𝙣𝙖𝙡𝙞𝙩𝙮."
 
I didn't explode. I just sat with it.
Because here's the thing, it wasn't the first time.
 
I can come across as quiet, calm and reserved. Especially the first time you meet me. 
 
And for as long as I can remember,
People have seen that as a weakness.
 
It goes all the way back to childhood, honestly.
I was the sensitive and shy kid.
 
People sensed that and used it.
Then, you feel small, weak...not in control. 
 
That feeling came roaring back with my new boss. 
 
But I didn't change my personality.
Instead, I got to work. 

Understood expectations. 
Understood what success looked like. 
Made a plan and then delivered. 

I exceeded his expectations
 
Raised the regions profits by 60%, revenue by 75%.
I even took over his job after he left.
And he became a mentor. 
 
Honestly, the old label still stings sometimes 
But I've realized that:

It’s okay to be quiet.
It’s okay to be loud.
 
What's not okay is thinking one is less than the other.
 
So don’t change your personality for anyone.  
Instead, be so good they can’t ignore you.

Every PM feels the pressure.

The pressure of accountability

My client reached out to me looking for her next role. 

Her current role wasn’t fulfilling. 
She was restless and she needed something else badly. 

So she started looking. 
But she wasn’t having any luck. 

Her main issue was positioning herself properly on paper and in interviews. 

She had imposter syndrome. 

And this affected how she saw herself and talked about herself. 

When explaining her experience, she would default to low level tasks…

Talk very tactically as opposed to mixing in the strategic. 

She wasn’t speaking the language of leadership. 
She wasn’t resonating with decision makers. 

So we went to work. 


We revamped her resume. 

We articulated how her projects impacted the organization. 


We worked on her interviewing. 

Her opening statement was long and rambly.
We fixed that. 

In 2 mins, she could articulate her story and why you’d be a fool not to have her. 


Then came an interview from a reputable org. 

We researched the org. 
We researched the decision maker. 

We prepared materials beforehand laying out why she was the must-have candidate. 

She went in and did the interview.

They were so impressed with her, 
They gave her a role at the next level. 

She went from being an individual contributor to heading a PMO.

Now she will be hiring people at the level she was just at. 

Incredible. 

If you have an inkling that you can perform at the next level,

Find someone that will believe in you 
Find someone that knows how to get there. 

Your mind is very powerful, 
But it can work against you.

Find someone that will be in your corner until the end.

→ Boil down the JD to the top 3 pain points.
→ Identify 1 skill that addresses each pain point.
→ Find concrete examples on how you’ve used this skill to address each pain point.

This is your 2-min spiel of why you’re the ideal candidate for the role.

Use this to position yourself.
Use this to introduce yourself.
Use this to resonate with the interviewer.

We love people that can solve our problems.

Show the interviewer you get them.

You don’t need to be the most qualified to land a role. 

What you need is:

To demonstrate that you’ll be the BEST investment.

A company with a job opening has a problem and 100-500K to make that problem go away.

So you need to answer these 2 questions beyond reasonable doubt. 

1. Will you stick around?
-Show you’re dedicated to them.
-Show you’re enthusiastic about the company.
-Prove this with the depth of your research.
-Prove this with the networking you’ve done in the company.
-Be an insider.

2. Will you deliver?
-Show you understand the main pain points. 
-Show you have what it takes to address these. 
-Back it up with data. 
-Where you have gaps, show how you're closing the gap now and how you’ve closed gaps in the past.
-Show that you’ll make HR and your boss look good.

Answer these 2 questions throughout the hiring process.
-In your resume
-In your correspondences
-In your presentations
-In your interviews

Show that you’ll be the best investment they’ll make.

And it will be a mistake to spend those dollars elsewhere.
