Yesterday in therapy, I admitted something I’ve been hiding for 28 years.

In 1997, when I was a freshman at USC, I did what a lot of freshmen do: I pledged a fraternity.

Two months into the semester, I got “dinged” — kicked out before initiation.

For almost three decades, I’ve told a different story:

 “I left the fraternity to take an internship at a sports agency. Always kind of regretted leaving…”.

That wasn’t true.

I didn’t leave.
I was asked to leave.
I don’t think my mom even knows that.

On paper, it’s a small moment in a long life. 

But for an 18-year-old who had lost his dad at 11, who was craving belonging and male connection, it was a setback.

Worse, there was no explanation. No feedback. No “here’s why.”

Just a brief conversation on a beer-stained floor where an older brother (dude name Blair, from Solana Beach) told me I didn’t belong.

So I filled in the gaps myself:

Maybe I was too chubby
Not attractive enough
Bad at drinking
Too awkward

Whatever the reason, the conclusion I absorbed was:

“You don’t fit in. And that’s your fault.”

For 28 years, I’ve chased belonging in different forms — companies, groups, labels, titles, achievements. 

I’ve also found myself in places where, again, I just didn’t fit: big PE firms, large public media companies, YPO, certain rooms where I felt a little “off.”

Yesterday, finally saying this out loud, I arrived at a different conclusion:

It’s okay not to fit.

“Fit” is not a moral judgment. It doesn’t mean you’re broken. 

It just means that environment, that group, that culture wasn’t built for you — and maybe you weren’t built for it.

The strange irony is that, as an entrepreneur, I’ve had to make these same “fit” calls about employees, vendors, even customers (not to mention ex-girlfriends). 

I’ve told people, “This just isn’t the right fit” — without always appreciating how loaded that phrase can feel on the other side.

I’m 46 years old and just now using a LinkedIn post to say:

I got dinged.
I felt ashamed.
I lied about it for years.
And I’m finally okay with not fitting in.

If this resonates with you: you’re not alone, and you’re not broken.

Sometimes, it’s just the wrong room.

One of the big myths American entrepreneurs love to repeat:

“Saudi Arabia (and the Gulf) are overflowing with capital just waiting to be invested in U.S. startups.”

Reality is almost the opposite.

The serious money in Saudi — whether it’s private investors or sovereign wealth vehicles like the PIF — is overwhelmingly focused on Saudi Arabia itself.

It’s not a giant ATM for the rest of the world. 
It’s fuel for a national transformation.

The mandate is clear:
- Build infrastructure.
- Create jobs.
- Support a young, fast-growing population.
- Enable a real middle class and family formation inside the Kingdom.

That means capital going into housing, logistics, tourism, entertainment, healthcare, education, advanced manufacturing — all the pipes and platforms a modern economy needs.

So if you’re an American founder dreaming of “Saudi money,” here’s the mindset shift:

Don’t think, “How do I get Saudi capital to fund my idea back home?”

Think, “How can my company bring capabilities into Saudi — technology, know-how, jobs, training — and help build what they’re trying to build?”

Saudi Arabia isn’t just a pool of capital. 

It’s a country in the middle of a massive buildout. When I was there it made me imagine what it was like in America in the early 1900s. 

If you stop treating it like a checkbook and start treating it like a partner, the conversation changes very quickly.

I was convinced as a 20-year-old in the big leagues that I would still be playing today.

I saw my dad, a business owner for 20 years, get pennies on the dollar for his business due to subpar advice/planning.

I met my wife in high school and we have four kids together, they are everything to me.

I had a bottom 20% career outcome (top 10 MLB picks are supposed to make All-Star teams, I didn't). I had a top 5% financial outcome (I made smart money decisions with every dollar I earned).

I have always loved talking about personal finance but have not always been a big fan of "financial advisors". (So I figured I would become one, smart right)

I want to change an industry (financial services) so it is more focused on educating clients than telling clients.

Here is a story (and the reason) why athletes need a "no man"....

Let me give you a look inside a pro athlete. 

You are a walking confidence barometer.
You are so confident you "know" your career will never end.
You are wanting to help everyone who got you to this place.

The recent revelation from Jameis Winston nails this. 

*#1 pick 
*Family is important to him
*Feels like the money will never stop

Then you realize how unsustainable that path is...

I mean, think about it...

No athlete got to the top without a laundry list of people ~ family, friends, coaches. 

Now consider you make all this money ~ they are still living the same lifestyle. 

You want to help + You think your career (and the money) will never end. 

It is a dangerous game. 

The quick solve ~ Hire a "No Man". 

The person on your financial team who everything runs through. 

*The investment 
*The new  purchase
*The year-end family gift idea.

You keep the relationship.
Your "no man" (me in many cases) has the real conversion. 

This is either part of the plan or not. 

Let them be the bad guy. 

*You still make smart money moves. 
*You still keep all the important relationships. 

It is easy for someone outside of sports to say "that athlete was not smart with his money". 

Yet put yourself in their shoes and ask how many people you would want to help?

Not so easy now...

So my athletes out there, remember you can (and should) defer those money conversations to your team.

You bought Bitcoin 3 months ago (and are down 20%).

Here is a move to consider to save in taxes:

For stocks if you sell them and capture the loss you must wait 30 before rebuying that same position.

Example: 

Buy Apple stock it goes down.
Sell to capture the loss.
Must wait 30 days to rebuy.

If not that “loss” you generated is not able to be used. 

Bitcoin (and crypto) does not have those same restrictions. 

Example:

Buy Bitcoin it goes down 
Sell to capture the loss 
Immediately rebuy 

You still get to capture and use that loss you locked in. 

The fancy term is it avoids a wash sale.

The thing that matters for you is if you bought at the peak now is the time to consider the moves to make to save on your tax bill.

Take the risk, shoot your shot, ask the girl. 

Today is my 12th anniversary.

Marrying my wife is the single best decision I have ever made. 

Proposing in front of her sorority at Baylor (see video) ~ Didn’t totally think that one through. 

Thankful she said yes in front a room of screaming girls.

Most athletes should not buy a house (where they play).

Let me explain…

Homeownership is the American Dream, right?

Yeah, not so much when you look at all the numbers.

The starting point for me in conversations with anyone around homeownership revolves around one question:

“How long do you plan on being there?”

If it is less than 5 years (arbitrary number but a good starting point), we should probably reconsider.

Well take the average professional athlete: 

A 5-year deal is almost unheard of.

Far less than 5% of athletes will ever play for the same team in the same city for five years.

This means homeownership comes with the expensive costs of selling.

For context, I moved more than 25 times in my 11-year playing career.

Instead, most athletes should focus on finding a high quality rental.

· Less stress
· Less total cost
· Less headache when moving
· Less things to monitor during the season

….and ultimately usually more money in their pocket.

Look there are always exceptions to every rule (state income taxes I am looking at you) but this is one of the biggest money misconceptions I see from athletes.

You will move far more than you think during your career.

I am building a $3,000,000 tax-free bucket of money. 

I could use it for long-term care or retirement spending.

Here is how I am doing it and what you can learn from it:

First some context: 

*We are living longer
*I hope to live a long time 
*The cost of long-term care is increasing
*I like investing in tax-free buckets of money

My Solution = Use my Health Savings Account (HSA) to do all of this.

The Structure: 

An HSA allows those on a high deductible health care plan to make yearly contributions. 

Those contributions provide a triple tax benefit: 

1) Tax Deduction
2) Tax-Free Growth
3) Tax-Free Distributions (For Qualified Medical Expenses)

Here is how I use mine ⬇️⬇️⬇️

For the past six years, I have contributed the family max ($8,750 in 2026). 

I never use the money; instead, I invest it in the market. 

That money has grown to ~ $88,228. 

Here are the two ways I plan to use it down the road ⬇️⬇️⬇️

Option 1 - I use this money as a self-funded long-term care policy: 

1) Skilled Nursing 
2) Care Assisted Facilities
3) Long Term Medical Needs

Option 2 - I use this money as part of my retirement plan: 

1) Keep Medical Receipts 
2) Pull Out Money Years Down The Road

***I scan big medical receipts and save them in a Dropbox folder (with four kids this adds up fast).

The math behind it: 

*Current Balance = $88,228
*Yearly Contribution = $8,750 (goes up each year)
*Estimated Rate of Return = 8% (invested in equities)
*Years to Compound = 36 (that takes me to the age of 70)

The Lesson: 

An HSA is an incredibly powerful tool. 

It becomes far more powerful if you can:

Cash Flow Medical Expenses + Invest The Contributions.

Play 10 years.
Earn $20,000,000
50% goes to taxes & agent fees
Save 20% of that pre-tax # ($4M)
$6,000,000 spent during your career

You are living a $600,000 a year lifestyle.
Your $4M saved can only support something around $120-$150k per year.

You are richer on paper than ever before (sold your business).

Yet you feel more uncertain ~ let me show you how to solve that:

Here is the reality...

*When you sell your business
*When the big contract comes to an end 

You have more money than ever.

Yet no paychecks means increased uncertainty. 

(Trust me I have been there)

Step 1 ~ Determine the Cost to be You

Without knowing your numbers, it is impossible to plan for this. 

Sure, you can get by, but you will never have the peace of mind you want. 

Figure out what it costs not just to live your life today, but the life you really want to live.

Step 2 ~ Determine your Buckets (see image below)

There are thousands of different investments you can make. 

Yet they all fall into one of three buckets. 

Allocate 3-7 years of spending into bucket 1 (War Chest).

Example: 

*$1,000,000 of spending per year. 
*$3,000,000 to $7,000,000 in your war chest 

This would allow you to have withstood everything from the Dot .com bust to the Great Depression (all while living your same lifestyle).

Step 3 ~ Build Guardrails 

Saying you are going to take a static amount out of your portfolio (think the 4% rule) simply doesn't play in real life. 

You need guardrails that allow you to spend more in good years and tighten your belt in down years. 

It will:

*Ultimately allows you to spend more
*Provide you with the peace of mind you are craving

I talk to them, they have little to show, no wealth created but on the surface everyone thinks they are crushing it. 

This isn’t a knock just for everyone else to realize the reality (what I see in a balance sheet) is far different than what social portrays.

"Elect S Corp status and pay yourself the lowest salary you can."

Here is how business owners can save $100,000+ with proper tax planning...

Take that advice, and often you miss out on one of the best tax planning tools for business owners, Qualified Business Income Deduction (QBID).

QBID applies to: 

·      Pass-Through Entities (Not C Corps)
·      Think Sole Proprietorships, Partnerships, and S Corporations

Standard QBID deduction is: 

·        20% of qualified small business income

Example: Business has Qualified Business Income = $250,000

20% deduction = $50,000 deduction

Yet if your business continues to grow, the IRS has a catch...

For business owners earning more than: 

·       $197,300 (single filer) or $394,600 (married filer)

You get to deduct the lesser of (worse for you):

·        20% of qualified small business income
·        50% of their W2 wages (*significant depreciable real estate can change this)

***The business must NOT be an SSTB (Think service businesses like a
consultant, financial advisor, and legal services)

Example: Your business does $1,000,000 in taxable income to you.

*You paid $150,000 in W2 wages
*You have $850,000 in additional profit

You will be over the wage base for standard QBI so you will have to take the lesser of:

Option 1: 50% deduction of your $150,000 salary = $75,000 deduction

Option 2: 20% deduction of your $850,000 in profits = $170,000 deduction

You will be forced to take option one (the lesser of the two). That costs you nearly $100,000 in tax deductions.

Instead, consider a starting point using the 2/7 rule:

Option 1: 50% deduction of $285,000 salary (2/7 rule) = $142,500 deduction

Option 2: 20% deduction of $715,000 in profits (2/7 rule) = $143,000 deduction

Increasing your salary increases your payroll tax (15.3%) but saves you tens of thousands more in taxes.

So remember, if you are a business owner, generic advice can cost you thousands, and specific advice can save you thousands.

College football coaching buyouts have already topped $169 million this season (per FOS).

Read that again...

***We’re not talking players' NIL or Rev Share money. 
***We’re talking about schools paying people not to coach.

A few things I think about as a former athlete: 

***The best coaches have the best players. 
***The best coaches require significant investments. 

The two above items only happen in college football with donors. 

So, at what point do we see donor fatigue? 

I mean, imagine writing a few million-dollar check to learn it went to paying a buyout (for a guy not to coach). 

I don't know about you, but it feels like we are at a bit of a crossroads with college football.

The two most effective strategies for managing sudden wealth are starting slowly—both with investments and lifestyle—and asking plenty of questions to fully understand your financial picture before making big decisions.

Want to give and save on taxes?

Let’s say you own $100,000 of stock you bought for $40,000.
You sell it, you’ll owe capital gains taxes on the $60,000 gain (~ $12k in taxes).

But if you donate it to a DAF, you:

*Avoid the capital gains tax
*Get a full $100,000 deduction

For MiLB draft picks, setting up your 401K as early as possible is essential. Making your contribution election right away ensures you capture key tax savings and avoid missing financial opportunities that can’t be recovered later.

Tax brackets are misunderstood. Being in the highest bracket doesn’t mean all your income is taxed at that rate—only the portion within that bracket. Understanding how progressive taxes work and knowing your effective tax rate is essential for making informed financial decisions.

Yet your financial moves are completely inside of your control.
