I've said to myself, "I wish I had pretended I was someone else more in that situation" exactly zero times in my life.

The opposite has happened dozens of times.

Some nuance:

1. Ideally, you can have both. Don't think that being liked means you're being inauthentic. Good, authentic people are usually pretty popular. 

2. Don't mistake rudeness or lack of patience for authenticity. Many people think they have high standards, but they're actually just prideful.

But I think we all know what it's like to settle for not being who you are so you can impress people that you barely like.

Avoid it as much as you can.
