When positioning is sharp, marketing writes itself. When marketing works (which should be 80% of your days), sales becomes enrollment, not a pitch.

Buying decisions happen before anyone books a call.


5) When you see a window, throw a brick through it.

In the early 2000s,  my focus was on growing my skills, climbing the ladder, and being where I needed to be to get the job done. 

In 2009, I burned out hard. 

My new plan was to work for equity in tech start-ups and become financially independent.

Swing and Miss, the first start-up company I chose to work for, was going nowhere (equity worth zero). 

What happened? Did I screw up everything?

I chose the company because I was passionate about its mission, but I had not examined it further. I had no real plan.

My next step was to call people that I knew had been successful in working for equity in tech and see what was different in their "playbook."

April 19th, 2012 Splunk had a break-out IPO

April 20th, 2012 feelings of anxiety and fear creep in about how to manage the newly generated wealth. 

I had to figure out how to get real income (real estate) into my portfolio. I needed something sending me checks.

Key lessons learned after the first IPO:
 -How to invest in private equity real estate
 -Set up my family for generational wealth
 -Own the result (don't put my future in someone else's hands)

New Mission: Be the Founder of a Micro Family Office to become Financially Independent.

I climbed the ladder to become a CIO.

You crossed $2M in investable assets.

Your wealth level changed but your wealth mgmt approach didn't.

At $250K, a retail brokerage and a traditional advisor made sense... the tools fit the job.

At $2M+, concentration is the threat. Income is the goal. But a portfolio still sitting 80% in public markets isn't built for either.

Here's what the top 0.1% actually hold:

28% real estate.
28% private equity.
23% public stocks.

This isn't a knowledge problem about which investments to buy.

It's a foundation problem.

Before you can shift your allocation toward income-generating assets at any meaningful scale, three things MUST exist:

𝗜𝗻𝘃𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝘀𝗶𝘀. Private equity deals don't wait. A good operator opens a fund once every few years. The window is short. Without a written document that defines what a yes looks like before the pitch starts, you make decisions under pressure — and expensive mistakes follow.

𝗣𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗳𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗼 𝗔𝗿𝗰𝗵𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲. What percentage goes to each asset class? How much can be illiquid at any given time? Without written allocation targets, you can end up 80% concentrated in a single category without ever making a single bad individual decision.

𝗦𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲. Your assets need legal separation from your personal finances. Without it, a bad outcome in one investment can threaten everything else you own. A properly structured Holding Company creates that wall. But only if the books match the entity. Commingled accounts mean a court can pierce the structure entirely.

It's what you build toward AFTER the foundation exists.

The top 1% don't just build bigger portfolios.

They build fundamentally different ones.

Most people follow the same playbook:

Accumulate. 
Grow the number. 
Withdraw 4% per year and hope it lasts.

That's a drawdown portfolio.

It has one job: don't run out before you die.

But when you study how the top 1% actually manage wealth, the structure looks nothing like this.

They don't measure success by total portfolio value.

They measure it across three asset categories:

𝗜𝗻𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲 → Cash flow that replaces your paycheck
𝗚𝗿𝗼𝘄𝘁𝗵 → Assets that compound over decades
𝗣𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 → Capital that weathers any storm

This is the structure of an 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗴𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗳𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗼.

It generates income 𝘸𝘩𝘪𝘭𝘦 preserving and growing the underlying capital.

This is why the top 1% have 80% of their wealth in assets working for them — not slowly being spent down.

One model depletes your wealth over time.

The other compounds it.

You work for 30 years.

What stands out to you most in this data the Fed released last month?

The Fed tracks the wealth composition of Americans every few years.

Here's what the most recent data shows across the top three tiers.

Investable Net Worth: $842K
Real estate: 59% of portfolio
Business equity: 9% of portfolio

Total Net Worth: $3.8M
Investable Net Worth: $2.0M
Real estate: 59% of portfolio
Business equity: 9% of portfolio

𝗧𝗼𝗽 𝟭%
Total Net Worth: $11.6M
Investable Net Worth: $9.3M
Real estate: 23% of portfolio
Business equity: 41% of portfolio

I found it interesting that the top 10% and top 5% have nearly identical portfolio compositions.

More assets but same composition.

But the top 1% looks different. 
Real estate drops from 59% to 23%. 
Business equity jumps from 9% to 41%. 

And the gap between TNW and INW narrows significantly.

Whether that composition causes the wealth gap, or results from it, the data doesn't say.

But the difference is there.
