I have a PhD in Marketing and spent 25 years working as a marketing professor. I was an Assistant Professor at London Business School and the University of Minnesota, an Associate Professor and then Adjunct Professor at Melbourne Business School, and Visiting Professor at MIT. My MBA teaching won a shit ton of prizes including best teacher at LBS, MIT & MBS. 

I have also worked as a global brand consultant for clients that include Baxter, Loewe, McKinsey, Subaru, Donna Karan, Westpac, Shiseido, Flight Centre, Johnson & Johnson, De Beers, Sephora, Benefit, Amgen, Ericsson, Penfolds, Jurlique, Cloudy Bay and WD40. 

For thirteen years - from 2002 to 2015 - I served as the in-house brand consultant for LVMH - the world's largest luxury group - working in Paris with senior executives from brands like Louis Vuitton, Dom Perignon and Hennessy. 

I’ve been a columnist for 20 years, writing a weekly column for Marketing, then Marketing Week and now AdWeek in the US and The Drum in the UK. On seven occasions I've been voted Columnist of the Year at the PPA Press Awards, the highest award for magazine journalism in the UK. I’ve also been the British Society of Magazine Editors Business Columnist of the Year in 2018, 2022 and 2023. More scholarly articles include the Sloan Management Review, Harvard Business Review, the Journal of Advertising and the Journal of Consumer Research. 

I was a Thouron Scholar and spent 1995 at Wharton. I was a recipient of the Ferber Award in 2000 for my doctoral thesis. My co-authored pricing research was cited by George Akerlof during his Nobel Prize acceptance speech. AdNews rated me one of their “Power 50” and I made SmartCompany's top ten business thinkers list. The AMI gave me the Sir Charles McGrath Award, the highest honour for marketing in Australia. I gave the 30th Anniversary Levitt Group lecture for the Chartered Institute of Marketing in 2019 and the Ogilvy lecture for the Marketing Society a year later. In the 2024 honours list I was a made an Honorary Fellow of the IPA. 

These days I focus on my Mini MBA courses. I live in Tasmania with 3 Tasmanians plus many idiot rescue dogs. I have a boat that I never use. And a gym that I use even less. But I do find time to drink wine, usually in my underpants, until very early in the morning marvelling at the absurdity of it all.

* Nurturing cross-team relationships, allowing us to secure earlier consideration in creative planning from in-house agency partners and program visibility in-pack with a program, feature page in all adult product instruction booklets.

As Group Sales & Marketing Director I worked alongside the Managing Directors of each business in the group with the responsibility for planning and implementing distinctive brand and value propositions, developing and overseeing the new business strategies, and overseeing all group marketing plans and operations.

Key achievements include:
* Rationalising inter-group finances to identify where to make efficiencies and where to invest for growth across the business units.
* Defining a new group business structure, leading to Managing Director appointments for each business in the group and hiring dedicated Business Development resources for individual companies.
* Developing and implementing new marketing and sales strategies for NDL and Promotigo, creating a distinctive proposition and set of assets for both and personally implemented a new marketing tech stack.
* Pitched and won campaigns and managed relationships with brands including Brooks, The Edrington Group, Bose and Coca-Cola with Global Media.

In June 2020 as the Covid pandemic looked to be easing, pubs and restaurants had the opportunity to reopen but only under very specific controls. The Promotigo team evolved the platform to create an end‐to‐end SaaS journey for venues and visitors to meet government requirements. Outlets could register themselves and create their own unique QR code identity so guests could safely and efficiently register themselves via their phones. As the system was virtually self managed it allowed staff to focus on reopening their doors without the risk of hefty fines or complex procedures. It was so successful it was later adopted by the government with the launch of their tracking app in October 2020.

I lead on brand and marketing for this rapid spin-up, assisted directly with sales and developed the go to market proposition.

 • I helped agencies such as Halo Promo Risk and Toyas O'Mara understand their market and category set, define target segments, implementing both marketing content calendars and lead gen management through Hub Spot CRM.
 • I worked with niche brands such as Hackney GT to create and optimise digital marketing programs to drive brand awareness, consideration and ultimately sales.

Following the successful acquisition of my own company Egovision by Brandmovers, the US-based global leader in digital promotions, I was appointed MD for UK/EMEA and was responsible for the launch of Brandmovers Europe in 2008, with a focus on business development and the strategic delivery of objectives, focusing on the securing of new deals in the UK and Europe. 

Reporting directly to the CEO, with a local team including Technical Director, Developers, Creatives, Client Services, Business Development Managers, with P&L ownership, I succeeded in doubling turnover during this period, attained YoY growth of 34% (at peak) and a record turnover in 2018. 

 • Shaped the strategic vision for the UK and educated marketplace on the use of digital for promotional campaigns, moulded the value proposition from the creative, technical and commercial standpoints to drive success. 
• Pitched and won contracts with Peppa Pig World, LG Electronics, Deutsche bank and CinemaNX. Supported US office on Hasbro’s Nerf Perks loyalty program, executed an end-to-end digital transformation for celebrity picture agency FameFlynet.
• Successfully drove the pitch to Manchester United Football Club and delivered a Global ECRM Acquisition Campaign, with the concept of ‘United in History’, an email driven reward scheme to entice new followers.
• Succeeded in doubling turnover during this period, attained YoY growth of 34% (at peak).

Excited to share that the Human Hatstand Ltd offices have been short-listed for Best Place to Work 2026!

It’s in between my living room and bedroom, and though it doubles as my kids’ bedroom it’s not far from the kitchen where I can knock up a nice brew. There’s a Bluetooth speaker in the bathroom so I can listen to podcasts on the throne and quite often a vibrant display of colourful washing hanging on the drier.

It also has a wonderful view. Of the bins.

There's a lot of nonsense talked on here about marketing, and never more than the age old argument about the difference between Branding and Marketing.

So to settle the debate once and for all, I have carefully read, dissected and evaluated every meme, post, article and graphic to finally put this to bed.

After many months consideration, I am delighted to be able to now present my definitive real difference between branding and marketing.
