I can confidently say that over half of the 'agency' job adverts on LinkedIn are fake - and that's being conservative.

In 'bearish markets', there's quite a lot of 'fake recruiting' among the larger 'target-obsessed' agencies - the goal will be to lock in a 'rockstar candidate' and send his/her undoxxed profile to hiring companies.

For jobseekers, it can often be a good idea to ask the recruiter 'the name of the person they are sending candidates to at the hiring company' - it keeps a level of accountability. You can always verify later 😉.

AI video interviewers are on the rise - and jobseekers hate them.

Over the past year, I've spoken to several jobseekers about their experience interviewing with AI avatars.

Unsurprisingly, the responses have been overwhelmingly negative.

One jobseeker said 'if AI is being used to hire me, they will use AI to fire me too!'

It may save internal recruiters time, but is it worth jeopardising your employer brand and losing out on potentially amazing candidates?! 

Approx. 1 in 3 drop out when they discover it's an 'AI interview'.

Some may argue that speaking to a LLM at an early stage is better than speaking to a talent acquisition professional with little/no technical knowledge. Fair, but remember an AI interviewer is only designed to collect information, not give it back. It won't discuss culture, policies, day-to-day etc.  

Some may argue that AI interviews help removes biases from a process - that's nonsense. Saying AI is unbiased, is like saying the internet is unbiased. This level playing field argument is something 'AI interview' proponents are pushing hard, but such an argument is fundamentally flawed.

The only positive with AI interviews, in my opinion, is the flexibility it offers. There's no set time to do the interview - candidates can do the AI interview at 4am or 4PM. 

Despite that, I'm not sure if this is the way forward. It's certainly not conducive of a friendly work environment and it certainly tilts the power dynamic more towards the employer. 

In many respects, the story is still being written.

Given the sheer amount of cheating on the candidate side too (e.g. Cluely), you can be sure that surveillance tools will be used a lot more in interviews too e.g. tracking eye movements, browser monitoring, speech patterns etc.

LinkedIn reminds us yet again how little it cares about user safety.

Not only is it littered with fake recruiters, job scams etc. but now the 'Blocking' function doesn't work.

In other words, people you once blocked are now visible to you.

Instead just give your email and city. 

The crypto world can be murky at times

And applying for jobs is no different 

Sometimes your resume can end up anywhere 

Therefore, I always urge candidates to avoid putting phone numbers or home addresses on their resume.

Best case scenario, you'll have 'target obsessed' recruiters ringing you morning, noon and night.

Worst case scenario, you're kidnapped and held for ransom..... okay, maybe  a bit extreme, but it can happen 

Why am I posting this?

Well, last week, a dev messaged me - we connected at an event last year. A young guy with a big logo behind him. 

He wasn't a LinkedIn guy, his account is more or less inactive with little/no info and only a few connections. 

Anyways, he pinged me on TG. He wanted to chat. 

Okay, I agreed. On the call, he told me straight up - he never worked with recruiters. He didn't trust us. 

He said he applied to 4 companies directly last week. He said it was the first time he ever applied for jobs, 

The following day, an agency rang him up unannounced pitching other roles with other projects. 

He remains convinced that his details were passed on without his consent.  He was fuming.

Whether true or not, it's fair to say that sometimes your resume can easily slip into the wrong hands.

All permanent placements
• 10% of each hire’s agreed annual base salary

All fixed-term placements greater than 1 year in duration
• 10% of each hire’s agreed annual base salary

All fixed-term placements less than 1 year in duration
• 20% of each hire's total base salary 

We will never charge a candidate a fee for our services.

How much salary would you sacrifice for remote work?
10%, 20%, 30%, more maybe?

Today's job market is undoubtedly challenging and with that, fully remote work is becoming more and more of a luxury.

Recently, I spoke to Aaron Stanley on Brazil Crypto Report (l1nk in comm3nts). There, I recalled a fascinating conversation, I had with a woman based in London, earning £120k in an office based role.

She spoke of things like not having to take a day‘s holidays for a parent-teacher meeting and doing any overtime required after the kid’s went to bed instead of in the afternoon with fond nostalgia - and she wanted that life back. 

To my surprise, she advised that she’d be willing to consider anything above £80k for the right opportunity provided it was fully remote. 

In other words, she was prepared to put a £40k valuation on remote work.

A considerable amount.

Generally speaking, people feel more productive and happier working remotely. 

And prepared to work for less

While onsite can have some advantages, I'm a huge advocate for remote-work.

For me, it's a not a question of whether it works or not, it's more a question of how to make it work. It's a leadership issue - pure and simple. 

Work models fail, not because of where employees work, but of how companies lead. Think of most of the big success stories in crypto e.g. Coinbase, Chainlink Labs - most started remote-first and continued to scale globally. 

Not only does onsite restrict your talent pool, but research strongly points to increased burnout, resentment towards leadership etc. With that, remote work is generally equals greater job satisfaction, increased trust across business functions and more focus on outcomes, rather than 'hours worked'. 

Visibility is no indicator of performance and advancements in AI will further highlight this in the coming years. 

Similarly, many will argue that onsite work is pivotal for 'early career' professionals and on that point, I somewhat agree however it's not an absolute necessity. What's far more important is active coaching, structured onboardings, consistent feedback, clear expectations etc.

One thing that I've often find gets completely overlooked too is how inclusive remote work is and it's something that should be highlighted more. It's a blessing for people with young families, disabilities, caregiver responsibilities etc.

One thing that gave me exceptional satisfaction working in web3 was the borderless, meritocratic nature of the industry. 

Our industry once championed remote work. We once looked beyond one's nationality when evaluating candidates. Proof of Skill took precedence over Proof of Place.


 Sadly, that ethos is dying with each passing day.
