Mercedes-Benz announced luxury robotaxis 

Here‘s what you need to know:

1️⃣ L4 Robotaxi on the next-gen S-Class

Mercedes will launch L4 automated driving on a mass-produced luxury platform. Commercial rollout in Abu Dhabi starts 2026.

2️⃣ A three-way partnership

Lumo provides local operations. Momenta delivers the L4 stack. Mercedes integrates it all via MB.OS.

3️⃣ UAE positioning itself as a global AV testbed

Clear regulation, fast execution, and national commitment. Lumo is mandated to operate autonomous vehicles and is building a premium mobility ecosystem.

My thoughts:

Mercedes entering the robotaxi race through a Chinese AV stack and a Middle Eastern operator says a lot about how the market is shifting. 

German OEMs face rising cost pressure, slower regulation at home, and shrinking margins. 

Partnering with a Chinese software provider seems no longer optional and more like a prerequisite to stay competitive.

At the same time, the UAE is becoming one of the most attractive markets for advanced AV deployments. 

Clear rules, political alignment, and fast decision-making.

What stands out here is the positioning. 

A luxury robotaxi built on an S-Class is a sharp contrast to the price-driven strategies of other players

In the UAE this has real appeal. 

The market can support premium mobility, and a high-end robotaxi experience is a form of differentiation that fits local expectations.

There is space for this segment, and Mercedes can lean into brand strength rather than fight on cost.

Outside the Gulf, the picture changes. 

High hardware costs could limit this model to niche deployments. 

Competitors with lower-cost vehicles will be able to offer cheaper per-mile fees, which matters in most markets where robotaxi economics remain tight.

This partnership fits a broader trend we’ve discussed before.

China exports the stack. 

The Middle East provides the operational sandbox. 

But I personally think it is great to see a German company entering the global robotaxi field. 

The open question is how far Mercedes pushes this premium positioning.

Waymo is in talks to raise $15B+ at a valuation near $100B

Here's what you need to know:

1️⃣ Valuation update, still not final

Waymo was valued at ~$45B in October 2024. Now discussions range up to $110B. That is more than a 2x step-up in slightly over a year. But Terms, size, and final valuation are not yet set.

2️⃣ Real revenue

According to two sources, Waymo has crossed an annual revenue run rate above $350M. This is not disclosed publicly and Waymo declined to comment.

3️⃣ Alphabet still leading, but sharing the load

The round is expected to be led by Alphabet, with outside investors joining. Sources frame this as Alphabet keeping control while reducing direct exposure to the capital intensity of autonomy.

My thoughts:

This round should be read as a bet on Waymo’s ability to scale execution, not just its technology.

Over the last months, Waymo has shown that it can enter new US markets faster and with less friction than before. 

The time between city announcement, driverless testing, and paid operations is compressing. 

That matters because it shortens time to revenue and improves capital efficiency in a business that is inherently asset-heavy.

The $350M revenue run rate is still small relative to a $100B valuation, but it signals something more important. 

Waymo has crossed the threshold from proof of autonomy to proof of operations. 

Fully driverless rides are no longer a special case. 

They are becoming a repeatable rollout.

This does not mean scaling is solved. 

Fleet manufacturing, local regulations, and international expansion remain hard constraints. 

That said, private investors are not paying for today’s revenue. 

They are paying for the evidence that Waymo’s rollout engine is improving. 

If that trend continues, revenue growth can accelerate non-linearly as each new city comes online faster than the last.

Alphabet bringing in outside capital reinforces this logic. 

It keeps pressure on Waymo to turn execution speed into economics, while preserving upside if autonomy becomes infrastructure.

The valuation assumes success. 

But unlike earlier AV hype cycles, the success being priced in is no longer hypothetical. 

It is operational, measurable, and increasingly repeatable.
