When I don't work on our core research product I optimize landing pages, test lead generation strategies through case studies and run global research projects for our Fortune 500 clients.

I used to think Thanksgiving was overrated. As I get older, I realize how special it is. 


Growing up, it was just normal. The week of Thanksgiving meant deer hunting 🦌 -- visiting grandma -- and eating a LOT of food.

It wasn't until my first Thanksgiving in NYC that I realized how special it was. 

The first year I didn't go home for Thanksgiving, I did spend with my girlfriend (now wife) Lynn Nakimera-Mahner. We didn't do a whole lot. I think we went out to dinner with her family. 

But being Ugandan-American, Thanksgiving was never really as big of a deal to them. 

Despite being with the woman I love, that year was really sad as far as Thanksgiving goes. 

I just remember the streets of NYC, quiet after the parade. Because everyone was either with family or had flown home to be with them. 

The experience of being there with my parents and siblings, around the great big dining table, some drama in the air, it was, and is, irreplaceable. 

This year, I have so much to be grateful for, but I'll highlight a few things. 

- My faith: I am especially grateful for my faith this year, because through all the trials and challenges of running a business, while growing a family, God has always had my back. Without my faith I would feel very lost. 

- My family: My wonderful wife, Lynn, has shown me what it means to be graceful, patient, and to have true perseverance. Mainly bc she has to put up with me. Seriously tho, I can be a real pain in the ass at times. And there is Kitahara, recently turned one. She brings so much joy and wonder into our lives. Nothing really makes me slow down like seeing her want to play with me. 

- My friends: I have a lot of friends who have made this year special in some way or another. I won't share why for each, but the following people have all had a very special impact on me this year. Sam Parr, Cristian Mendez, Oliver Turajski, Dalton Haberman, Jonathan Stevens, Aditya Prathap, Will O'Brien, Federico Chávez-Torres, Sam B., Raul J. Muñiz, Tim Connors, T.K. Coleman, Joseph Perta, Luca Zocche, Somil Aggarwal, James Floyd, Charlie Westerman, Ravi Kurani, Matthew Hayes, Stephen Mahner, Jorja Leavitt, and many others

- Challenges: without the challenges of life, I would have far less appreciation for the positive things that come my way. 

- Travel: this year I traveled to Austin, Houston, NYC, Nashville, Tampa, SoCal, SF, South Bend, NYC, Austin, Chicago, SF, and NYC again (soon). Travel is exhausting and educational in a way most other things are not.

One thing I appreciate a LOT about NYC is just how delusional it can make you. And I don't mean this in a negative way. 


NYC is full of people with money and fame. 

So even if you have no money or fame, you're still in proximity to the people who have it. 

If you allow it, that proximity can help you gain confidence. 

Sure, it might be false confidence, but it can lead to a really incredible outcome. 

Regardless if you're an immigrant, country boy from Wisconsin, or born and raised in the inner city, you can make it. 

NYC has the potential to make anyone who wants it, into a giant. 

But you need to own it and lean in. If you don't, it will eat you up and spit you out. 

PS: I'm a huge fan of the new JP Morgan building.

The CleanTech companies of the future are the ones who are either very good at making money, OR also sell to other industries in order to fund further tech development that will allow them to serve the environmental / climate sectors. 

This morning, at the HackSummit, I heard from Will O'Brien, interviewed by Kevin Webb (Superorganism). 

Will, and many others like him, are building hardware (autonomous ocean, surface and subsurface, vehicles) that can serve the environmental restoration space. 

But the TAM of environmental restoration is small when compared to the defense and commercial sectors. 

As a result, it makes it harder to get VC interest because the overall vision is not big enough. 

What Ulysses is doing is, building tech that can serve the defense and commercial industries as well. Those two markets make up about 90% of their TAM currently. 

By doing this, their tech gets better and cheaper, and it continues allow them to serve the restoration / protection of seagrass (and other critical undersea environments). 

If you want to build these very hard, deep tech solutions, you may need to approach it in the same way. 

Just keep in mind, in many cases, the CleanTech companies, making the most impact, may not be primarily branded as CleanTech companies at all.
