Picked an interesting week to have our annual global meeting .... in Mexico, didn't we!

Well, there are lots of heavily armed police vehicles rolling around in Mexico City right now, but our pre-conf 'outing' to the amazing pyramids of Teotihuacán was incident free (other than a bit of sunburn for white skinned, winter trained Europeans)

It was interesting this morning when the power went out for the hotel mid meeting, and we continued the presentations in the black out. A good test whether you know your material or not 😆 

I will let you know if things get better or worse, but as I am sure you know, almost nothing gets in the way of shopper insight and cat man enthusiasts as they talk about data!

Mexico! Why not?

A few take outs of the Vegas CMA event 😏 

There were many talking about how AI is already saving time in data analysis and preparation (dunnhumby say their ‘decision trees’ come out in an hour or so rather than a day of work, including AI labelling of segments). Engine talked about using various tools all ‘orchestrated’ by ChatGPT, using each tool for what its good at. 

Although live examples were not really being shown - I got the impression that much of this is still at an early stage of development. 

Some big clients are powering ahead with building internal AI tools to bring data sets together and do the analysis heavy lifting but I feel that this again is also somewhat 'emergent'. 

All are quick to say that the human component of assessing the outcomes, and building the story was still crucial, perhaps more important even in an AI driven world.

Amanda Blevins from Kellanova made what I think was a great point: that as AI gives retailers the power to do more and more analysis for themselves of sales and loyalty data, rather than leaning on suppliers, those suppliers need to think how to add more unique value from providing richer, human insights. Music to my ears 😊

Yves Boussemart from XGS.AI told us about the “revenge of the arts graduates” as in the age where AI will do more of the data grunt work the need for story telling and synthesis comes to the forefront. Asked what skills future managers needed, he said it would be about knowing what questions to ask, being able to validate AI’s output, and weaving convincing stories. Amen.

AI aside,  I was impressed by the work done at Meijer by Shana Ward  aligning both suppliers and internal teams into a more streamlined, less time wasteful category review process. In the past, too much supplier input was misaligned because of varying approaches. A shared process now delivers a punchier 'so what' summary to the merchants from the internal category team with supplier support.  This hits a crucial point:  inherent complexity in many different parties looking at the category separately. We at SI, under the retailer’s auspices, sometimes get all the key suppliers in a room to share and discuss our data. It’s powerful. The focus then is also by definition 100% on category.

Michael Quinn made the wonderful point that its time to stop talking “category” and start talking “store”. After all our own category is one part of the whole and a retailer’s ultimate goal is more traffic and bigger baskets, however that is achieved (something SI has built into its DNA, hence my enthusiasm!)

Finally, a selfish-ish mention of Corey Furdock's (our client at Reckitt Benckiser) fresh 5 step insight application process (see pic). He says given how much resource we put into buying data, why comparatively little in driving the so what’s?  We in cat man can be thought leaders in our organisations on how to get the best value from data across all functions.

Are we still alive? 

I know some are worried…. so I’m posting as a reassurance. Not only alive  here in Mexico, but enjoying soup in a funky dish. That’s some fancy differentiation going on there.

Always the sense of part melancholy, part relief and part optimism. The end of an event. Your expensive stand taken down. Some great conversations and input to remember ( will post a summary of my take outs). Other missed opportunities to slightly frustrate.

Welcome to the brave new world of the EU border - 40 of these ridiculous new machines to serve about 400 people queuing here at Madrid this morning. Guess what,  all but about 7 are non functioning. Hence a sea of red lights. And an hours delay 

Fantastic.  

And this is about the 4th time they’ve taken my fingerprints already.

Much debate here on the merits of calling oatmilk “milk”. Given The recent legal ruling locally. 

Here’s one solution. “Milked Walnuts”. 

Dunno if this is just me but it paints a very strange picture in my mind😅

But would this pass the legal test??

Great to see Kelloggs here in Mexico using the pack itself to promote a ‘new’ usage occasion.

Cereal for snacking. I guess. 

Honestly I think this is a global first breakaway from the ubiquitous bowl pic and I’d like to recognise the brand manager that pushed that through*

Rare to see what is evidently a true category growth strategy embraced by a brand👍
