Helping accountants get to their first $1M and beyond

My story begins years ago when I had an advisory firm but was struggling to increase margins.

I was a one person practice 100% remote.

I was trying to be everything to everyone.

I did not have a niche.

I did not have an ideal client.

I took any business that would hire me.

I did not stand out among the thousands of other consulting firms.

I competed mostly on low price. 

My friends and family would always see a stressed-out, black circles under eyes, 80+ hours/wk working person would have zero personal life.

I took a hard look at my business and found a lot of waste.

Too many services and too many different kinds of clients.

I decided that I needed to focus.

I began to focus on how I could productize my services.

With a business partner I helped develop an automated payment and Google reviews platform (BizPayO) that helps accountants get paid faster, without the expensive fees and which snagged a Google Review after every successful payment.

Through the payment app I found that most accountants were not charging enough.

That inspired me to launch a second SaaS company, a pricing application (Taxplow) that shows accountants what they should be charging based on the services they offer, their location, the client’s situation, and a couple dozen other key data points.

But the problem is bigger than this.

Accountants needs help differentiating themselves and coming up with a unique offering.

One that would help create a moat around their business.

So they would not become just another H&R Block or low-cost accounting firm that would position them as just a commodity.

Accountants Forward is my d/b/a, but it is the business of ME.  As the name suggests, I want to see the accounting profession move forward so I am relying on what I know and whom I know in this great profession, where I've dedicated over 20 years of my career as an editor and journalist. 
My primary work is consulting with vendors, service providers and organizations on how they can better connect with and serve accounting professionals, with the goal of improving partnerships and overall relations with them. 
I use my editorial and journalistic knowledge to advise on and create content that matters to accountants. I help produce articles, blogs, white papers, and video content as well as host or guest on webinars, podcasts and live events. I am also helping do the same with accounting firms who have services to market to their clients.

In this role I was the ambassador for the AccountingWEB brand in the US. As part of that mission, I personally ensured that all content produced aligned with the brand voice and mission, define standards, control and accountability. 
In addition to overseeing all editorial-related functions of the site, helping build audience engagement was essential. On a daily basis, I helped ensure that quality content was created and distributed to all of our channels, from the website to newsletters and videos.
One of the largest accomplishments was playing a key role in building a content agenda and securing expert speakers for our first-ever-live event. This came on the heels of a pandemic that all but stopped live events, and turned a profit doing so. We attracted approximately 200 individuals from the accounting profession and service providers in this space from the US, Canada and Australia.
During my tenure I also oversaw record website traffic and subscriber growth, the vast majority of whom were accounting professionals that regularly engaged with and benefited from our content. 
I was also responsible for the duties of the editorial team (Senior Editor, Copy Editor) and regular check-ins with sales, marketing, design and production efforts. 
I assigned writers/contributors to produce all necessary content (editorial and commercial) on time and within budget. Regularly measured content effectiveness, against key strategic drivers - engagement, subscribers and overall market share/reach. 
Attended key commercial meetings, to support the Account Development Manager with content marketing ideas and concepts, assist and occasionally lead the creation, planning and execution of custom-content programs for advertisers. Sustained key relationships with marketing partners and the wider industry ecosystem. Influenced the marketing message and activities (social media, brochures, newsletters) help ensure quality of produced marketing-related materials.

Editorial Manager/US Team Lead, AccountingWEB.com

Effectively turned a brand-less accounting website and "publication" into a platform for thought leadership specifically for practicing accounting professionals. I helped transition the audience (which was largely unmeasured prior to my arrival) from a general business and "accounting-interested" to one targeted at CPAs, professional bookkeepers and Enrolled Agents.. I was also able to help segment and focus the content to one that was practical and useful to these professionals, who largely represent the majority of the accounting profession. Specifically, the focus was on solo practitioners and firms in the "sub-10" staff range, which again represent the largest portion of professional accountants.
I was responsible for oversight of editorial strategy, calendars, long-term planning, story ideation and pitch workflows, and general management of publishing schedules.
I eventually hired and oversaw the duties of a Deputy Editor and curated content from dozens of site contributors. This content included articles, white papers and even some videos. I also helped craft our marketing message and regularly weighed in on the activities (i.e. social media, brochures, newsletters) of marketing personnel, as well as any produced marketing-related materials. 
I also worked in tandem with our Group/Global Publisher on the creation, planning and execution of custom content programs for site sponsors. I aided in the development of new revenue opportunities,  and offer new ideas for custom content marketing programs for our new commercial partners. Additionally, I helped maintain financial and commercial goals, contributed to the overall business objectives of the AccountingWEB brand while engaging the accounting community as brand representative at conferences and events. I was able to accomplish all of this through my established relationships with professional accountants, thought leaders and service providers in the accounting space.

Holding this dual title, I regularly reported on news and trends in accounting and business technologies affecting accounting professionals, the vendors that serve them and technology consultants/resellers that support such applications.  Edited and assigned articles to contributors and analyzed relevant industry trends where applicable. 
Oversaw production of a dedicated microsite and newsletter, distributed to thousands of professionals 3-times per week. Administrated the microsite in the CMS, which included updating articles, graphics, videos and slideshows. 
In addition, I helped produce the agenda and procure speakers for live events and webinars.

It is my core belief that learning and sharing knowledge that can improve someone's life is the greatest achievement one can have. For nearly my entire career, my passion has been helping to curate information on what makes businesses tick. A huge part of that process is the role of the accountant, a profession I've been proud to observe, and even serve in my own way, for the vast majority of my time as a journalist, editor, and now content strategist and creator. 
I am particularly keyed in to how businesses, accounting firms, and the technology companies that serve them think about their growth and what they bring to clients and customers. The accounting profession, and business in general, has been going through a major transition over the past decade, and I've been honored to bear witness to that change and share what I know in order to aid these individuals and organizations on their journey. In addition, I am an avid foodie, beer snob, baseball fanatic, musician, husband, and proud father of two.
