One thing I got completely wrong early in my career.

I thought success came from:
	•	Working the longest hours
	•	Being the smartest in the room
	•	Saying yes to everything
	•	Chasing fast promotions

It took me years to realize none of that actually compounds.

What did:
	•	Learning how to think, not just execute
	•	Building relationships before needing them
	•	Saying no to the wrong opportunities
	•	Choosing managers over job titles
	•	Playing long games with patient people

The irony?

No one teaches these things explicitly.

Looking back, the biggest career advantage wasn’t talent or effort.

A quiet moment in Scotland reminded me how far I’ve come.

When I first moved to Dubai, my first employer expected one thing above all else:
24/7 availability.

Late nights were normal

Weekends didn’t exist

Being “always on” was framed as commitment

At the time, I accepted it.

I thought hustle was the price of ambition.

What I didn’t understand then was the cost.

Constant stress started showing up physically:

	•	Poor sleep
	•	Chronic fatigue
	•	Weight gain
	•	A mind that never fully switched off

I was delivering at work — but slowly burning out outside it.

Stepping back changed everything.

I stopped asking “How do I work harder?”
and started asking “What do I actually want from my career?”

That clarity mattered.

I began experimenting quietly:

	•	Small side projects
	•	Weekend ideas
	•	Learning without pressure

Over the next three years, those side hustles:

	•	Turned into focused ventures
	•	Became profitable
	•	Grew into full-time businesses

Not by grinding more hours —
but by working with intent.

Sitting here today, with space to think, I’m reminded of a simple truth:

Rest isn’t the opposite of ambition.
It’s what makes ambition sustainable.

If there’s one takeaway from this journey, it’s this:

Build careers that give you clarity, protect your health, and let you play long games.

No success is worth burning yourself out for.
