🚨 Freelance writers, stay alert. Scams are circulating right now that you must be aware of.

We’re seeing increasingly realistic scams where someone:
• Creates a convincing replica of a real person’s LinkedIn profile
• Uses a fake email address to appear credible
• Contacts writers with project requests that look legitimate

These emails can be extremely detailed, including full scopes, content outlines, budgets, and timelines.

Ironically, that level of detail upfront is actually a red flag. 🚩

In real client conversations, you usually have to ask questions and pull that information out. 

But newer freelancers don't necessarily know that, which is why these scams are working.

Then comes the even bigger red flag, usually something along the lines of:

“I will send a certified bank draft or cashier’s check. Please provide your full name, physical address, and mobile number so payment can be issued.”

At that point, personal information is being requested under the guise of payment. 🚩

Fake bank drafts are mailed to you and deposited, as "proof" that the "client" has money. 

But they soon bounce back, opening up opportunities to request banking information from you.

These scams are sophisticated enough that even experienced freelancers are getting caught in long back-and-forth exchanges before realizing something isn’t right.

If you’re an aspiring or established freelance writer:
✔ Verify who you’re speaking with
✔ Be cautious about sharing personal details
✔ Pause / don't respond if something feels off
✔ Seek input from trusted professionals

This screenshot pretty much sums up the last couple of years. While it may not seem like anything's going on on the surface, it most certainly is.

I'm not posting this to get sympathy. I'm posting because it's important to shed light on what entrepreneurship can look like behind the scenes.

As much as becoming self-employed was an empowering choice, it was also a necessity.

I simply could not function working inside other people's rigid structures or environments, or alongside inflexible, insensitive people.

I needed to be able to prioritize meeting my own needs first without ever letting a spinning plate drop (my livelihood and high standards for myself).

And now that my health is worse than it has been in a long time—through no fault of my own—I'm more grateful than ever to myself for "getting there."

For making 100% of my own decisions in my life and work.
For working only with people who respect my values and needs.
For living in integrity and operating as my full authentic self.

My work funds my dream lifestyle.
I just enjoy it when my body allows, and that's okay.

I don't think it's a coincidence that I've been working with increasing numbers of people with their own version of endometriosis—things that require special attention or consideration.

And it's an absolute joy to guide them in finding their own version of a freedom-focused lifestyle, with no apologies.

When I first got into business, I was always second guessing myself. Will people buy from me? Have I got what it takes? When will I feel successful?

Feeling overwhelmed with sales? It's not you, my friend. Medical writing clients speak a whole other (secret) language you just haven't learned yet! 😅

Let's debunk some of these together.

First, when they say "This was out of our budget so we accepted another proposal instead of yours,"

They actually mean... 

"We were too afraid to negotiate with you so we asked someone else to provide a quote and went with that 'cause it was easier."

9 times out of 10, there was no pre-defined budget.
They were simply uncomfortable with the sales process and avoided it.

You didn't do anything wrong.
And you certainly didn't overcharge.

Next, when they say "We are looking for someone with experience in X,"

They actually mean...

"We don't realize these are transferable skills and want the work to be completed to a high standard so we're playing it safe."

They weren't being difficult or guarded.
And you weren't too inexperienced or incapable.

They were just making an incorrect assumption.
And they needed you to connect the dots for them.

Once you start to learn the secret language clients speak (and speak it too), you'll start winning work far more consistently.

You give just enough emotional signal for the right person to want the conversation.

There's both tension and resolution.
But there are still questions to be asked.

That's where real-time conversations fit in, so you can move things away from "I'm reading about you" towards forming a lifelong partnership.

Take a look at your current bio. Does it read like a résumé, or like the opening scene of a story someone wants to be part of?

We’re taught that productivity is a game we play with ourselves that we don’t really want to play but feel like we have to.

👉🏻 Tighten the schedule.
👉🏻 Put better systems in place.
👉🏻 Boost discipline in any way we can.

Because that’s what school, employers, and professional life trained us to do.

But when you start building a freelance career, productivity suddenly acquires a whole new meaning. One that’s far less defined and often confusing.

And what looks like procrastination or inconsistency isn’t laziness at all. Your inner child just wants autonomy.

After years in highly structured, demanding environments, part of you resists recreating the same rigid systems for yourself.

So when you over-structure your day, you might notice resentment or resistance creeping in.

Other times, procrastination is protection.

A part of you is afraid of getting it wrong.
Afraid the client might hate your work.
Afraid your reputation could take a hit.

So instead of starting, you watch one more video, reorganize your to-do list again, or check your emails for the hundredth time.

And you don’t even enjoy the distraction, because you’re aware you’re avoiding something.

The habits influencing how you manage your time often aren’t about today. 

They come from how your time was managed growing up.

Approval tied to productivity.
Constant pressure to perform.
Or feeling like you had no control at all.

Early on in building a freelance business, it’s also normal not to fully trust yourself yet.

So you lean on rigid routines or overworking because it feels safer than stepping away and trusting you’ll come back to the work.

Then there’s energy.

Some people work best jumping straight into their biggest task and resting later.

Others need care, movement, or joy first before they’re ready to work.

There isn’t a single “right” sequence.

Productivity improves when you work with your brain and body instead of copying someone else’s routine.

And at times, resistance is telling the truth.

The task in front of you is a “should,” not a genuine want.

And if there’s no real desire behind it, forcing productivity will always feel like pushing a boulder uphill.

A more useful question than “How do I make myself be more productive?” might be:
“What part of me needs attention right now?”

Because when you stop fighting yourself and start listening instead, productivity stops feeling like something you have to force and starts supporting the life you actually want.

The breakthrough isn’t a better system.
It’s a better relationship with yourself.

Pushing harder, marketing more, and forcing visibility never grows my business. Here's what does:

→ Feeling comfortable in my own skin
→ Being more myself than ever before
→ Taking ownership of my life & decisions
→ Gaining confidence through experience
→ Energetic alignment with my services
→ Trusting myself more than I did yesterday

I used to think working more equalled getting better results.
But that only made me exhausted and bitter.

Then I noticed something.

Whenever I took the pressure off myself to get results in a certain way during a specified timeframe, things moved.

→ Ideal clients started reaching out.
→ Conversations turned into work.
→ I became fully-booked in no time.

It was so counterintuitive!
But it was a phenomenon I learned how to replicate.

🚫 It's rarely about tactics, strategies, or others' thoughts about me.

🙌🏼 It's usually about self-trust, genuine confidence, and energy flow.

While other business coaches teach tactics first, I teach alignment first.

Because when you are crystal clear on who you are, who you serve, how you serve them, and what makes you unique, your purpose shines through.

You magnetize dream clients and it feels effortless.

You stop forcing things to happen and let them flow.

I will always prioritize internal shifts over external strategy.

Heading out on your own and leaving the comforts of a familiar career path is pretty terrifying, especially if those around you aren't very supportive of you becoming self-employed.

To most aspiring writers, the idea of asking people in their network to critique their writing or give feedback on a proposal is far-fetched to say the least.

As a 22-year-old coming out of universities and research facilities, I had plenty of medical knowledge and clinical practice under my belt.

But with no formal medical writing training, no advanced degree, and no one I could look up to who was already thriving as a freelancer, I felt like a fish out of water at the best of times.

It wasn’t enough to discover medical writing; I needed to:
  1. Overcome my imposter syndrome
  2. Create a supportive network from scratch
  3. Build a strong brand for my company, and
  4. Figure out how to market and sell my medical writing services

...from scratch, all on my own.

It was really, really hard and stressful.

But I’m so glad I stuck it out because 18 months later, I was making regular $12k months and turning down work because I was overloaded, without having to market myself anymore.

I even turned down a $182k/yr medical writing job so I could retain my newfound (priceless) independence.

2️⃣ I remove defensive language and justification

3️⃣ I check rates / fees (and usually bump them up)

4️⃣ I align it with what the client actually wants

5️⃣ I suggest better phrasing, structure, and add-ons

6️⃣ I make sure responsibilities are clear both ways

In the vast majority of cases, these proposals are accepted with no pushback whatsoever (we're talking $2,000+ each).

If I hadn't been involved? They probably would have been ghosted. 👻

I woke up the other day and saw this in my head. I named it the Compounding Career Model. Here's what it means...

🔵 The first visual (blue) is the Reactive Career Cycle.

🟠 The second (orange) is the Designed Career Path.

As you can see, the first part of both models are the same.

Before embarking on a new career, you put a lot of thought into what might be well-suited to you.

You undergo training to get onto that path.
You secure a role or start a business.
And then you learn even more on the job.

In the first scenario (the Reactive Career Cycle), you cross the threshold of Perceived Stability, where you realize you're not in control of whether that role continues to be well-suited to you or sustainable for you.

Your boss or manager could change.
Your tasks and responsbilities could change.
The systems and processes you rely on could change.
The people you work alongside could change.
Your workload could drastically change.

Anything could happen.
And you have no control over it.

Hence the disillusionment.
Shortly followed by burnout.
And exiting that role or career.
Before the cycle begins again.

Whereas, in the second scenario (the Designed Career Path), you build an Autonomy Infrastructure and pass right through on an upward trajectory.

That initial growth you experienced leads to further, self-directed growth, as you explore more ways in which you can provide value to your clients and peers.

Your role expands and evolves in line with your interests and skill sets, and that expansion compounds until you reach a threshold, plateaux, or level of success you're comfortable with.

But no one else is there to tear you down.
Your life and career are yours and yours only.
You get to decide what you do and don't do.
And it's incredibly empowering (and fun).

When reflecting back on myself as a teenager, preparing to go to university, I always knew I'd carve out my own career path.

I didn't know what it would be back then, but I knew it'd be my own.
