I watched a video today that made me cry.

I heard that James Van Der Beek (aka Dawson Leary) died this week. 

Today, I watched a video he recorded on his last birthday, his 48th, and I wept. 

He was thin, frail, and yet so clear eyed and spoke with such truth that I felt it in my soul.

He shared a reflection of what cancer taught him.

How when he was young he identified as an actor. 

Then he married his wife, and took on the better identity of husband.

When he became a father, he thought being a dad would be the greatest identity because he took such joy in being with his children.

When cancer stripped away all of these identities, because he was too weak to do what he did before, he asked himself who he was really beyond these identities.

He sat in meditation and heard that he was someone who was worthy of God’s love, and therefore he was worthy of his own.

He didn’t share this message with anger, or self-pity, he shared it to provide hope for others so they may know that they are worthy of love, too. 

So, I was reminded again to live each day as if it is the first and last day.

With wonder and awe, and with deep reverence and gratitude.

To experience deep love and joy, and then share that generously with others. 

I remember that everyday really is a gift, and that tomorrow is not promised for any of us.

Yes, do great work. Be passionate about what you do.  

Have fun.  Spread joy. 

And also, question how you spend every minute of your day. 

Give yourself permission to be present in your own life and experience it fully without apology.

Say thank you continuously.  

Because it’s a short ride.

Have you ever watched old audition videos of famous artists?

You can recognize them.

But they're not the same person.

They're more timid and hesitant.
Their voice doesn't project the way it will.
The potential is there, but they haven't stepped into it yet.

That's the thing about transformation. 

The identity shift comes first, and the skills come second.

I think about this when I look back at who I was before I left corporate.

The potential was there. But I hadn't stepped into her yet.

Before you can chase the big dream, you have to believe you're worthy of it.

They already exist.
Not waiting for permission.
Waiting for you to step into them.

Not everyone deserves access to your vision.

I learned this the hard way.

Years ago, after I left corporate to start my business, I shared my big dreams with someone I trusted. I thought she'd offer support or encouragement.

Instead she shared all of the reasons it wouldn't work.

Too risky.
Too late.
Too unrealistic.

She wasn't being cruel. She was projecting her own fears onto my future.

But I didn't know that then. So I let her doubt become mine. I came home after our meeting and my journal entry was full of fear and doubt.

Luckily, I caught myself. I did some deep work to separate her fear from my truth. But it shook me.

Here's what I've learned since:

Some people will never celebrate your vision because it threatens their comfort.

Some people love you, but will never be ready to do the things they want to do. So they can't imagine how you have the courage to do so.

Your growth reminds them of the risks they didn't take.
Your faith confronts their fear.
Your expansion challenges their staying small.

That's not your burden to carry.

Protect your vision like you'd protect something precious. Because it is.

Not everyone needs to know what you're building.
Not everyone gets a seat at the table of your becoming.

Share your dreams with people who can hold the bigness of your vision with you.

How do we keep our peace when everything feels heavy?

I’ve been struggling with this question lately. 

I’m hearing it from my clients, friends, family, and colleagues. 

People who care deeply. 

Who are awake to what's happening in the world. 

And who want to stay engaged, but are quietly exhausted from what they’re reading and new information that is shared daily.

I just recorded a solo podcast episode on this because it keeps coming up in conversations lately.

And I feel it, too.

So I sat down and recorded what's actually helping me right now:

→ Daily morning devotion before I allow the outside world in
→ Prayer that reconnects me to what's true
→ Intentionally choosing actions that align with my values and beliefs
→ Boundaries I hold without guilt
→ Focusing on what's within my control and releasing what's not

These aren't luxuries. 

They're how I stay compassionate without collapsing under the weight.

Because you can care deeply without carrying everything.

And you can stay awake to what’s happening in the world without losing yourself in it.

At my most burned out, I wanted to get in my car and drive to the ocean.

No plan. No stopping. Just drive to my escape across the country. (I know it sounds crazy)

I was exhausted, frustrated, and didn't know what I was going to do next.

My nervous system was screaming for help. And the only thing it could imagine was running.

Luckily I told my husband my thoughts .

He listened patiently, and helped me breathe again.

Instead of driving to California, I took a few days off. 

Went outside. 
Journaled. 
Slept a lot. 
And focused on the basics that bring me back to myself.

And when I regulated, I could think clearly again.

The urge to run wasn't a character flaw, it was information.

My body telling me that I had pushed too far for too long.

I see this with my clients.

Often waiting until they’ve reached their breaking point.  

They want strategy and a plan. 

But when someone is at their lowest point, we don't start with mindset work.

We start with regulation.

Because you can't think your way out of burnout.

You can't vision-board your way out of a dysregulated nervous system.

You can't plan your next chapter when your body is in survival mode.

First, we regulate. 

Then, we rebuild.

Of quitting, disappearing, starting over somewhere no one knows you, you're not broken.

You're depleted, and that's fixable.

Not by pushing harder, but by pausing first.

Every time you got up when you didn't want to.
Every time you chose courage when it was easier not to.
Every time you kept going when everything in you said stop.
Every time you experienced resistance, and still took action.

I recently sat down and wrote out moments in my life where I could remember being strong.

Moving countries at four years old.
Learning a new language in Kindergarten.
Being the first to go to college in my family.
Building a career no one handed me.
Leaving what was familiar and secure to find something true.

When I looked at that list, I forced myself to celebrate how far I’ve come. 

Not because it was impressive.
Because I had spent years believing it wasn’t possible, or that I wasn't enough.

You are not becoming powerful someday, you already are.

Go and make the list.

You can sleepwalk through a successful life.

I did for years, living on autopilot.

Success started feeling hollow in 2011, but I didn't do anything about it until 2017.

When I finally started working with my coach, I saw that I was the one keeping myself stuck, not my circumstances.

She didn't let me minimize my dreams or make excuses.

She challenged me to be honest about my fears and limiting beliefs.

And she supported me as I wrote the biggest vision for my life I could imagine at that time.

I see this with my clients too.

They come to me when they've lost their job and don't know what's next.

Or they've had a health scare that woke them up.

Or their kids are graduating and they realize how much of their identity was wrapped up in them.

They're ready to envision a life they're excited to wake up to.

An identity that challenges them in the best way.

To experience daily joy they didn't know was possible.

There comes a point on the journey where the dream becomes so clear, so powerful, that it pulls you forward like a magnet.

You're no longer running from something you don't want.

You can see and taste something you do.

And that's when faith asks you to take the leap.

To look crazy to the people who knew the old you.

To bet on yourself.

Not because you have certainty.

But because you trust what's calling you more than you fear what you're leaving behind.

When I stopped looking backward with self-judgment I started looking forward with gratitude.

Not because the past was perfect.
But because it brought me here.

When I left corporate, some relationships shifted. 

Not because anyone did anything wrong, because we were no longer walking the same path.

The friends who once understood me didn't recognize the version I was becoming.

The conversations that used to feel easy started feeling forced.

Sometimes the people who loved the old version of you struggle to celebrate the new one.

Not because they don't care.
But because your expansion confronts their comfort.
Your courage reminds them of risks they haven't taken.
Your change challenges their staying the same.

This isn't about cutting people off, it’s about recognizing that some relationships are seasonal.

They were meant for a chapter of life, or a specific season. 

Honoring that with gratitude, not guilt, is part of becoming who you're meant to be.

The people meant for your next chapter?

They'll meet you there.
They'll celebrate your growth instead of questioning it.
They'll expand alongside you instead of pulling you back.

As you step into this next season, ask yourself:
Who expands me? And who keeps me small?

For most of my life, I believed self-love was something I had to earn.

After I proved myself.
After I delivered enough.
After I became enough.

But that day never came because the goalpost kept moving.

And my body was keeping score.

Self-love isn't selfish, it’s survival.

When we constantly override our body's signals, and push through exhaustion, ignore our needs, dismiss our emotions, we aren't being strong.

We're abandoning ourselves.

I used to think self-care was the answer.

But self-care is what you do.
Self-love is how you relate to yourself.

Self-care says, "I'll rest after I finish this."
Self-love says, "I'm allowed to rest before I'm depleted."

Self-care says, "I deserve this because I worked hard."
Self-love says, "I deserve this because I exist."

For high-achievers that shift from earning to existing is one of the hardest things we'll ever learn.

Self-love isn't grand gestures, it’s often small but significant ways we show up for ourselves. 

Noticing you're exhausted and resting anyway.
Setting a boundary and not apologizing.
Asking, "What do I need?" and honoring the answer.

When you learn to tend to yourself, you stop performing service.

You start embodying it.

What happens when staying comfortable becomes more frightening than taking the leap?

That's the question I explored with my friend Roseanne Deucher, MPA on this week's Live the Width of Your Life podcast.

Roseanne's path has not been linear.

No one is coming to give you permission.

Not to change.
Not to rest.
Not to want more.
Not to love your life differently.

We often wait for the moment when it feels completely certain.
Completely safe.
Completely validated.

But expansion and growth don't happen that way.

They begin with a decision, and with greater faith. 
With the belief that your alignment and joy matter.

That the desire to want a big, bold, beautiful life isn't indulgent or crazy.

You don't need more credentials.
You don't need more validation.
You don't need someone else to say it's time.

You can give yourself the permission right now. 

I waited years for someone to tell me it was okay to start my own business. 
To want something different. 
To build a life that didn't follow the expected path.

That permission never came.

I had to give it to myself.

Everyone wants the transformation.

But we don't always love what it takes to get there.

Here's what I see high-achievers do when they're in the middle of growth:

They compare their timeline to someone else's.
They try to rush through the uncomfortable parts.
They assume something is wrong because it doesn't feel good yet.

None of that speeds anything up.

Because the uncomfortable middle is the process.

We don’t get to skip any steps. 

That dark, slow, in-between stage when everything that was familiar dissolves, that’s the beginning of growth. 

Everytime, I’ve been there, I was convinced I’d made a mistake.

I felt like I was standing still. But I wasn’t. 

I had to have faith, and believe before it had manifested. 

Without the discomfort, the growth doesn't take root. 

So if you're in the messy middle right now and it feels slow, uncomfortable, and like nothing is happening, be patient. 

This might just be the most important season of your life.

Trust it. Even when you can't see it working.

Messy Middle

Bubble baths and face masks aren't going to fix your burnout.

I know that sounds obvious, but so many of us have been sold a version of self-care that's a bandaid to a bigger problem. 

This week on the Live the Width of Your Life podcast, I sat down with Victoria Evans, the author of Beyond Bubble Baths and Face Masks, and we got honest about what self-care actually looks.

Victoria left a successful career at L'Oréal, went through eating disorder recovery, and completely redefined what self-worth means to her.

We talk about why so many high-achiever find themselving following all the rules, checking every box, and still feel empty.

That's not a personal failure, it’s misalignment.

The world is really loud right now. 
There are distractions all around us. 
It's easy to get lost down rabbit holes that create fear and despair. 

When I need to quiet my mind, I go outside.

Not to exercise.
Not to optimize.
To remember that I'm part of something much bigger.

When life feels loud and my thoughts won't stop spinning, nature is where I find the greatest sense of peace.

I walk until my nervous system settles.
Until the "what ifs" fade.
Until I remember what actually matters.

If your mind has been loud lately, take this as your sign to step outside today, even for 5 minutes.

Who are you if you don’t produce or achieve anything today?

If you didn’t accomplish anything?

If you couldn’t check anything off your to-do list?

If this makes you feel uncomfortable, I can guarantee you’re not alone.

For years, I didn't know who I was without my productivity.

My identity was built on output, external validation, and dopamine hits of crossing things off my to-list and emptying my inbox. 

After 25 years in corporate, I started building my business in January, 2019.

For the first time in my life, my calendar was completely empty. 

No meetings. No one's agenda to follow. Nowhere to be.

I felt free, but I also was terrified and uncomfortable. 

I decided not to fill it back up because I felt like I had to appear busy, and instead build a schedule and life aligned with my values and what was most important to me.

And what I found underneath all that striving?

Someone who was always enough.
Someone who didn't need to earn love.
Someone worthy just as she was.

Too many of us believe we have to say yes to every meeting, every invitation, every request.

But is that true, or is it just what we've been conditioned to believe?

I protect my calendar fiercely, because I finally get to build what I want.
