There are only two components to succeeding as an political and/or membership organisation:

1. Lowering barriers for taking the desired action (with you)
2. Increasing motivation for said action until it surpasses (1)

A lot of organisations struggle in the first category. They might feel their cause speak’s for itself. Or they often ask too much, too early of their target audiences. 

They might be excellent at building motivation, but they still fail to achieve the desired outcome; be it increasing fundraising revenue, keeping existing or attracting new members/supporters, winning an issue, etc.

As a result they spend even more time and money on building motivation; through campaigning, mobilisation, rapid response, etc but they still fail again and again.

In addition they start questioning their practices; Is our paid media not up to snuff? Is our e-mail marketing the problem? Should we get a new telemarketing agency? They might even look at replacing staff members.

Money flows to your cause. Supporters and members flock to your cause. And you leverage both to increase legitimacy and your influence on society.

and it’s f******* brillant. 

 This is what happens when you stop pretending class warfare isn't real.

The UK Green Party of England and Wales  just dropped the most dangerous political ad I've seen in years.

Here's why it's a masterclass 👇

WHAT THEY DID:

Most politicians: "We'll create opportunities! Better future! Stay positive!"

Green Party: "You're running yourself to death while someone else gets rich off YOUR exhaustion."

THE GENIUS:

✅ They named the enemy

Not "the economy is tough" but "the wealth YOU create is going upward to the super rich while you can't afford the dentist"

✅ They used FEAR + ACTION (the science)

Research proves: fear paired with solutions mobilizes people. Hope? It just delays action and creates false security.

✅ They broke social conformity

"What if the most powerful thing we can do... all together at once... is to STOP running and look around?"

That's the spark. The moment that breaks the bystander effect.

✅ They made it VISCERAL 

Builders building houses they'll never live in

Nurses queuing at food banks  
 
You working full-time, still broke

 "Wages stuck in 2008, prices racing ahead"

THE SHIFT:

From "try harder" to "the game is rigged"
From individual shame to collective rage
From hoping for change to DEMANDING it

"Good leaders put people before profit. Rivers are for swimming in, not being poisoned to protect profits."

Simple. Emotional. Beneficial. Actionable.

That's the formula. 

WHY IT WORKS:

This isn't about recycling or carbon footprints.

This is about CLASS WARFARE—and they're finally saying it out loud.

"The people we elected choose to serve the wealthy and not us. That is obscene."

No both-sides. No compromise. No "we're all in this together."

Just: Stop. Look. See who's robbing you. Now let's change the rules.

This is branded activism at its finest:

Turning minority insight (economists know wealth extraction is crushing people) into majority action (everyone FEELS it, now they can NAME it).

"When we live well and protect our environment, we don't burn out. It's how we grow."

Everyone wants a village, but no one wants to be a villager.

A post I recently made went viral.

Thousands of you shared it. The comments revealed something I didn't expect: you didn't just relate to it; you felt seen by it.

So I wrote the essay you've been asking for. And it goes much 
deeper than I expected.

The viral line was just the surface.

Beneath it is a story about social atrophy, third places, and why the most connected generation in history can't name three people to call at 3am.
But it's also about something bigger, something we've stopped noticing because we're living inside it.

Here's what the essay unpacks:

→ Why "being a villager" means accepting friction as the cost of connection (and why we've tried to eliminate that cost)

→ How we dismantled the infrastructure of belonging; third places, casual encounters, low-stakes togetherness

When we show up as villagers, imperfectly, physically, without full control, we don't just reconnect with people.

We return to the real world itself.
Faces replace feeds. Voices replace text. Time stretches again. The body gets involved. Life stops being something we manage from a distance and becomes something we participate in.

This isn't about romanticizing the past or abolishing boundaries.
It's about recognizing that the mess we keep optimizing away is the thing that makes belonging possible.

The village we say we want doesn't appear on its own.
It emerges when enough of us stop optimizing our lives away from one another.

Why unpaid change work is  killing our movements?

"If you really cared about the planet, you'd do this for free."

This sentence has destroyed more sustainability careers than any corporation ever could.

Let me tell you why.

I spent the last week writing about the most toxic myth in our industry; one that keeps brilliant educators broke, organizers burnt out, and real change-makers leaving the field entirely.

Here's the lie we've all been taught:

Charging for transformation work = capitalism = bad.

Here's the truth nobody wants to say out loud:

When you demand that change-makers work for free, you're not fighting capitalism.

You're enforcing it.

Let me be clear about what capitalism actually is:

Extracting surplus value from exploited labor
Hoarding wealth while workers starve  
Prioritizing profit over people and planet

What we are doing:
Valuing two decades of expertise
Running a non-profit with a capped salary
Reinvesting every cent into movements and subsidized access

We are not capitalists. We are workers who refuses to be exploited.

And here's the part that keeps me up at night:

People drop $500 on conference tickets without blinking.
$2,000 on laptops. $8 on lattes.

But ask them to invest in transformation work that could fundamentally shift how we approach ecological collapse?

"That's too expensive, it should be free.”

We trained the world to think our work is worthless by giving it away for free.

You know who benefits when educators, organizers, and sustainability professionals are too broke to continue?

→ The consultants charging $50K for greenwashing reports
→ The corporations peddling "sustainable growth" fantasies
→ The tech bros selling salvation through apps

Business-as-usual wins when real change-makers burn out.

I wrote about this because I'm tired of watching brilliant minds leave the field.

I wrote about this because the "do it for free" crowd needs to understand the material reality of doing transformation work.

I wrote about this because we deserve to be paid, and we need to stop apologizing for it.

In "The False Prophet of Free," I break down:

→ Why markets and trade aren't the same as capitalism.
→ How giving work away for free actually devalues it.
→ The responsibility that comes with charging fairly.
→ Why sustainable movements require sustained workers.

This isn't about greed. It's about survival. It's about building economic models that let transformation work actually transform; not just until we burn out, but for decades.

🔥 THIS is proof that change can happen FAST

A year ago, Zohran Mamdani launched a "radical" campaign for NYC Mayor on universal childcare and democratic socialism.

The establishment laughed.
The polls said impossible.
The experts said New York would never elect a DSA socialist.

Yesterday, he's delivering on his promise.

Just 8 DAYS into office, Governor Kathleen Courtney Hochul partnered with Mayor Mamdani to launch free universal childcare for 2-year-olds; with plans to expand to all children under 5.

From "impossible" to IMPLEMENTED in 12 months.

We all fear the authoritarian turn. Trump. Erosion of democracy. The darkness closing in.

But here's the uncomfortable truth: Crisis creates choice. As Antonio Gramsci

“The old world IS dying, now the time for monsters”..

… and hero’s. 

Mamdani would not have won without Trump. The fear, the rage, the desperation—it didn't just radicalize the right. It radicalized ordinary people to demand MORE, not less. To reject compromise candidates and fight for what they actually need. 

“The night is always darkest before the dawn.” Batman 

Change doesn't always come in decades. It can come in moments.

When people stop accepting "incrementalism" as the only option. When they stop voting for "the lesser evil" and start demanding the actual good.

New York just elected a democratic socialist who ran on BOLD policies; and he's delivering in DAYS, not years.

If this can happen in America's financial capital, it can happen anywhere.

The question isn't "can change happen?

The question is: Are YOU ready to be part of it?

P.S. - Sometimes the hero's journey starts with acknowledging the villain. Trump may be the crisis. But movements like this are the response. History doesn't pause for comfort.

Social Murder: The Crime Nobody Talks About

What is social murder?

Friedrich Engels coined the term ‘social murder’ in his 1845 work The Condition of the Working-Class in England to describe the unnatural deaths of the poor caused by the political and social elite. The concept of social murder is based on the idea that the bourgeoisie, or ruling class, is responsible for the poor’s premature deaths because they exploit workers and do nothing to change their living and working conditions.

Sound outdated? Think again. It’s happening everywhere from the sweatshops in the Global South,it’s workers collapsing in 45°C Amazon warehouses. It’s families denied life-saving treatments by their health insurance. It’s oil executives raking in billions while the planet burns, leaving us to face the consequences.

These aren’t accidents. They’re choices.

Who profits—and who suffers?

Yesterday, a small personal dream came true.

I spoke next to one of my personal heroes, 
Tim Lenton. 

At the Festa - Center for Sustainability konfence.  In the Harpa Concert Hall in Iceland.

I talked about a reflection that I keep coming back to:

I often see people misunderstand what a positive social tipping point actually is.

Many associate it with technological adoption.

More electric cars.
More renewables.
More green solutions.

That can feel like progress.

But technological adoption is not the same as societal transformation.

In my keynote, I showed two curves that look almost identical.

One is adoption of a new technology.
The other is a real positive social tipping point.

The difference:

A positive social tipping point occurs when shared values and behaviors
make systemic change self-reinforcing.

It shifts society toward living within planetary boundaries while advancing social justice. True positive tipping points are not about swapping tools,
but about reorienting the systems.

Same-sex marriage becoming law is a positive social tipping point.

It did not just introduce a new option.
It changed norms, identities, and institutions.

Technologies can support change.

But tipping points happen when societies reorganize around new expectations of what is legitimate, acceptable, and desirable.

We experienced this with the Reduction Roadmap in Denmark.

900+ companies united.

Not to oppose regulation.
But to demand it.

That collective shift helped unlock new climate legislation.

No new technology was required.

Only coordination.

That is why I believe real positive social tipping points start with collective action aimed at changing norms and rules.

Not with individual adoption.
