Joe Reis recently inspired me to consider Claude Code as a writing tool when he challenged the notion of context graphs.

He essentially took the Foundation Capital article that has been going viral and ran it through Claude Code.

It instantly transformed a very theoretical article into an entire code repo you could explore on his public GitHub (then used that as a tool to critique).

A thought then popped into my head:

"What if my writing was so clear that you could throw an entire article into Claude Code and it would one shot a working POC of the presented ideas."

Welp, the implementation chapter of our book (Ch. 7) is public on GitHub and is stored as a README file.

So let's see if my writing is clear enough for AI to one shot it.

I downloaded the repo to my local machine, got rid of every file except the README, the JSON dataset, and a folder of diagrams from the chapter.

Then I prompted: "This is my technical chapter of the book. Implement it."

I couldn't believe it... In about 10 minutes it was spinning up a Docker image, loading data into Postgres, and then running my tests.

Keep in mind I spent a couple intense weeks building that codebase for the book.

To be clear, I'm not advocating for such code to be useable, but rather it's now a tool that I can use to further validate my writing.

Present your novel ideas.
But show the working POC.

It's the same as in academia where you have research papers that include code and data for repeatability.

The bar has risen for everyone now. Talk is cheap.

Crazy Idea: I use claude code on a live stream where I'm building an app from scratch.

But...

People on the live stream can enter prompts on my behalf while I'm building to either help or mess with the project.

I think the chaos would be both fun and hilarious.

Code: The Untapped Metadata Source Driving Most Data Failures

Over the past three years, collaborating with organizations implementing data contracts and writing the O'Reilly book on the topic, it has become abundantly clear that data is surprisingly the wrong surface to address systemic data issues —we actually need to focus on code. Code not only defines what data is captured and moved through software systems, but it's also the ultimate source of truth in how a business operates and its documented changes over time. This is evident in how some of the most significant internet outages can be traced not only to code changes, but also to how those changes affected underlying data models. In this talk, I share case studies and lessons learned in extracting metadata from code and using it to enforce expectations across software systems and data products.

Remember back in the ancient internet times when you could use this cool thing called HTML to customize your Myspace profile.

Just randomly hacking away at sections to see what changed. Copy and pasting random code and hoping it works.

Vibe coding feels eerily similar.

What data scientist experienced in 2023 with the realease of ChatGPT is the same experience software engineers are experiencing today with Claude Code.

Back in 2022 I was transitioning from data science to data engineering, and a major project that led to that promotion was building and deploying a natural language processing pipeline.

Back then I was using SpaCy, which was an opinionated framework for implementing the latest production-ready NLP models.

Yeah... I open up ChatGPT and immediately see the "advanced" work I put into production was now antiquated.

While I wouldn't throw an LLM at my production project back in 2023, I was intimately aware of what was required to get business value out of text.

What ChatGPT showed me was that a large portion of the difficult parts of NLP were now just a simple API call... and more importantly, highlighted the inflection point if the momentum of change followed.

Fast forward to today, and so many software engineers built side projects over the holiday break and experienced the exact realization I had back in 2023.

"This LLM accomplished way more than I expected, and I can see an inflection point if this trend continues."

Imagine what will be accomplished in the next few years.

Reduced duration of annual planning cycle from 4 months down to 2 weeks. In 2016 simultaneously facilitated annual planning (strategic and financial) process for 3 global organizations. 

DATA ENGINEERING & VISUALIZATION: Developing business telemetry system; responsible for acquisition, modeling, and analysis of product, cost & revenue data.   Using MS Excel, Tableau and R programming, I developed automated indicators that communicate large data-sets in a concise visual format that simplifies problem identification, pattern recognition and trends over time. SYSTEMS ENGINEERING: led team to develop a system for executive oversight of Intel’s spending at higher education institutions (nearly 10,000 transactions/year) while streamlining the approval process with automated digital signature (2-3 approvals / transaction). Responsible for evolving tools, data models and process methodologies in across 13 organizations.

Led stakeholders from 8 business groups to define a common process and secure infrastructure for recycling non-silicon, pre-production computing hardware; process rolled-out globally. 

Worked with senior engineers in Intel's 6 product groups to develop a common minimum-dataset and planning process for product design (Landing Zone process implemented in HSD-ES and Jama)

MANAGING a team of systems engineers that integrate Intel's vertically-silo'd data for cross-organizational, product-focused data visualizations. In first 3 months, team integrated 10 data sources and published online dashboards to meet the needs of 9 different, multi-organizational teams. Also developing central portal for architectural product specs; enabling easy access by downstream product designers, validators & marketing.

Operations Manager Specializing in Data  & Efficiency

PROJECT ANALYST MANAGER (3 years): Managed small teams (4-7 direct reports and up to 3 indirect reports) of projects analysts supporting Intel technologies and server CPUs. Responsible for coaching team in project controls disciplines as well as managing customer expectations of standardized tools, processes and deliverables. 

PROJECT ANALYST (4 years): Responsible for creating and managing large product teams’ schedule, risk management, and indicator solutions; specialized in schedule management. Led architecture & deployment of 23 schedule management solutions. Largest single schedule deployment (9 connected schedules) increased efficiency by reducing update process to just 10% of that on previous projects, while decreasing overall size of the program schedule to 15% of previous program. Simultaneously supported 2-9 schedules & risk management & indicator systems, weekly indicator production and regularly analysis used to escalate critical path options & resolution.

Project Controls Analyst and Manager

PRODUCT MARKETING: Owner of server software development platform's communication materials; responsible for managing vendor relationships, schedules, costs and deliverables Reduced costs ~33% while maintaining the Intel & SDP brand integrity. Produced more than 30 individual pieces (posters, brochures, CDs, white papers, reference manuals, etc.) & directed the assembly of 13 unique media packs across the 3 programs

EVENTS: 43% growth in Intel® Developer Services event-registered users in 2003 by migrating IDS presence in event booths from a kiosk to floating registration demo. Grew 3rd party tools presence in Intel booths from 0 to 40% in 2002 and organized development of strategic co-marketing materials. Produced the first “technology days” forum (engineering training in xml) under a shrinking budget with 3X the expected audience. Event resulted in budget guidelines, BKMs and metrics for following SSG events

RESEARCH: Key contributor to $147K research of SW development trends and market requirements for development environments. Owner of vendor interactions, project schedules and standardization of the interview questions for consistent data gathering across product lines and time, minimizing time investment and maximize data utilization. Research prompted change in SSG’s key enabling products’ design, implementation and marketing. 

TECHNICAL MARKETING: Demonstrated value of Intel’s security hardware to Security ISVs, received 100% commitment. Contributed to the Intel® HW Random Number Generator (RNG) whitepaper & security software application development kit. Provided post-launch support for the Intel® HW RNG. Key contributor & editor in the development of the OPSD Guardian Security Program including the creation of requirements documentation & presentation to management for approvals and drove competitive analysis, ISV selection & ISV disclosures. Created “real world” usage demo.

Led 18 stakeholders from 7 different product groups in consistent use of Intel’s Landing Zone data model and methodology: responsible for cross-organizational agreement on a common process, common data model and consistent evolution of both.

DATA VISUALIZATION – I create comprehensive data infrastructure from dirty data and disparate sources then compose graphically compelling indicators. Scripts and macros used to improve production time and data reliability. Also have experience in the collection, cleaning, modeling, mastering, and analysis of data. 

LIFE & BUSINESS COACH – I help others systematically achieve their goals by listening and simplifying transformation of thoughts and habits. Coached 7 employees to PM certification and more than 200 individuals to improved financial state.
