I'm sick for the second time this year, and January isn't even over yet. 🤧


At the beginning of the year, I had flu-like symptoms for the first full week of the month. 

I was still in my hibernation mode though, so I stayed in bed and was just thankful that it was a slow, quiet start to 2026.

Though, I'll admit, this being the second year in a row that I've started on the back foot, I was a little frustrated.

And to be under the weather again, is discouraging [I say as I type this from my bed 😞].

But I'm trying not to be hard on myself.
Because I'm listening to what my body needs.
I've started slow instead of racing right out of the gate.
I'm being intentional with my time and my energy levels.

And the way things are going these days, is it any wonder our physical and mental health are taking a toll?

I wouldn't actually be surprised if the news I'm consuming, the emotions that I'm feeling, and the turmoil in and outside of myself is directly related to my current state, twice over.

I'm feeling it in every way.

I’ve worked in fast-paced media, helped grow a SaaS company from $0 to $10M ARR, signed sustainable six-figure deals, and covered leadership and board-level strategy as a journalist. But… I’ve also faced burnout, been signed off sick, stepped back, and rebuilt a career and life that aligns with my values. Coaching helped me do that. 

My career began in journalism, writing real life features for a national women’s weekly magazine before moving into business journalism as an Editor. Then I transitioned into tech, joining a SaaS scale-up where I eventually led Customer Success as Vice President. In late 2023, I started my coach training. 

Alongside my business, I serve as a Board Trustee for purpose-led organisations focused on social equity, creativity, and mental health, including Age UK Ealing, Mud Station Pottery, and Phoenix Enterprises. 

Proudly neurodivergent and passionate about mental health advocacy, I’m an Advisor for the charity Mind, and the NHS. Both roles enable me to reflect on my own challenges with mental illness, and help improve support services for the good of others.

Turn the clock back exactly a year today 🕒

... I was less than 24 hours from breaking point.

On 7 January, I was urgently signed off sick from work.

Six weeks later, I resigned from a company I’d spent eight years building a customer success career in.

So much changed after that:
Our plans totally altered 
We rented out our house
Moved into a self-converted camper full time
Stayed in some dreamy places
I started my own business, became a Board Trustee, and began working with mental health organisations including the NHS and Mind.

It was a total reset.

You can totally change your environment. BUT you still carry the mental health challenges with you. 

They don’t magically vanish. 

I don’t think I ever truly believed they would just disappear. But maybe I'd hoped.

What I’ve learned is that recovery and change take courage, time, and patience. Reflection. A support network. And it's forever ongoing. 

Back to work today. And this is what's on my mind.

"New Year, New..." meh.

My birthday is on the 1st of January, so I totally get why Jan is a great time to come up with lots of ambitious resolutions, goals, targets... whatever we want to call them. 

And yes, while I will be setting some "challenges" for myself in 2026, I am framing them as investment. Investment in myself, rather than a "new start" or a "new me". 

Here are my three tips for investing in yourself (all free btw):

1) Reflection. 

One thing the start and end of a year makes us do is reflect. But why wait 365 days to do it?

Every month I reflect on the previous month: what went well, what could have been better, client wins, my wins, personal highlights, etc. I often do it at my lowest and it helps to change my perspective, i.e. I get some! 

I use Notion to do this. I have a planner with filters, and it's a recurring task. 

2) Make the bed... or set small, achievable habits.  

When I was really struggling with my mental health, my small habits were things like "get up", "brush my teeth", and "make the bed". 

On my journey to recovery, the daily tasks we often take for granted have been replaced by more ambitious things, like "long run/walk with Diego" (image below) as I have got a half marathon this year. However, some small goals like "make coffee mindfully" and "make the bed" have remained. 

There's something to be said for starting the day with consistent, small habits. I use Finch (finchcare.com) to help me with this. 

3) Ask for feedback, regularly. 

This could be from a family member, friend, partner, colleague, manager... really anyone in your life that you trust to help you with this investment in yourself. 

As part of a leadership programme I enrolled in, I had to ask five people to describe me in three words and then collect those words. What came back made me think differently. 

You could also ask things like... "What do you most admire about me?", "What's one thing that you think I could improve on?", or a more lighthearted: "If I was an animal, what do you think I would be?" 

Think about your objective, and that will help with the who and what you ask.
