At Forever 21, I was handed a morale crisis and a culture budget that was a cruel joke.
So I stopped asking for money and started getting resourceful by digging in the stockroom.

I resurrected the company sample sale...a mythical event dead for more than 5 years with one rule: 100% of proceeds were reinvested in the team.

This wasn't a liquidation strategy. It was a human capital strategy.

We turned excess inventory into a self-funding engine for humanity.

That "found money" paid for trans youth fashion shows, meals during the LA fires, and celebrations that actually mattered.

But the real ROI wasn't in the dollars. It was in the moments colleagues connected through their found treasures. It was in the rebuilt trust, the inside jokes born in a stockroom, the collective pride of building something for us, by us.

The lesson for leaders right now is brutal and beautiful: When resources are thin, you don't need to invent something new. You need to reactivate something old.

Mine your company's nostalgia. What ritual did people love that you stopped doing? What existing asset can you repurpose? 

Stop waiting for a budget to approve your humanity. Engineer it from within.

Your team's culture doesn't just happen. It's absorbed, molecule by molecule.









This year, my leftover New Year’s tres leches cake tasted faintly of onion.

The culprit? Chemistry.

When I put leftover chopped onion in the refrigerator, it released volatile sulfur compounds into the air.

Those molecules didn’t just float...they actively settled and were absorbed by the cake.

The cake didn't choose the flavor.

The environment imposed it.

This isn't just a kitchen fail.

It's a leadership principle.

The people you hire are your organization’s volatile compounds.

Their attitudes, ethics, and unresolved conflicts don't stay contained in their role.

They evaporate. They circulate in the closed system of your team. They settle on projects and are absorbed by your culture, changing the flavor of everything.

Last week's post was about culture. This one is about power.

Relaunching the sample sales at Forever 21 and Lucky Brand created a self-sustaining budget. But the true victory wasn't the money...it was the sovereignty.

In corporate, your "allotted budget" comes with invisible strings. Your boldest ideas get strangled by approvals and "that's not how we do it."

My hack? Become a profit center. Yep, even if my role was technically housed on the HR team.

When you generate your own revenue stream, you rewrite the rules. "No" loses its power.

That money wasn't corporate's; it was ours...earned by the team, for the team.

It created a pocket of democracy inside a rigid system.

And with that power, we voted with our dollars.

We didn't just fund parties. We funded our principles.

By the end, 96% of my vendor budget was directed to woman, queer, Black, and Brown-owned businesses. We turned learning into action, and allyship into economic policy.

The lesson is clear: You cannot beg a broken system for change. You have to build a financial lever big enough to move it.

Stop asking for a seat at the table. Build your own table, and make them pay rent.
