NORTH AMERICAN DATA CENTER PROJECT OF THE YEAR

Huge congratulations to Crusoe on winning North American Data Center Project of the Year at the Data Center Dynamic Global Awards 

The award recognises Crusoe’s 1.2GW Abilene AI Factory in Texas. 

Purpose-built to support Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) and, in many people's view, it marks a very clear line in the sand for what “next-gen” data centre infrastructure now means.

A few things really stand out:

Scale at speed...

Delivering Phase 1 of a 1.2GW campus in ~12 months is a step-change in delivery velocity.

High-density, liquid-cooled by design...

Direct-to-chip liquid cooling baked in from day one, not retrofitted. This is infrastructure designed explicitly for AI workloads, not adapted for them.

Vertical integration as a competitive advantage...

Crusoe’s in-house manufacturing arm, Crusoe Industries, removed supply-chain drag by building critical electrical equipment themselves. 

That’s how you hit “ludicrous speed” without compromising quality.

1. DayOne Data Centers raises $2bn+ to accelerate hyperscale expansion
DayOne Data Centers has secured over US$2bn in Series C equity, one of the largest private raises the sector has seen.

Headquartered in Singapore, DayOne continues to scale across Europe and APAC to support AI and cloud workloads.

The round was led by Coatue Management, with backing from Indonesia Investment Authority.

My take: Capital is consolidating behind platforms that can deliver speed, density, and repeatability at hyperscale. Execution capability now matters more than ever.

2. Vertiv maps the next era of AI-ready data centers
Vertiv published its latest Frontiers Outlook, identifying four macro forces and five technical trends shaping new builds and retrofits.
1. Extreme rack densification and gigawatt-scale campuses
2. Higher-voltage DC power architectures
3. Energy autonomy & on-site generation
3. Digital twins cutting time-to-token by up to 50%
4. Liquid cooling becoming mission-critical
Insights led by Scott Armul.

My take: The data center is no longer a building, it’s a unit of compute. 

Power, cooling, and controls talent will be the constraint.

3. Nvidia’s CES comments reshape cooling economics
Following CES, NVIDIA outlined next-gen chips capable of running on much warmer liquid, enabling free-cooling in some climates.

UBS analysis by Amit Mehrotra suggests upside for cooling towers and dry coolers.

Potential beneficiaries include Vertiv and Modine Manufacturing Company.
Mechanical chillers aren’t disappearing, but hybrid designs are the future.

My take: Cooling isn’t going away, it’s fragmenting by workload, geography, and architecture.

4. Microsoft leads on nature-positive data center strategy
A new report from Arbonics ranks Microsoft highest for integrating land restoration into European data center development.

6,400+ hectares of land protected
77,000+ trees planted across Europe
Projects cited in the Netherlands, Ireland, and Spain

Other operators assessed include Google, Meta, and Apple.
Report commentary from Lisett Luik.

My take: ESG is moving beyond carbon. Land, water, and biodiversity are becoming board-level considerations for site selection.

5. Virgin Media O2 partners with NTT DATA on circular IT
Virgin Media O2 has agreed a three-year programme with NTT DATA and n2s.

40,000+ IT assets to be responsibly decommissioned
Focus on material recovery and circular economy outcomes
Supports UK data center decarbonisation goals

My take: Sustainability now spans build, operate, and decommission; talent needs to follow that lifecycle too.

Final thought...
Capital, compute density, power strategy, cooling innovation, and sustainability are converging fast. The operators and vendors winning in 2026 will be the ones who can integrate all five — and build teams that actually know how to deliver them.

DIRECT LIQUID COOLING... FROM PILOT TO PRODUCTION

At the Equinix Co-Innovation Facility (Ashburn, VA), Flex has deployed an integrated rack-level direct liquid cooling (DLC) solution designed for AI and high-density compute.

Key facts:

• Single-phase DLC integrated into an OCP ORv3 rack (rack, power, cooling end-to-end by Flex)

• JetCool SmartPlate system enables closed-loop liquid cooling without external CDUs

• ~15% reduction in IT power consumption

• Up to 90% reduction in water usage

• Up to 50% lower cooling power demand

• Supports cooling loads approaching 300kW per rack

• Coolant inlet temperatures up to 70°C

The deployment demonstrates how operators can transition from air to liquid cooling without major facility redesign, while improving energy and water efficiency for AI and HPC workloads.

From a talent and delivery perspective, this increases demand for experience across:

 • Liquid cooling design & commissioning
 • Rack-level mechanical / thermal integration
 • High-density AI infrastructure operations
 • Power-constrained campus optimisation

Worth watching closely as AI density continues to rise.
