The most interesting thing about Swiss Mining Institute wasn’t the venue, the food, the presentations, but it was the collective confidence.

Umar Rafique and I spent last week at the Swiss Mining Institute in Zurich, and the energy across the event was refreshing. Coming from tech, where AI and tokenization create this constant pull forward, metals and minerals now feel like they’re developing that same underlying conviction.

One thing that struck me early was how many companies had secured funding. And there was sense that the industry finally has room to breathe.

You could feel that in the conversations. People spoke about their projects with real pride, but there was also an openess to do more. A genuine appetite to modernise, tell better stories, and use tech more deliberately. 

For a sector often seen as traditional, it felt like the first time in a while where leaders had the capacity (and the intention) to focus on more than just the ground itself.

A big thank you to everyone we met and a huge shout out to Sarah Bouchisse and her team for organising such a seamless and engaging event.

Zurich was stunning as always, and The Dolder Grand hotel… timeless.

(6 quintillion dollars).

That’s the estimated value of minerals inside a single asteroid belt.
And the Moon may become the launchpad that gets us there.
That is the foundations of what Jim Keravala is building.

He is the CEO of OffWorld, first popped up on my radar in a Deloitte report on the future of mining, featured for deploying autonomous robotic swarms with Maaden, the Saudi mining giant.

As you can imagine that caught my attention.

A couple of LinkedIn DMs, good timing with our Mining Meets Digital webinar… and next thing you know, Jim was on our panel sharing a perspective most people can’t even fathom.

Fast-forward a few months later (yesterday), Umar Rafique, myself, and him, are sitting together over a curry and a pint at Dishoom, conversing on an array of topics.

One being mining, specifically: “If we were to do it from complete scratch, with the future in mind… what could that look like?”

Because most heavy industries (mining, oil & gas, energy) are still anchored to the past. Same mental models. Same top-down culture. Same bias: “This is how we’ve always done it.”

What OffWorld is building flips that completely.

Robotic swarms piloting on Earth right now.
A platform built to operate on the Moon and beyond.

The underlying logic is straightforward:
Critical minerals are finite.
Demand is compounding (AI, defence, electrification, clean energy).
'More of the same' mentality eventually fails.

So the question becomes:
What happens if robots do the hard, dangerous work underground, underwater, and off-world, and humans move up the stack to design, supervision, and strategy?

After our 2nd pint and a couple of spicey starters, the conversation naturally drifted into civilisation and the future.

We’re explorers by nature. Conquerors by instinct.
You see that same energy from Elon Musk, recently talking points about Moon Base Alpha, data centres in orbit.

And before anyone calls this fugazi… look around.

Humanoid home robots like 1X’s NEO are already being pre-sold for $500/month. It’s the “first iPhone” era of robotics, slightly clunky, clearly V1, but everyone can see where the curve is heading.

Once that curve compounds, entire value chains get rebuilt.

That’s what makes this mission compelling:

🔹 First principles: If you weren’t bound by legacy infrastructure, how would you design mining today?

🔹 Full value-chain rethink: Exploration → extraction → processing → production → commerce.

🔹 Earth → Moon → Asteroid Belt: Prove it here, then scale off-world.

Real disruption rarely comes from incumbents.
It comes from the outsiders, the outliers, the people who never internalised the belief that something “can’t be done.”

Some stories need to be told.
This is one of them.

Over the next two decades, $84T will move from Boomers to Millennial/Gen Z heirs, investors who think, act, and allocate very differently.

Umar Rafique and myself refer to them as the 'Apple and Crypto Generation'.

They’re digital-first, more likely to hold Bitcoin than bonds, and skeptical of legacy advisors. They weigh brand strength, use of technology, and customer experience as heavily as financials.

Where traditional investors lean on balance sheets, earnings calls, and broker notes, digital-native investors add new signals: brand experience, tech credibility, nano-influencers on X/Instagram, whitepapers, and AI-assisted tools that inform decisions.

Retail now sets the tempo - driving visibility, momentum, and perception.
It’s the butterfly effect in real time: a single post can shift sentiment and eventually move markets.

And yes, they influence institutions. Look at Bitcoin: retail pulled adoption forward; now you have spot ETFs and mainstream custody.

Yet most small caps on TSX, Nasdaq, or AIM still don’t speak to this cohort. The brand, the site, the story, the IR, built for yesterday’s buyer.

This isn’t a call to rename your company DogWifHat.

Stereotypes exist (meme coins and hype) and sometimes they’re true. But there’s a modern retail class that cares about design, clarity, and credibility. 

They source signal from social, validate insights in Discord and Reddit communities, use AI to run their own due diligence, and rally around clear narratives backed by real product/project progress.

If you’re public (or planning to be), build for them: distinctive brand presence, plain-English compelling narrative, proof of genuine innovation, always-on high production content, and investor experience that feels digital and AI-native. 

That’s how you earn attention and convert it into capital.
