5 reasons smart people get confused about their next level
 
1️⃣ They have too many good options.  
Nothing is broken, so choosing feels risky.
 
2️⃣ What got them here still works.  
It pays the bills, looks fine, and keeps life stable — just not satisfying anymore.
 
3️⃣ Every option feels expensive.  
Change the job → risk income.  
Start the business → risk comfort. 
 Slow down → risk image.
 
4️⃣ They keep waiting for things to “slow down.”  
But life rarely does at this stage.
 
5️⃣ They’re mentally tired.  
Even when they have time, they don’t have the energy to think clearly.
 
Feeling confused here doesn’t mean you’re failing.

This week, I felt completely flat.
 
No motivation. No direction. Just bored of my own life.
 
Here are 3 ways I wouldn’t recommend handling it:
 
1 - Push through with more work  
You think productivity will fix it. It won’t. You’re not tired from lack of output. You’re tired from lack of meaning.

2 - Distract yourself with plans  
Booking trips, starting projects, saying yes to everything. 
This just adds noise. It doesn’t solve the internal friction.

3 - Wait for it to pass  
You tell yourself it’s temporary. But if this feeling keeps showing up, it’s not a mood. It’s a signal.
 
This is how I’d do it instead:
 
1. Ask what’s missing — not what’s wrong.
 
• Money: Is this actually a money or growth problem?  
• Meaning: Do I still care about what I’m building?  
• Mastery: Are my thoughts and emotions running me?
 
2. Protect the silence. Don’t fill the void with people or plans. Sit with it. The answer is already there.
   
3. Make one small decision that feels true.  Not big. Not bold. Just honest.
 
Remember:
 
Flatness isn’t failure. It’s your system telling you something needs to shift.

2 harsh truths most successful people don’t like hearing:
 
1- Working harder won’t fix a life that’s slightly misaligned.
 
You can keep hitting targets.  
Keep getting promoted.  
Keep being “the reliable one.”
 
And still feel off.
 
Because effort isn’t the issue.  
Direction is.
 
2- Intelligence becomes a trap when you use it to justify staying the same.
 
You can explain why now isn’t the right time.  
Why it’s “strategic” to wait.  
Why this is just a phase.
 
And five years pass.
 
Not because you weren’t capable.  
Because you let your blind spots run the show.
 
At a certain level, growth isn’t about doing more.
It’s about resetting:
 
• how you evaluate decisions  
• what you tolerate  
• what you believe you deserve
 
That’s the real upgrade.
 
Not a new job.  
Not a new title.  
A new standard for how you operate.
 
If you feel the gap between what you built and what you actually want next — that gap doesn’t close with more effort.
 
It closes when you reset how you think and decide.

Early in my corporate career, 
I believed strong leaders absorb pressure.
So I did.

I filled decision gaps.
Clarified ambiguity others left open.
Carried risk quietly.

It worked - for a while.

Until I stepped into a role with broader scope and higher expectations.

What had made me effective before
no longer worked in the same way.

I wasn’t leading.
I was compensating.

And it was exhausting.

Senior leadership isn’t demanding only because of workload.
It’s demanding when ownership is unclear - especially above you.

When no one clearly holds the decision:
- meetings multiply
- alignment rounds repeat
- pressure rises quietly

The turning point for me was learning to say:

“This is mine.”
 Or
 “This is not.”

You deliver under pressure.
You adapt.
You stretch.
You make it work.

So the system keeps rewarding you — 
with more scope, more visibility, more responsibility.

From the outside, it looks like success.

From the inside, it starts to feel like:

When leaders try to step sideways or slow the pace, they often hear:
“𝘠𝘰𝘶’𝘳𝘦 𝘥𝘰𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘨𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘵.”
“𝘛𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘴𝘶𝘪𝘵𝘴 𝘺𝘰𝘶.”
“𝘠𝘰𝘶’𝘭𝘭 𝘧𝘪𝘨𝘶𝘳𝘦 𝘪𝘵 𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘭𝘪𝘬𝘦 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘢𝘭𝘸𝘢𝘺𝘴 𝘥𝘰.”

And that’s where things get tricky.

Because the question is no longer:
“𝘈𝘮 𝘐 𝘤𝘢𝘱𝘢𝘣𝘭𝘦?”

It is:
“𝘐𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘴𝘶𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘪𝘯𝘢𝘣𝘭𝘦 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘮𝘦?”

Transitions at this stage aren’t about escape.
They’re about 𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐥𝐚𝐢𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐲 𝐛𝐞𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐞𝐱𝐡𝐚𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐦𝐚𝐤𝐞𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐝𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐲𝐨𝐮.

𝐖𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐚 𝐭𝐢𝐭𝐥𝐞 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐯𝐞𝐬, 𝐰𝐡𝐨 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮?

Recently, I noticed someone introduce themselves at an event using a role they no longer hold.

Two years after leaving it.

It’s easy to judge this.
It’s harder to understand it.

For many senior leaders, a title is not just employment.

It’s identity.
Belonging.
Structure.
A way of locating yourself in the world.

When it disappears (especially unexpectedly) the nervous system doesn’t simply register a career change.

It registers loss.

And if that loss isn’t processed, people hold onto symbols instead.

The old LinkedIn headline.
The same pitch in networking conversations.
The invisible hope that things will return to how they were.

AI, restructuring and fast transformation will make these moments more frequent.

The real question is no longer:
“How do I protect my title?”

It becomes:
“Who am I when the external structure changes?”

Because leadership maturity is not measured when everything is stable.
It is measured when identity needs to evolve.

If you had to introduce yourself without your role, what would remain?

𝐖𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐬𝐚𝐲 𝐧𝐨𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠, 𝐩𝐞𝐨𝐩𝐥𝐞 𝐚𝐬𝐬𝐮𝐦𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐬𝐭.

In moments of instability,
employees don’t just look at the event.

They look at the response.

Layoffs.
Executive exits.
Safety concerns.
Strategy pivots.

Often what follows is… silence.

No acknowledgement.
No context.
No naming of tension.

On paper, operations continue.
Targets remain.
Town halls talk about vision.

But in conversations behind closed doors, 
a different narrative forms.

And here’s what silence does:

It doesn’t protect morale.
It erodes trust.

When uncertainty isn’t acknowledged,
people don’t feel reassured.
They feel exposed.

They start asking themselves:

- What isn’t being said?
- What else is unstable?
- Am I next?

Leaders sometimes believe:
“If we don’t amplify it, we stabilise things.”

In reality, maturity looks different.

You don’t need dramatic speeches.
You need grounded sentences like:

“This is a difficult moment.”
 “I know this affects people.”
 “We don’t have all answers yet,  
but we won’t pretend this isn’t happening.”

Leadership under pressure is not about projecting certainty.

It’s about holding reality without collapsing into it.

The real question is:

When instability hits your organisation,
do people experience clarity?

Or silence?

𝐘𝐨𝐮 𝐝𝐨𝐧’𝐭 𝐥𝐚𝐜𝐤 𝐨𝐩𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬.
𝐘𝐨𝐮’𝐫𝐞 𝐚𝐯𝐨𝐢𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐝𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧.

And you already know which one.

Maybe it’s:

- Saying yes to more responsibility when you’re not sure you actually want it
- Staying in a role you’ve quietly outgrown because it still looks good on paper
- Having a conversation you know will change the dynamic
- Leaving before burnout quietly makes the decision for you
- Admitting that what once excited you no longer does

Nothing is collapsing.

From the outside, you look steady.
Trusted.
Capable.

But internally, something is unsettled.

You keep telling yourself:
“𝘕𝘰𝘵 𝘯𝘰𝘸.”
“𝘓𝘦𝘵’𝘴 𝘴𝘦𝘦.”
“𝘐 𝘯𝘦𝘦𝘥 𝘢 𝘣𝘪𝘵 𝘮𝘰𝘳𝘦 𝘤𝘭𝘢𝘳𝘪𝘵𝘺.”

But clarity rarely comes from waiting.

And keeping the decision open is costing you:

- Energy.
- Decisiveness.
- The way your team experiences you.

It’s shaping how you show up - whether you realise it or not.

And the longer you delay it,
the more your organisation adapts
around a version of you
that you may have already outgrown.

At some point the question shifts from:
“𝘋𝘰 𝘐 𝘯𝘦𝘦𝘥 𝘵𝘰 𝘥𝘦𝘤𝘪𝘥𝘦 𝘯𝘰𝘸?”

to:

“𝘈𝘮 𝘐 𝘴𝘵𝘪𝘭𝘭 𝘤𝘩𝘰𝘰𝘴𝘪𝘯𝘨 — 𝘰𝘳 𝘫𝘶𝘴𝘵 𝘱𝘰𝘴𝘵𝘱𝘰𝘯𝘪𝘯𝘨?”

If one specific decision came to mind while reading this, that’s the one.

𝐀 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐦𝐨𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐝𝐨𝐞𝐬𝐧’𝐭 𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐚𝐮𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐲.
𝐈𝐭 𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐨𝐬𝐞𝐬 𝐢𝐭.

I remember a senior leader telling me, two weeks into his new role:

“𝘐 𝘵𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘨𝘩𝘵 𝘐’𝘥 𝘧𝘦𝘦𝘭 𝘣𝘪𝘨𝘨𝘦𝘳.
𝘐𝘯𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘢𝘥, 𝘐 𝘧𝘦𝘦𝘭 𝘮𝘰𝘳𝘦 𝘸𝘢𝘵𝘤𝘩𝘦𝘥.”

Nothing had gone wrong.
But suddenly:

- his pauses felt longer
- his decisions felt heavier
- his agenda felt political
- and his usual confidence felt… slightly shaken

This is what most people don’t say out loud.

The title changes overnight.
The internal recalibration doesn’t.

In the first weeks of a bigger role, something subtle happens:

You become more careful.
You prepare more.
You replay conversations.
You try to get alignment before taking a stance.

Not because you’re incapable.

Because visibility amplifies self-doubt before it amplifies authority.

And people are already assessing:

- Can they hold pressure?
- Can they make clean decisions without over-consulting?
- Can they tolerate disagreement without softening too quickly?

A bigger title doesn’t stabilise you.
It magnifies whatever is already there.

And if that recalibration doesn’t happen early,
hesitation quietly becomes your leadership signature.

If you’ve recently stepped into a bigger role (or you’re about to) the real question isn’t:

“𝑯𝒐𝒘 𝒅𝒐 𝑰 𝒑𝒓𝒐𝒗𝒆 𝒎𝒚𝒔𝒆𝒍𝒇?”

It is:

“𝑾𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒗𝒆𝒓𝒔𝒊𝒐𝒏 𝒐𝒇 𝒎𝒆 𝒊𝒔 𝒔𝒉𝒐𝒘𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒖𝒑 𝒖𝒏𝒅𝒆𝒓 𝒕𝒉𝒊𝒔 𝒍𝒆𝒗𝒆𝒍 𝒐𝒇 𝒆𝒙𝒑𝒐𝒔𝒖𝒓𝒆?”

If this phase feels familiar, message me “𝐋𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐥.”
This is the window where stabilisation is easier (and far less costly) than correction later.

𝐖𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐧 𝐢𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐩 𝐛𝐚𝐜𝐤, 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐩𝐚𝐮𝐬𝐞.
The lead of Anthropic’s Safeguards Research Team recently resigned, warning that “the world is in peril.”

Whether one agrees with his conclusion or not is almost secondary.

What struck me was something else.

He spoke about how difficult it is to let values truly govern actions - especially under commercial pressure.

This is not only an AI story.
It is a leadership story.

In fast-moving industries, three forces collide:
- speed
- scale
- incentives

And values can quietly move into the background.

Not because leaders lack integrity.
But because pressure is relentless.

AI doesn’t just test technical capability.

It tests moral clarity.
It tests long-term thinking.
It tests whether leaders can hold complexity without defaulting to urgency.

The real risk is not the technology itself.

It’s leaders making high-impact decisions without a space to think clearly about consequences.

The question is not:
“Is AI good or bad?”

It is:

“How are we making decisions about it and under what pressure?”

𝐇𝐢𝐠𝐡 𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐢𝐬 𝐚𝐧 𝐚𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐭.
𝐔𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐥 𝐢𝐭 𝐢𝐬𝐧’𝐭.
At senior levels, the traits that got you promoted
can become the reason you plateau.

Here are three signals I see often:

1️⃣ 𝐘𝐨𝐮 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐝𝐞𝐟𝐚𝐮𝐥𝐭 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐛𝐥𝐞𝐦-𝐬𝐨𝐥𝐯𝐞𝐫.

You’re in bigger meetings.
With more scope.
Yet when something breaks, they still look to you.

And you step in.

Because you can.

What once proved your capability now limits your team’s growth.
And keeps you operational when you should be strategic.

2️⃣ 𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐯𝐚𝐥𝐮𝐞 𝐢𝐬 𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐚𝐯𝐚𝐢𝐥𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲.

You respond fast.
You absorb pressure.
You make yourself useful.

But your calendar is full of things only you 𝘶𝘴𝘦𝘥 𝘵𝘰 need to own.

At this level, leadership isn’t about being the most reliable firefighter.

It’s about deciding which fires are no longer yours.

3️⃣ 𝐒𝐥𝐨𝐰𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐝𝐨𝐰𝐧 𝐟𝐞𝐞𝐥𝐬 𝐝𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐬.

You’ve built an identity around momentum.

So when you consider:

- delegating more,
- narrowing focus,
- redefining your role,

It feels like underperforming.

Not because it is -
but because your self-worth is still wired to output.

𝐓𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐢𝐬𝐧’𝐭 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐝𝐨𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐥𝐞𝐬𝐬.

It’s about shifting from being rewarded for effort
to being valued for judgment.

Left unexamined, high performers don’t burn out because they’re weak.

They burn out because they never updated the identity that got them here.
