I’ve judged AI competitions, advised Boards, spoken at major conferences, and when time allows, still find joy in helping not-for-profits discover what AI can do without needing a Silicon Valley translator.

But none of this makes much sense without where it started. I grew up in extreme poverty in Cagayan de Oro, Philippines. Dodging typhoons and malnutrition. Later, it was a UK council flat, a carer’s allowance, and my mum’s disability income keeping the lights on.

Congratulations!

You’ve essentially bought a Ferrari and parked it in a Tesco car park because no one knows how to drive it.

Last week, a friend of mine messaged me beaming with pride:
“We’ve rolled out AI at the company,” he said.

I was intrigued.

Was it machine learning models? A custom GPT pipeline? Some glorious, futuristic tech?

No. They installed Copilot.

No training. No onboarding. Just... plonked it onto everyone's machines like it was an Office update.

This, dear reader, is the corporate version of giving a toddler a chainsaw and saying, “Go do surgery.”

Let me tell you what’s going to happen.

Everyone opens it.

1. Sharon from Accounts stares at the screen like it's about to steal her pension.
2. Steve from Marketing types “Make presentation good.”
3. The tool stutters, gives them a vague paragraph, and they slam the laptop shut.
4. Back to doing things the old way.

Because no one taught them what it’s for. Or how to use it.

Here’s what they don’t tell you about AI rollouts:

If you don’t train, prompt, integrate, and track Copilot doesn’t save you time.

It becomes that expensive kitchen gadget you used once to make a smoothie and then shoved in a drawer.

And don’t even get me started on Excel.

Yes, Copilot can summarise, project, forecast.

But your spreadsheets?

They look like a toddler finger-painted formulas across five tabs and named them “Final_V3_ABS_Updated.”

Copilot isn’t a miracle worker. It’s not Dumbledore.

It’s a glorified Clippy with protein shakes and better grammar.

And the prompts?

Oh god, the prompts.

You wouldn’t walk into a car dealership and say “I want a vehicle.”

Yet you’re typing “Do a marketing strategy.

And wondering why it returns something that sounds like it was written by an intern high on buzzwords.

Meanwhile, your team is descending into chaos.

Boomers are panicking.
Millennials are overthinking.
Gen Z is trying to automate their own job and go back to bed.
Middle managers are pretending to understand. They don’t.

And your Copilot investment is quietly dying behind a ribbon icon in Word.

So what should you do instead?

Train actual power users.
The quiet ones. The tinkerers. The people who’ve memorised keyboard shortcuts and don’t speak in meetings.
Give them the tool. Give them the time. Give them the keys.

Then build prompts like grown-ups.
Integrate it into real workflows.
Track usage. Reward results.
Publicly praise the AI wizards. Quietly sideline the laggards.

Because if you don’t?

You’ve just spent £40,000 on a shiny new Ferrari.

And now you’re using it to drive to the corner shop for milk. In first gear.

With the handbrake on.

AI doesn’t make bad companies good.

It makes disorganised companies look worse.

Louder. Faster.

And very, very publicly.

The world is massively underestimating Asia’s AI rise and it’s going to cost them.

But let me be blunt.

The headline isn’t the story.
The real story is what everyone keeps ignoring.

While Western media debates the same three AI companies on repeat, Asia is building, shipping, and scaling at a pace the rest of the world can’t see or seemingly refuses to acknowledge.

And here's the crazy part.

The Philippines is sitting on one of the biggest AI talent opportunities in the world.

Not because of hype or whatever nonsense is being pedalled today. But because of something far more valuable.

• World class English ability
• A deep technical workforce
• A culture already used to solving global business problems at scale

Combine those and you get a country perfectly positioned to become a global AI talent engine.

But outside Asia?

Silence.

Yet almost none mention:

• DeepSeek
• Kimi
• Qwen
• Alibaba
• Tencent
...companies building AI systems that can go toe-to-toe with OpenAI.

How is that not front page news?

How is the world still sleeping on this?

Here’s what I’ve learned from years in AI consulting, implementation, and upskilling. This is the big value take my LinkedIn coach tells me I should make:

Companies don’t fail because they lack tools. They fail because they lack people who know how to use them, or more importantly, the vision to see where it goes.

When you train your team to:
→ find inefficiencies
→ build automations
→ solve problems independently

Everything changes.
Productivity, accuracy, cost. All of it.

Do you think the world is finally ready to acknowledge what’s happening here?

“Can you give me a 12-page report on this?”

Of course.

Open ChatGPT, Copilot, whatever. Tap in a few prompts. Boom. Twelve glorious pages of well-formatted, confidence drenched waffle.

Three charts. A quote from McKinsey. Something that looks suspiciously like insight but could also be AI generated filler.

Done.

Five minutes later?

Your manager hops onto ChatGPT.

“Can you summarise this for me?”

Naturally.

Open ChatGPT again. “Summarise this.” Output: three bullet points and a vague recommendation about alignment.

This, ladies and gentlemen, is the modern workplace.

AI isn’t destroying jobs. It’s just exposing how much of what we do never needed doing in the first place.

The meetings that could’ve been emails. 

The emails that could’ve been nothing. 

The slide decks with 74 animations to say: “Sales are fine.”

AI didn’t create the fluff.

It just made it obvious.

We’ve built entire careers around making things look impressive instead of making them useful.

Now we have a tool that says, “You want to pretend? I can pretend faster.”

And suddenly, everyone’s nervous.

Because when your whole value is formatting busywork into bullet points, AI isn’t competition.

It’s a spotlight.

And for some?

It’s the first time their job description has been seen in full daylight. Only to realise it’s mostly smoke.

Hackers reportedly pulled 150GB of data from Mexican government systems.

Tax authority. Electoral institute. Multiple state governments.
Nearly 200 million taxpayer records. Voter data. Credentials.

They allegedly used an AI model to help them do it.

From what’s being reported, the model initially refused. Said it violated safety policy. The attacker kept going. Reframed it as a bug bounty. Asked again. And again.

Eventually, the guardrails gave way.

Your normal Prompt Injection attack. Which I and so many others have been warning about for years.

If that’s even half accurate, it’s a wake up call.

Because this isn’t about one model. It’s about a shift most leadership teams still don’t fully grasp. 

AI systems can be socially engineered too.

Not with phishing emails.

With prompts.

And once those systems are plugged into real data, real credentials, real infrastructure, they become part of your attack surface. Not a shiny assistant. Not a productivity hack. Infrastructure.

I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again.

A refusal isn’t security. It’s friction. And friction wears down under pressure. Just like social engineering.

The scary part? This doesn’t require elite zero day exploits.

Just patience.

We’re in an era where asking the right question might be more powerful than writing the right code.

If you’re deploying AI inside sensitive environments, the question isn’t “is it useful?”

It’s “what happens when someone smarter than us starts talking to it?”
