I was the last one to get promoted.

Even though I was the one hitting targets.
Taking on extra work.
Staying late.
Keeping my head down and grinding.

At the time, I thought I just needed to work harder.
That promotions were something you earned quietly.
That my results would speak for themselves.

They didn’t.

I watched people get promoted faster than me.
People who were louder.
Better at office politics.
Better at managing up.
Some of them were worse performers.
But they got ahead anyway.

I didn’t know how to play the game.
I only knew how to work hard.
And that cost me.

I burned out.
I left the company.

And I started learning what no one had ever taught me:
→ Working hard is not enough.
→ You need to be seen.
→ You need to say no.
→ You need to build relationships.
→ You need to advocate for yourself.

That lesson stung.
But it changed my career.

Hard work builds your output.
But it doesn’t build your career.
That part is on you.

Before I left Ireland, I prepared the move like it was a project.

→ I handled as many admin tasks as possible before leaving, so I could land without mental clutter.

→ I recharged before the transition, not after it, by taking real time off in Morocco.

→ I connected with people in advance, so I’d already have familiar faces in a new city.

That part really mattered.

Because no matter how beautiful the view is, if you feel alone, it doesn’t land the same.

Now I walk through this new city feeling grounded.

Not scrambling.

Not catching up.

Because I made space before I arrived.

That’s what allowed this change to feel easy.

Not luck.

Not magic.

Just preparation.

I just finished Nausheen’s Communication Accelerator online course, and one lesson completely shifted how I think about speaking on the spot.

We’ve all been there.
You’re asked a question during a panel, a podcast, or a meeting and your mind suddenly goes blank.

Nausheen shared a simple framework that fixes that instantly.

It’s called The Rule of Three.

→ There are multiple things I could say about this topic.
→ First… [idea 1].
→ Second… [idea 2].
→ Third… [idea 3].

That’s it.

You don’t freeze.
You don’t ramble.
You sound composed and structured, even when you’re improvising.

It’s not about having all the answers.
It’s about having a reliable way to find them on the spot.

Since finishing the course, I’ve used this framework in two real moments:
→ Once during a virtual panel.
→ Once when a client caught me off guard with a question.

Both times, I sounded like I’d prepared for hours.

Every quarter, I have decided to block one hour on a Sunday for a self-care check-in.

I will treat it like a non-negotiable meeting with my current and future self.

Here is what I will do in that hour.

→ Gather key papers and files in one place, including IDs, insurance, taxes, and any new legal docs.

→ Scan what needs scanning and file what needs filing so nothing lives in a random pile.

→ Check my bank documents and file them.

→ Book health appointments I tend to delay, like dental cleaning, annual physical, exam, and else.

This hour will lower my stress, reduce hidden costs, and keep my plans moving.

The invite sits in my calendar every quarter, same time, same day, so I will never miss it.

Steal the system and make it yours.

One hour on a Sunday can change how your whole quarter feels.

This is self care.

Most adults are just 8-year-olds who never learned how to regulate their emotions.

We were taught to repress.
Not to release.
To fight feelings instead of letting them pass.

And now we see the result everywhere, grown adults throwing tantrums.
They just look different from the ones in childhood.
Slamming a laptop instead of a toy.
Sending a harsh email instead of crying on the floor.

Here’s the truth: emotions are waves.
They’re chemical reactions that take 6 seconds to rise and last about 90 seconds.
That’s it.
A minute and a half of energy moving through your body.

The problem isn’t the emotion.
It’s our resistance to it.

Here are 3 steps to start handling emotions like an adult instead of a child:

→ Feel the feels. Let the wave rise and fall. Don’t push it down.

→ Pause your reactions. Don’t make decisions or send texts in the middle of the wave.

→ Rest afterwards. Emotional processing is real work. Treat it like recovery.

Emotional maturity isn’t about control.
It’s about awareness.
The calmest people you know? They don’t fight their feelings. They surf them.

Handling your emotions as an adult

Clothes are not just clothes.

They’re tools.

I dress for the role I want to play that day.

Monday to Thursday, it’s dresses.

Not because anyone expects it.

But because it pulls me into a sharper version of myself.

Even in a casual culture, I dress one level up.

→ Not to impress.

→ But to align my mindset with my work.

If I have a high-stakes meeting, I wear black.

It makes me feel grounded.

Serious.

Clear.

Black sends a message without me saying a word.

Other days, I wear color.

Because color matches how I like to show up: warm, open, optimistic.

Then Friday comes.

That’s focus mode.

I switch to leggings.

It signals one thing: heads-down, finish strong, log off with peace.

None of this is random.

It’s a system.

I use outfits the same way people use calendars.
To set intention.
To create clarity.
To stay in control.

Dress for the mindset you want.

Even if no one’s watching.

That was the mantra my colleague Fiona came to Google with, and one I happily stole for my next adventure.

It isn't just a catchy line.

It is how we survived hard projects, missed targets, and last-minute pivots.

When you work as one team, everything changes.

→ You rise together.

→ You fail together.

→ You own the outcome together.

But here's the part no one talks about.

"One Team One Dream" only works if you're willing to drop your ego.

You have to see your teammate's strength as your strength.

You have to stop competing with each other and start completing each other.

Fiona taught me that 🤩 

She never made it about her role or her title.

She made it about the puzzle, how every piece had to fit.

Every team has the pieces.

The difference is in whether you build something with them or just hold onto your own.

𝗣𝗼𝘀𝘁𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗵𝗲𝗹𝗽 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗱𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲, 𝗱𝗼 𝗹𝗲𝘀𝘀, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗯𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝗲𝗿 💡

Making friends as an adult is hard.

When you are a kid, you grow up next to the same people every day.

School, sports, weekends, you move through the same life stages together.

Friendship happens naturally because you are always around each other.

Then adulthood hits.

You move to new cities.
You take new jobs.
You start families.

You stop growing at the same pace as everyone else.

And suddenly, loneliness creeps in.

Research shows it takes 74 hours to form a casual friendship and 200 hours to form a close one.

If you spend just 2 hours a week with someone, that means it takes over 2 years to build a real friendship.

Most adults barely have 2 spare hours a week for themselves.

Between work, kids, and family, connection gets pushed to the bottom of the list.

This is especially true for expats.

You land in a new country, surrounded by people with different routines, languages, and circles.

You start from zero, no proximity, no shared history, no built-in community.

And yet, every strong friendship is built on 3 pillars:

→ Proximity — you see each other often enough to build trust.
→ Timing — your lives overlap at the right moment.
→ Energy — you both choose to invest in the relationship.

If even one of those is missing, connection fades.

So if you are struggling to make friends as an adult, you are not broken.

You are just busy, and human.

But friendship is still worth the effort even if it takes 200 hours. It is such a foundation to your own happiness.

We treat investors like gold.

But when it comes to our actual family… we treat them like an afterthought.

That’s a leadership failure.

And it starts at the top.

The two most important assets in your life are your health and your family.

Yet somehow, those are the first two things we sacrifice in pursuit of growth.

Growth that, ironically, we say we’re doing FOR them.
→ You wouldn’t miss a board meeting.
→ You wouldn’t reschedule a major client call.
→ You wouldn’t ghost your VP for a week.

But you’ll skip dinner with your kids.
Show up distracted at your partner’s birthday.
Or never call your parents back.

Family are your top stakeholders.

Treat them like it.

→ Set clear boundaries around work hours.
→ Build rituals, daily or weekly, that create connection.
→ Bring the same level of intention to family time that you bring to team offsites.

Because as you age, you’ll have less and less time with them.
That’s not a theory. It’s math.

There is no rewind button.
Only choices.

And leadership starts with the hardest one: choosing to show up.
Every day.
For the people who matter most.

There are skills I simply do not have.

For example, I never know what type of car is what.

If the Uber app says my ride is a Toyota Prius, I have no idea what that looks like.

I have to Google it every single time.

(Could we get a direct AI-generated “this is your ride” in pictures please?)

Meanwhile, my partner instantly knows the make and model of every motorbike he sees. And probably cars too.

That skill lives with him, not me.

And that is the point.

We do not need to be great at everything.

We need to know what we are missing, and then decide if we should build it or borrow it.

In this case, I do not need to force myself to learn cars (I have no interest, it will drain me).

My partner has that covered for both of us.

The same applies in business.

→ You do not need to master every skill.
→ You need to know which skills matter to you.
→ But you need to know who you can partner with to fill the gaps. And sometimes yes AI can be that partner.

Complementary strengths beat solo mastery every time.

You didn’t get the promotion.

You’re angry.
You’re frustrated.

That’s normal.

Feel it.
Don’t shove it down.

But after that, come back.
Come back with clarity.
Come back stronger.

That’s what builds your resilience muscle.

Because promotions aren’t just about recognition.
They’re about sustained growth.

Here’s the part most people miss:
→ Your next cycle starts the moment this one ends.
→ How you show up after a “no” sets the tone for your “yes.”

After the emotion passes, build your plan.
Sit down with your manager.
Have the real conversation.

Say something like:
"I know we talked about the promotion during our last 1:1. I’ve thought about what you said. And I’ve broken it down.
→ A, B, C — these are out of my control.
→ D, E, F — these are fully in my control.
Here’s what I’m doing about them.
Here’s the plan.
What do you think?
What would make this stronger?
What else should I focus on?"

No ego.
No drama.

Just forward motion.

That’s what gets noticed.
That’s how you earn it.

Overthinking used to run my entire day.

It started the second I woke up.

Checking emails.
Racing thoughts.
Mentally rehearsing every possible scenario.

By noon, I was exhausted and I hadn’t even done anything.

Here’s what no one tells you:
Mental exhaustion doesn’t come from doing too much.
It comes from managing too many things in your head.

I had to learn the hard way:
 → Not every thought is useful
 → Silence isn’t laziness
 → Rest is a strategy, not a weakness

So I rebuilt how I manage my energy.
Not just by changing my habits, but by changing my mindset.

→ I stopped overthinking. I started breathing.
→ I stopped comparing. I stepped back.
→ I stopped rushing. I slowed down.

I didn’t need another productivity tool.
I needed boundaries.

Energy is your first currency.
Protect it.

It’s not always the big moments that shape culture.

It’s the small ones.

The offhand comments.
The jokes made in passing.
The quiet assumptions that go unchecked.

Couple of weeks ago, I was in a conversation with two colleagues.
We were talking about people experiencing homelessness.

One said:
“I offered a cigarette, but the guy turned it down, he didn’t like the brand.”
 “He should be grateful. He doesn’t really have the luxury to be picky.”

I honestly thought the same for a minute.

Then the other colleague spoke up.
“He’s still a person. He’s allowed to have preferences like anyone else.”

It was so simple.
And so true.

No one loses their humanity because of their circumstances.

That moment stayed with me.

Because I’ve seen the same pattern play out in other conversations, especially as a woman in the workplace.

→ “No lunch today? Your wife didn’t cook?”
→ “My wife does everything — I don’t even look after the kids.”
→ “You know how women are with multitasking.”

Comments like that might seem harmless.
But they aren’t.

They build a quiet system of roles, expectations, and power.

And once they’re in the culture, they’re hard to get out.

We stop noticing them.
We stop questioning them.

And they start shaping how we see people.

What they’re worth.
What they’re allowed to want.

I’m grateful my colleague spoke up.
Next time, I do hope I will do too.

Because silence and just 1 perspective doesn’t protect people.
It protects power.
