Certified Professional Career Coach (CPCC) | Job Search Strategist 

Back in college my résumé used to be a duplicate replica of my elder brother’s résumé. Apparently he had used it while appearing for college placements and landed a job in HCL. Submitting a résumé is the first step of the process so for obvious reasons his résumé received all the credits. 

So I decided to follow his trail. The confidence that I felt back then is still fresh on my mind. But sadly the résumé that worked for my brother did no wonders for me. If anything it backfired, an HR grilled me for 15 minutes asking for a logical explanation as to Why have I written an objective statement when it was quite obvious that I was looking for job, and why have I given a declaration when it is a personal document not legal?

I wondered “How can this go wrong, this HR knows nothing, my brother got placed using this résumé”. Without able to think of any logical answer, my head almost exploded. I had no idea what to say. I simply stared back blankly while accepting my defeat. 

After 7 years on the other side of the table as a Certified Professional Résumé Writer, I now know how my childhood confidence was based on a fake assumption. Copying and pasting content from a successful professional’s résumé does not guarantee a job; it is all “You.” 

From a mere piece of paper to possessing the power of an irresistible introduction, the résumé has come a long way. The day-by-day growth of technical advancements has opened new scopes, formats, and contents, but the basic logic remains the same.
