If you want to attract clients for your agency who truly get you…
 
Don’t be the unapproachable, ivory tower thought leader.
 
The one who doesn’t seem to understand what your audience cares about.  The one who is easy to ignore because of it.
 
Be the relatable expert who feels like a real person.  The kind of person your clients would love to have in their corner.
 
Sometimes that means letting people in a little.
 
Because that’s how trust is built.
 
And once there’s trust, people are far more ready to engage with your expert posts.

I can never read my own handwriting.
 
But this weekend, it worked.
 
I try to avoid working on weekends.  But since I took a couple of days off last week for my son's school holiday, it was catch-up time.
 
Nothing like a bit of deadline pressure.  My talk slides have to be submitted this Friday.
 
When coaching my clients on their LinkedIn strategy and content, we explore how they can show up as relatable experts for their ideal clients.
 
And I often use my MCode insights to help them step out of their comfort zone.
 
Because showing up as a relatable expert takes courage to:
 
• Listen to your audience
• Share stories that show you get them
• Show up with your personal brand values as an agency founder
 
This model has gone from a quick scribble to something I’m genuinely proud of. And it happened fast, thanks to Imogen and Simon. 🙌🙏
 
Sometimes the messy first version is exactly what gets you there.
 
Same on LinkedIn. Getting started is the hardest part. You have to allow yourself to scribble before you polish.
 
Are you more of a scribble first or polish first kind of person?

If you're struggling to pick a niche for your agency's LinkedIn strategy, this post is for you. Money worries made me tackle this faster than most.

My first niche idea came from frustration. I had just faced a draining redundancy battle before I set up my business. 

All I wanted to do was help women who found themselves in a similar position.

But I quickly learnt I had no audience in that space.
So I couldn’t attract any viable leads.

And good intentions don’t pay London-high nursery fees.
My son was a toddler.
My redundancy savings were running out. 
And I didn't want to become a stay-at-home mom. 

So I switched direction for my niche faster than most. Looking back, I'm glad that money worries forced me to experiment with my next niche idea. 

Because I know deciding this often feels out of your comfort zone. You might even try to delegate this decision to ChatGPT. That won't work.  

When building your agency's LinkedIn strategy, you DO need to pick a niche. 

LinkedIn can find you an audience that is right for your expertise. But it needs to see clearly who you help and what you help with.

Niching doesn’t mean you have to turn wunderbar opportunities away. It means you give LinkedIn something specific to work with.

Start with these questions to learn if your niche idea makes commercial sense:

- Can you identify and build an audience who can afford your agency's services?

- Can you become even better at the thing you deliver so you can charge a premium?

- What conversations do you want to be part of, linked to your area of expertise and what your audience needs help with?

PS. Are you still refining your agency's niche, or is it crystal clear?

This may sound harsh.

But it might help if you read this ⬇️

Not everyone is watching your every move on LinkedIn.

It’s like when you launch a new website for a client.
At first, it barely gets any attention.

So don’t let your LinkedIn Berlin Walls of Fear:

“What will people think of me?”
“This post isn’t perfect enough.”

Stop you from posting.

So what if you get content crickets at first?

It’s okay for a post to flop. See it as an experiment. Learn from it.

If you make a spelling mistake, so what? You can edit it later.

Building momentum requires taking that first step.

One of my favourite moments as a coach is seeing LinkedIn shy agency owners and tech founders take that step. When we build their LinkedIn strategy and habits together, it usually turns out much easier than they expected 💜

Are you still letting the thought, “What will other people say?” stop you?

You’re not posting for your peers.

You’re starting conversations with the people your agency is just right for.

So let go of the need for perfection.
Turn down the volume on the fear of being judged.

This is not an exam. No one is waiting to catch you out.

This week carnival is celebrated across Germany. As a child, I loved dressing up. Being a witch was one of my favourites 🥳
 
Mum would spend evenings sewing DIY costumes and I would proudly head out with my older cousin Conny, both of us transformed into magical creatures.
 
Dressing up was so much fun.
 
But on LinkedIn? If you get it wrong, it is expensive.
 
The most important decisions about you are made when you are not in the room.
 
When someone checks your profile.  Before a pitch.  Before a proposal is even opened.
 
They are not evaluating your expertise first.
 
They are asking:  Is this someone like me?  Will this agency get us?  Can we trust them?
 
Creating trust and connection through your LinkedIn presence is not a nice to have. It is a deciding factor in purchasing decisions. And switching agencies already feels risky.
 
I encourage my clients to show up as relatable experts.
 
People their ideal clients can trust.  People who make them feel seen.
 
That does not mean oversharing.
 
Show how you think.  Show what it is like to work with you.  Show how you make your clients feel.
 
If your presence feels overly polished, overly corporate, or lacking empathy, you are wearing the wrong costume for LinkedIn.
 
When they land on your profile, what do they see?
 
PS. Did you love dressing up as a child? What was your favourite costume?

This was the moment the penny dropped.

In 2018, I spoke at Cambridge Social Media Day.
My talk? How to get more clients through personality-led content.

I’d left my corporate job two years earlier, and the ueber formal tone was still baked into me. But I wanted the audience to pay attention.

So I took a risk.
I shared a personal story.
My childhood crush on David Hasselhoff.

We loved him.
The talking car. 
The slow-mo Baywatch runs.

Somehow, he became a powerful symbol of freedom for East Germans.
And yes, we ueber adored him.

Corporate Nicole never led with stories.
Especially NOT with stories that would still feel a little embarrassing. 

She led with data and logic.
Always making the business case. 
Always ueber buttoned up.

But I knew that wouldn’t land with this audience.
So I went all in. And it was scary.

Years later?
People still remember The Hoff revelation.
Not the stats. Not the slide deck.

If you’re an agency founder trying to land your ideal clients here on LinkedIn, stop hiding behind Ivory tower-style thought leadership posts.

Let your audience in. Be a more relatable expert. Share your stories. This is your stage too.

Viral or valuable. Which one would you choose?

Many agency and tech founders judge LinkedIn success by likes and comments.

But when we start working on their LinkedIn mindset and they begin posting regularly, they discover something surprising.

A post can look quiet and still be doing powerful work.

Because LinkedIn is not only about public engagement.

Often the real impact happens in quieter moments.

A private message.

A thoughtful comment you left on someone’s post.

Or when a prospect reads your post and remembers your agency weeks later. Wunderbar! 

So here are three things I remind agency and tech founders when we build their LinkedIn strategy.

• Treat every post like an experiment
• Ask questions that invite easy replies
• Balance expertise with relatable stories that show who you are

You are not trying to impress everyone or chase vanity metrics with your LinkedIn strategy. You are trying to reach the right clients for your agency or tech business.

And when the right people notice your posts or your comments, that is what really counts.
