Who's been your unexpected champion this year?

After 3 years running my own business, these are a few of the things I appreciate most:

🔵 Becoming friends with other solopreneurs-turned-friends (who would have thought talking about work would be so energizing 😅)

🔵 Meetings only when they’re actually needed 
(love a good async collab — Nicole Kayla, you’re brilliant at this!)

🔵 Providing economic opportunity for others
(such a rewarding feeling)

🔵 Sharpening my negotiation and business acumen skills
(these are skills I can take with me wherever)

🔵 Being able to WFH in silence
(an introvert’s dream)

🔵 Watching my team and revenue grow
(it’s so cool to see everyone’s direct impact on the bottom line)

Don’t get me wrong, there’s plenty that’s hard about running RISE Learning Solutions… but today (and most days), I try to focus on the positives because I’m so lucky to do what I do. :)

Ever had someone bump into you in passing and you end up saying “sorry” ? Have you apologized for simply following up on an email? 

Why do so many of us apologize for things when we’ve done nothing wrong? 🥲 (I’m guilty of it, too!)

The words you use at work shape how people see you — and how you see yourself.

One small habit that silently weakens your presence?
→ Overusing “sorry” when there’s no need to.

I wrote an article for CNBC about this exact thing. In it, I shared how over-apologizing sends a message you may not intend: that you don’t fully believe in your value, your ideas, or your right to be in the room.

Here are a few quick swaps you can start using today:

1. Instead of: “Sorry I’m late.”
Say: “Thanks for waiting.”

2. Instead of: “Sorry to follow up.”
Say: “I’m checking in to see when you plan to review the document.”

3. Instead of: “Sorry, can I add something?”
Say: “I’d like to add a quick thought.”

Small changes, big difference.

Your language is one of your strongest tools for building credibility and influence.

As someone who studied journalism and has spent my entire career in communication/content/marketing roles, I was totally nerding out at getting the chance to speak at Ragan Communications and PR Daily's Future of Communication Conference in Austin last week! 🤩

If you’ve ever talked yourself out of applying because you “weren’t qualified enough,” this is for you.

My best hire didn’t match the job description — yet she outperformed everyone who did.

I shared this story with CNBC because it surprised a lot of people: my strongest candidate didn’t match the “ideal” résumé. But she showed me something far more valuable.

Here are the 3 things my first full-time hire, Meagan, did that helped her rise to the top:

1️⃣ She showed HOW she thinks, not just WHAT she’s done.
Instead of matching every bullet point, she gave real examples of solving similar problems in different contexts. Her examples came from different roles, but the underlying skills mapped perfectly.

2️⃣ She didn’t try to “play it cool.” 
While others tried to seem casually interested, Meagan made it clear that this wasn’t just a role she could do — it was the role she wanted. Her enthusiasm wasn’t over the top; it was energizing. It made me excited about her.

3️⃣ She followed up after applying. 
Out of 1,000+ applicants, fewer than 10 reached out on LinkedIn. Fewer than 5 messages stood out, including Meagan’s. Meagan’s message was short and thoughtful, and it moved her towards the top of my list. 

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗹𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗼𝗻 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗷𝗼𝗯 𝘀𝗲𝗲𝗸𝗲𝗿𝘀:

↳ What exactly am I trying to learn, and why does it matter right now?
↳ Write it down down: “I’m learning [X] so I can [Y] by [Z date].”

2/ Do a brutally honest skill audit

↳ Where am I truly starting from? Beginner? Intermediate?
↳ I rate myself on a 1–5 scale, then identify 1–2 focus areas for the week.

3/ Source high-quality content (not just what's trending)

↳ I follow 2–3 trusted experts who are 5 steps ahead (not 10).
↳ I choose one main format to learn from (podcast, YouTube, course, etc.).

4/ Build a non-negotiable learning routine

↳ I block 10–30 minutes daily on my calendar like it’s a real meeting.
↳ Write down key learnings every time + 1 action you can commit to.

5/ Create social accountability

↳ I tell a friend (or post publicly) what I’m working on.
↳ I set a tiny consequence if I fall off (like buying them lunch or sending $20).

Here are 3 things to gain career clarity (using Ikigai)

This Japanese concept of Ikigai changed my life.

Ikigai means ‘your reason for being’ and it’s both an idea and a way of life.

☝️ Step 1: Answer these 4 questions

↳ What am I GOOD AT?
↳ What do I LOVE DOING?
↳ What does the WORLD NEED?
↳ What can I BE PAID FOR?

↳ PASSION (What I love + What I’m good at)
↳ MISSION (What I love + What the world needs)
↳ PROFESSION (What I’m good at + What I can be paid for)
↳ VOCATION (What the world needs + What I can be paid for)

🤟 Step 3: Find your IKIGAI

Cross-reference the four categories from Step 2 and note any similar themes.

What I learned about life.

It’s not meant to be easy.

It’s hard, uncomfortable, even painful at times.

↳ I was bullied growing up.
↳ I was fired from a job I loved.
↳ I lost my mom to cancer when I was 25.

I could’ve stayed angry but I chose to start over.

And by giving myself another ‘do over’:

✔️ I have amazing friends & mentors
✔️ I landed dream jobs at dream companies
✔️ I built a 6-figure business doing what I love
✔️ I found the love of my life (I made the first move)

It’s never too late to rewrite your story.

And know what else?

Your environment matters more than you know.

People thrive when things are clear.

Teams thrive when systems replace chaos.

→ Do I feel challenged and stimulated in my current role?

3. Do I align with the values of the company?

→ Do our shared beliefs and goals resonate?

4. Am I being valued and recognized for my work?

→ Do I feel appreciated and rewarded for my contributions?

5. Do I enjoy working with my team and my boss?

→ Are there positive relationships and support at work?

6. Am I being underutilized or overextended?

→ Is my workload balanced and fulfilling?

7. Am I feeling burnt out or stressed?

→ Is my mental and emotional health being affected?

8. Am I aligned with the company's direction and goals?

→ Do I see a clear path for my career growth within the organization?

9. Am I considering alternative career paths or opportunities?

Better to admit you walked in the wrong
door than spend your life in the wrong room. 

At 23, I was jobless, broke, and lost.

At 30, I started a side hustle with a 9-5.

At 32, I quit my 9-5 to bet on me. 

At 33, I surpassed over $1M in net worth

I didn’t waste my life hoping things would change.

I made a decision: to take matters into my own hands. 

I was serious about changing the course of my life.

And I was willing to start over, fail, suck at something I knew nothing about.

So I quit my dream job at Figma. I invested thousands of dollars in coaching.

I learned everything I could about sales, marketing, and personal branding. 

I invested in myself so I can be the *best* version of myself.

And because of that, I built a life I’m truly proud of.

One that would make my 10-year-old self SO happy 🥹.

I understand that happiness isn’t given to you.

It’s something you have to want badly and fight for every. single. day.

Too many people waste their potential and best years waiting:

For that perfect moment. partner. job. opportunity (list goes on).

But no one is coming to save you.

Only you can do that. 

The person you want to became is built on the choices you make TODAY. 

Because if not you, then who?
