She offered up the office in case I needed good internet (I did for a virtual event), reserved a room for said event and even got a monitor brought in, and took me out to lunch with the team (thanks, Marc Monday!).

Who's been your unexpected champion this year?

After 3 years running my own business, these are a few of the things I appreciate most:

🔵 Becoming friends with other solopreneurs-turned-friends (who would have thought talking about work would be so energizing 😅)

🔵 Meetings only when they’re actually needed 
(love a good async collab — Nicole Kayla, you’re brilliant at this!)

🔵 Providing economic opportunity for others
(such a rewarding feeling)

🔵 Sharpening my negotiation and business acumen skills
(these are skills I can take with me wherever)

Ever had someone bump into you in passing and you end up saying “sorry” ? Have you apologized for simply following up on an email? 

Why do so many of us apologize for things when we’ve done nothing wrong? 🥲 (I’m guilty of it, too!)

The words you use at work shape how people see you — and how you see yourself.

One small habit that silently weakens your presence?
→ Overusing “sorry” when there’s no need to.

I wrote an article for CNBC about this exact thing. In it, I shared how over-apologizing sends a message you may not intend: that you don’t fully believe in your value, your ideas, or your right to be in the room.

Here are a few quick swaps you can start using today:

1. Instead of: “Sorry I’m late.”
Say: “Thanks for waiting.”

2. Instead of: “Sorry to follow up.”
Say: “I’m checking in to see when you plan to review the document.”

3. Instead of: “Sorry, can I add something?”
Say: “I’d like to add a quick thought.”

Small changes, big difference.

Your language is one of your strongest tools for building credibility and influence.

As someone who studied journalism and has spent my entire career in communication/content/marketing roles, I was totally nerding out at getting the chance to speak at Ragan Communications and PR Daily's Future of Communication Conference in Austin last week! 🤩

If you’ve ever talked yourself out of applying because you “weren’t qualified enough,” this is for you.

My best hire didn’t match the job description — yet she outperformed everyone who did.

I shared this story with CNBC because it surprised a lot of people: my strongest candidate didn’t match the “ideal” résumé. But she showed me something far more valuable.

Here are the 3 things my first full-time hire, Meagan, did that helped her rise to the top:

1️⃣ She showed HOW she thinks, not just WHAT she’s done.
Instead of matching every bullet point, she gave real examples of solving similar problems in different contexts. Her examples came from different roles, but the underlying skills mapped perfectly.

2️⃣ She didn’t try to “play it cool.” 
While others tried to seem casually interested, Meagan made it clear that this wasn’t just a role she could do — it was the role she wanted. Her enthusiasm wasn’t over the top; it was energizing. It made me excited about her.

3️⃣ She followed up after applying. 
Out of 1,000+ applicants, fewer than 10 reached out on LinkedIn. Fewer than 5 messages stood out, including Meagan’s. Meagan’s message was short and thoughtful, and it moved her towards the top of my list. 

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗹𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗼𝗻 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗷𝗼𝗯 𝘀𝗲𝗲𝗸𝗲𝗿𝘀:

When I was VERY early in my career, I had to make an expensive decision on behalf of the business.

I was SO worried about it!

Tons of money.
Literally minutes to make the choice.
No time to call my boss for approval.

I decided to spend the money, and trusted that my boss would be ok with it once I finally talked with her.

Y'all... It was paying $50 for valet parking.

But at that time in my life, $50 for parking seemed absurd.

At that time in my career, I wasn't well-versed in how businesses expenses and vendor agreements worked.

And I was genuinely worried about confirming with a vendor that they could pay $50 for valet parking because they were running late to film a customer testimonial during a big conference.

My boss was thrilled that I made the decision to spend the $50 on faster parking vs. potentially losing the filming slot with the customer.

Now as a seasoned marketer, I cringe at my younger self, thinking how silly it was for me to even worry about $50 valet parking. 

OF COURSE that is a no-brainer call!

But... does your team know when it's a no-brainer decision? 

Do they trust that their leaders will back them up when they need to make real-time "expensive" choices?

Do they have a framework for when to escalate?

If you're rolling your eyes at folks making bad calls, it's worth taking a step back to understand whether they have context and trust to make good calls.

Because it's ACTUALLY expensive to do things cheap.

"Which bakery did this come from?"

"Wait, YOU made these!?!"

"You should open a bakery..."

People say this to me frequently when I bring treats to the office, the theater, birthdays, etc.

There's some AMAZING commercial-scale bakeries out there, AMAZING home bakers out there, and everything in between (including my amateur baker status).

After baking treats and buying treats over the years, I've started applying my marketing nerdery to the questions of perception, compliments, trust, etc. in this space.

And so, I'm curious...

In the comparison below, which option would you pay more for?

How much would you pay for a dozen of the cupcakes shown in the picture?

Assume that each option has comparable cost of goods sold, etc. to not bias the results too much, and you can make whatever assumptions you want about where the cupcakes came from, who took the pictures, if they're AI-generated vs. human, etc.

We know we gotta measure.
But we know we can't measure everything.
And without everything, it kinda feels like we have nothing.

The problem is that we're so focused on capturing every. little. detail. in a way that we can easily show in a dashboard, but we miss the big opportunities that actually help people move through a buying process.
