It’s January 6th, and a lot of us are slowly coming back to life.

However, a slow start doesn’t mean small plans.


I’ve been quieter for the past two weeks as I took time to enjoy delicious food, spend time with fabulous friends, and relish in quality cocooning time. 

But the switch has flipped.

I might be starting the year slowly, but don’t confuse slow with small. I’m going big this year.
This year is going to be outrageously good.

Here’s what’s on my radar for 2026.

Personally, I’m making space for:

• One longer nature walk each month somewhere in the Netherlands
• My first long-haul travel and time outside Europe and North America
• Giving my travel blog more time and effort
• Scrapbooking more 

Professionally, I’m focused on:

• Building The Marketing Meetup community with Grace and Isaac
• Launching my own series of events (stay tuned)
• Experimenting with video content
• Supporting clients with content writing while taking on more content strategy work

But Rome wasn’t built in a day.
So while I may be off to a slow start, I’m quite ready to go big this year.

10 minutes for a carousel.

I’ve just spent 10 minutes creating this carousel in Storyline.
Ten minutes. Eight of them on stock images.

Yes, I invested time in building a function that works reliably and lets me create carousels whenever I need them.

I did it once. I won’t do it again.

The function stays with me.

Carousels are no longer a problem.

And here’s the key point: this is exactly how scalable work looks.

Who wants to stop rebuilding the same interactions again and again and start creating their own library of functions?

You can do this.

I’ll teach you.

Last time, we talked about optimization in Storyline using JavaScript functions. But let’s dig deeper.

A function is not the finish line. It’s a semi-finished product. My main insight: code is a construction kit (Captain Obvious).

Once you understand how a script works, it doesn’t really matter what you change, an object’s color or its size. The logic behind updating properties is the same.

So what does that give you?

Instead of searching for a ready-made script for every specific task, googling ‘how to do X,’ or generating code with AI dozens of times, you just take an old function of yours, pull out the micro-component you need, and adapt it to a new task in a couple of minutes.

Or you spend two hours yelling at the screen and tearing your hair out because the code should work, but it doesn’t. And why? Because you missed a comma or a quote and Storyline doesn’t highlight syntax errors.

Anyway…

JavaScript in Storyline, when you’re building modern e-learning products, is not about “cool visual tricks.” It’s about a system you can grow and reuse across dozens of courses.

The video proves the point. The foundation is the same as last time: same carousel, same screen indicators. I didn't reinvent the wheel. I just took the same principle I used for the illustration dots. 

One principle, different applications. 

The result is on par with a modern web app. 

All within good old Storyline.

Instructional designers have long been expected to do more than design learning.

We are designers, developers, and “make it fast” specialists at the same time.
And yet, for some reason, every project still starts from zero.

Interactive mechanics are not unique.

Content is.

A carousel is a carousel.
Flashcards are flashcards.
An accordion is an accordion.

The question is not how to build one more.

The question is why you still don’t have your own.

Design for the sake of design? Nope.

There are situations where you might even study a plain text Word document just to learn something. But that’s a very rare case, and it requires extremely high motivation.

On average, most courses are simple click-through presentations with basic design. For an average corporation, that is usually enough.

But there are also really good courses. The kind where people actually learn and are left with a feeling that the experience was genuinely pleasant. And design is part of that.

Every case is unique. But if there is a choice - and that’s what we should aim for - I always choose Ozlem’s approach.

Do learners care about our beautiful designs?


In one of my recent posts, someone commented:

“Looks nice but do learners really care about the things we get excited about as instructional designers and e-learning developers?”

Let’s be honest. I’m not creating e-learning to impress learners with my design skills. What I care about is making the experience feel seamless, intuitive and natural for them.

But

I still spend time and effort making my designs beautiful, because it makes me excited about my work.

For years, I worked in roles that were just that: jobs to make a living. Now I’ve found something different. I’m genuinely excited by every new design, every useful layout I build, every small JavaScript tweak that creates a smooth animation. I show up to work every day with real enthusiasm.

I’m not trying to romanticise it but these are just my honest thoughts.
