GSX (Now Martello) is a SAAS Microsoft Office 365 Monitoring Solution . I took over the North American operations when there were only legacy maintenance contracts with a retired product.

We grew recurring revenue exponentially including contracts with many Fortune 500 companies.

We also closed a multi-million dollar opportunity with the largest Microsoft reseller in the world.

•	Developed short and long-term sales strategies to gain market share, uncover new sales opportunities and increase revenue. This included a robust LinkedIn strategy using LinkedIn automation tools and campaigns as well as driving channel revenue by embedding our solution into their services. We also had frequent webinars and attended trade shows to generate additional leads.
•	Performed monthly sales forecasting and competitive analysis to determine product performance levels and need for new product developments.
•	Analyzed past sales data and team performance to develop realistic quarterly sales goals.
•	Worked directly with marketing to implement lead generation software, including sequences, to automate the follow-up with outstanding leads.

Binary Tree - Powering Enterprise Transformations

Binary Tree is an ISV in the Microsoft ecosystem.
-  Built and managed channel relationships with multi-million dollar revenue streams.  Global partners include Microsoft, Avanade, Altos, and HPE.
-  Managed a global team of channel and alliances professionals.
-  Implemented a global version of impartner.com, the premier Partner Relationship Management Platform.  As a result, we were able to exponentially grow our partner base.
-  Created partner sales enablement tools and training classes to allow our partners to sell directly to clients.
-  Actively participated in the vendor selection process of a new Learning Management System.

Seamgen is one of the fastest growing mobile design and development services firms in Southern California. 

•	Participated in discovery, scoping, estimation, and presentation to prospects, including gathering requirements, formulating delivery approach, and developing the proposal/SOW.
•	Managed teams consisting of project managers, developers, and creative designers to ensure that customer objectives and expectations were met, including Blue Shield of California and Intel.

ScrollMotion is a custom mobile applications company.

At ScrollMotion, I grew three of the largest brands in the world into multi-million dollar accounts.  

Additional Accomplishments -

•	Participated in discovery, scoping, estimation, and presentation to prospects, including gathering requirements, formulating delivery approach, and developing the proposal/SOW.
•	Managed engagements from sale of service to delivery at accounts including State Farm, Hallmark, and General Electric.
•	Managed an account team to ensure timely delivery of projects, most of which came in on budget/were profitable as outlined in the SOW, including working with the client project manager to identify/resolve issues that impacted project scope and/or timeframe.
•	Led presentations at Executive Steering Committee meetings.
•	Identified and helped close additional projects within large enterprise organizations.  As an example, we ended up building over 50 different mobile applications for GE, including an iPad app for their Appliances salespeople.  The app was referenced in the Wall Street Journal as a “game changer”, including a quote from Jeff Immelt, GE’s CEO. 
•	As most of the projects were fixed bid, carefully monitored scope of the SOW and issued change orders, when necessary.
•	Led implementation of Salesforce.com. for the company. 
•	Worked directly with ScrollMotion’s development team to gather product requirements and managed the product roadmap to meet our customers’ needs.
•	Created successful partnership/channel sales with OS providers, wireless services providers, and OEMs including Apple, Microsoft, Intel, others.
•	Developed pricing policies, including volume discounts and terms and conditions, for high-profile customers and channel partners.
•	Worked directly with Chief Legal Officer in developing complex legal agreements.

Managing Director for Resources Global Professionals, a publicly traded, $550 million global consulting company that spun out of Deloitte. In one fiscal year, we grew the practice over 500%, making the Kansas City office one of the top three fasting growing offices in the company.

•	Developed new relationships with over 20 new Clients, including several Fortune 1000 companies such as H and R Block and Kansas City Power and Light.
•	Acted as engagement manager for a Fortune 500, financial services Client.  The Client had several issues that needed to be restated and the project had over 40 consultants.
•	Acted as engagement manager for a large, publicly traded mortgage company.  This Client had limited time to become SOX compliant.  We had over 10 consultants in Internal Audit and over 15 consultants in IT.
•	Continually developed new business by identifying target clients, networking, meeting with target clients, and selling all Resources’ service lines. 
•	Cultivated and expanded existing business relationships through frequent communication and regular client visits. 
•	Sold projects to new and existing clients, clarified the scope of projects with clients, identified business solutions, presented qualified Associates to the client, and negotiated billing arrangements. 
•	Assisted in the recruitment of Associates, conducted interviews and assessed skill set and competencies of candidates and negotiated Associates' compensation.

🤨Paranoia🤨

As I reflect on my brief year-and-a-half CiviSocial journey, I’ve encountered an issue that needs addressed:

There’s a deep suspicion of “vendors.”

💰 Not the big companies with six-figure sponsorship packages.

🏢 Not the legacy consulting and marketing firms that have been around forever.

I mean startups. 
New voices. 

Like every legacy entity, #LocalGov needs ongoing innovation. But so many groups that preach education and innovation to their members are structurally resistant to welcome those most likely to bring it.

Why?

Perhaps it’s because the culture of the profession is built on risk-avoidance.

Or maybe it’s perception, the idea of appearing “captured” by private companies.

I have also heard horror stories of friends being burned by predatory sales tactics, and deceptive consultants. Bad apples that spoil the barrel require everyone with a vendor badge be treated as a threat.

Some organizations have built their revenue models on predictable sponsors, and competitors threaten these generous marketing budgets. 

Safe speakers who come with familiar presentations and non-challenging concepts feel more comfortable and predictable than outside voices with fresh ideas.

It’s easier to maintain the status quo, and present the familiar than admit the landscape is more challenging than it was when we first assumed our leadership roles. 

Change is by its very nature uncomfortable. 

But what’s lost by preserving comfort, and protecting the status quo? Progress. 

Real transformation almost always comes from the edges, not the center.

It comes from small voices with huge hearts and zero ego. People who genuinely seek positive change all share these key qualities.

If we want healthier conversations, less toxicity, and stronger public trust, then the ecosystem has to get more comfortable welcoming new ideas, even (or perhaps especially) when they come from outside the usual circles.

Innovation in local government isn’t a threat.

It’s a desperately needed resource that’s being hidden, well intentioned or not.

The Cable TV Effect

We need to stop treating Facebook as the center of the social-media universe in #localGov.

Data still shows large numbers of < 50 population with Facebook accounts. But there’s a major distinction most reports fail to understand. 

People didn’t delete Facebook, but they aren’t treating it as a social hub.

Pew Research makes this clear:
👧👦 Teens have largely abandoned the platform and 18–29 usage is declining fast

🧔‍♂️👩‍🦳 30–49 mostly stay because of family check-ins, Messenger, and Marketplace

👴👵🏻 50+ now dominate actual “social” activity

Meta counts anyone who logs in for any reason as an “active user” checking a birthday, browsing Marketplace, or using Facebook Login for another app.

Cultural relevance ≠ monthly logins.

It’s the cable-TV effect:
Tons of households still “have” cable. Almost nobody under 40 actually watches it.

If your goal is to reach core demographic residents, attract talent, build trust, or actually grow positive engagement, Facebook isn’t where the focus should be. 

❌ And cross posting from Facebook to Instagram is “cringe” as someone in their 30’s might say.

📣 “The Triad” platforms with real cultural momentum for under-50 residents are visual, video-first, and personality-driven: TikTok, Instagram, YouTube.

Cities won’t win by doubling down on the past. They win by learning, and building in the place where their constituents are headed. And the best news of all? Triad platforms are FAR LESS NEGATIVE than the Facebook and Nextdoor ecosystems.

🤨Websites🤨

As CiviSocial just updated its website (check it out, feedback welcome), I am struck by how much focus this 1990s technology still receives from so many local governments.

Don’t get me wrong, I have nostalgia for what was the greatest decade to have been alive, but it’s astonishing how much time and energy #localGov communication dedicates to this space.

To illustrate, I’ll use my own recent web traffic on CiviSocial’s site:

67% attributable to social media
17% A.I. link-out and search 
9% non-A.I. linking (things like podcasts) 
6% direct load 
1% other 

So 2/3rds of my overall website traffic is originating on social media! 

When I compare my average daily website visits, they are 4% of my daily social media impressions. 

It’s so curious to review RFP’s for 2026 where “website” is the first item listed, followed by “graphic design”, “copy”, and “press outreach”. It’s like returning to the 1990s! 

Social media isn’t a secondary communication vehicle, it’s the main driver; the place where most people find information today. 

A little nostalgic video fun, and a serious plea to not let your communications strategy require you to adjust your VCR!

So I made one, well, kind of.

Never do it for the money…

Wise words from Steve Jobs who was worth over $100 million at 25 years old. 

But that wasn’t his why. He believed he was building something that would impact people, make lives easier and better, to innovate the world. 

There are many books written about the subject of entrepreneurs like Jobs and how they found success beyond anyone’s wildest imagination. The simple take away I’ve always embraced in my journey: “money follows”. 

In my media career, I focused like a laser on what the audience wanted and where they were going. First DVD, then streaming, now social media (and next AI). Advocating for these shifts often caused tension with my leadership who didn’t understand, but they came to trust me when the money followed.

One of the biggest mistakes early in my career was to leave an awesome job at a terrific company because someone offered to double my salary. Soon thereafter I took a different job making less money than before at another company, because the trajectory and mission of the business that paid so well was not aligned with my personal need to drive impact and make change. 

I’ve been blessed with so much, and my CiviSocial  journey is not about getting rich, earnings, or personal success. It’s about the product, the outcomes, the mission to help local governments lead the way in an era of difficult communications. To bridge understanding between those who serve and those they serve.

The death of Rob Reiner and his wife, allegedly at their son’s own hand deeply effected me this week. I never had the privilege to work with Reiner, though I did meet his father once long ago. There can be no tragedy greater than an immediate family member killing another. 

In this moment, politics should be the last thing we think about. Yes, the Reiners were very active and very outspoken. This should be celebrated as James Woods did in his remembrance of an old friend: 

“I think Rob Reiner is a great patriot,” Woods said Monday on Fox News. “Do I agree with some of, or many of, his ideas on how that patriotism should be enacted, to celebrate the America that we both love? No. But he doesn’t agree with me either, but he also respects my patriotism.

We must find a path back to civility as a nation. We must begin to see those who disagree with us as fellow patriots. This nation was born in deep disagreement, but the creation of America was beautifully about finding compromise and consensus: among the disparate colonies, among those who disagreed on matters of deep principle. 

I pray we find our way back to civility and conversation. Respect and reverence for the great gift that is life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
