If you're not considering dark social, you're making marketing decisions based on a lie.

Your analytics dashboard says Google ads drove 12 conversions last month. But that's not the whole story.

Your best customer forwarded your LinkedIn post to three colleagues in a Teams chat. Someone texted it to their business partner.

That partner shared it with his team. Two weeks later, he came across a comment you dropped on a post. That sparked him to ask a team member call you.

Your dashboard shows it as "direct traffic."

This is dark social. And it's breaking your attribution models.

Here are 3 principles every small business owner needs to understand:

1: Most sharing happens where you can't see it

Experts estimate that 84% of content gets shared through private channels. Text messages. Teams. Email forwards. Slack threads. None of this shows up in your tracking.

2: Attribution models assume linear journeys

Your tools think customers go from ad click to purchase. Reality? They screenshot your post, discuss it offline, see a comment you dropped on another post, then visit your site days later by typing your company name directly.

3: "Direct traffic" is mostly dark social

That spike in direct visits after you posted content? It's private shares and LinkedIn lurkers that you can't track.

Here's what you can do about it:

Action 1: Add "How did you hear about us?" to every form.

Make it a free text field (not a drop-down list). Required. You'll discover LinkedIn is driving deals your analytics missed. (this was a game changer for me)

Action 2: Use link shorteners with tracking.

You can use Bitly or Ow.ly to create tracking links for everything you share. When someone copies and pastes your link into a private message, you'll at least see the click.

Action 3: Watch for unexplained traffic spikes.

If a blog post suddenly gets 200 direct visits with no campaign behind it, someone's sharing it privately. That's your signal to create more content like that.

And I didn't even bring up AI in this post. But that brings in a whole other layer.

Your sales team is chasing intent signals. But the deal was already lost 6 months ago.

Here's the brutal truth most B2B execs refuse to accept:

You're tracking MQLs and web visits. You're chasing 3rd party intent signals. But you're measuring  the wrong things.

The real work happens in the "dark." Visibility and credibility built that can't easily be measured via clicks, form fills, or website visits.

Because the real decisions about which vendors to consider...that's happening in boardrooms long before the buying process starts.

Google and Bain did a study of over 1200 B2B technology and services buyers.

86% of buyers started their process with a shortlist already identified.

By the time your 3rd party intent data tells you someone is "in market," they've already decided who they're buying from.

And chances are, you're not on their shortlist.

This happens in the "dark":

→ Someone asks their network who to talk to
→ They read content from people they trust
→ They build consensus around 3-4 vendors

All before you ever see an intent signal on ZoomInfo or Clay.

I've watched this play out dozens of times:

Your sales team sees an intent signal on Clay and reaches out.

Your AE delivers the perfect demo. The prospect seems like a perfect fit.

Then they go silent.

Three months later, you find out they bought from a competitor you'd never even heard them mention.

The frustration is real. These are deals you should have won.

But here's what actually happened:

You were never really in the deal. You were the box-checking exercise. The third quote they needed to justify the decision they'd already made.

Because the winner was building trust and credibility six months before that intent signal ever fired.

Intent data tells you when someone is ready to buy. But it's lagging data.

Here's what works instead:

Show up earlier. Build visibility and credibility with them before they're "in market."

Use content and thought leadership to shape their understanding of their situation and the possibilities.

Build relationships before the buying process even starts.

Position your executives as the trusted voices in your space. Not your brand. Your people.

Because buyers don't trust faceless company brands anymore. They trust individuals who consistently demonstrate expertise and insight.

Create the kind of content that gets shared in Slack channels and leadership meetings.

Be part of the conversations that happen before the RFP drops.

Because if you're not on that shortlist from day one, your fancy intent signals won't save you.

Neither will your perfect pitch deck.

Back when I lived in Jersey City, a prospect in NYC asked for a meeting with me at 3pm on July 3rd. 

He seemed truly excited about our offering, so I agreed to head into NYC to meet with him. 

We booked a 1-hour meeting to discuss his marketing strategy.

I traveled 1.5 hours to get there, arrived 10 minutes early, and headed into his office. 

He came to the lobby about 15 minutes after our agreed to time. Told me he only had 10 minutes, because he wanted to meet his family and head out of town early. 

I was super pissed off. 

I told him it was a 3-hour round trip to meet with him. If he didn't respect my time more than this, then I didn't want his business. 

He shrugged.

I walked out. 

Bullet dodged.

LinkedIn is going to a lot of effort to push their new desktop app. I haven't tried it. Have you?

If it works like their iPad app, then run away! 

I've been working with support for 4 MONTHS now trying to get them to pay attention to the fact that the iPad app crashes constantly. Literally. It is crashing after every 3rd to 4th action - comment/dm. 

Super frustrating. (I update each time they release an update...and that's just made it worse)

Anyone else experiencing this issue with the iPad app?

Has you tried the desktop app? 

Personally, I don't see the point. The web app works fine. 

Unless this is their strategy to prevent any plugins. If it reduces spam...great. But I doubt that's their reason. 

Anyone know why they're going this direction?
